Can I still be saved? [Transmigration] - Chapter 3
That evening, Song Wenqian improved the dinner menu, making a dish of sweet and sour fish and stewing half a chicken.
The original host loved eating fish, so Song Wenqian and her husband barely touched the fish, leaving everything for Su Yunjing.
Seeing there was still plenty of fish left, Su Yunjing thought for a moment, then eventually rummaged through the cabinets and pulled out a lunchbox.
Fu Hanzhou’s current physique was very poor; he was noticeably smaller and thinner than other kids his age.
It was the result of prolonged malnutrition.
If possible, Su Yunjing wanted to feed him.
When Su Yunjing headed out, it was already 7 p.m.
The days were long and nights were short, so it was still bright outside. Many people were sitting in the shade of the trees to enjoy the cool air.
Su Yunjing greeted people along the way and walked to the orphanage across the street.
He had asked around and found that dinner at the orphanage started at 6:30, and by 7:00, the children would be done eating.
But Fu Hanzhou was at the bottom of the food chain. With less experience fighting for food than the children who’d grown up here, he always ended up with leftovers.
The meals at the orphanage weren’t great. They can only eat meat on Fridays and Sundays.
Since he was on a mission, Su Yunjing was naturally biased toward Fu Hanzhou, so he only brought food for him.
Feeling a bit guilty about the other kids, he bought some candy to hand out when passing by a store.
While handing out the candy, he asked about the rats, wanting to see if yesterday’s efforts had paid off.
Su Yunjing still had a few sausages in his pocket. If stray cats really did come to catch rats, he planned to toss out more today.
Several kids said they’d heard cats meowing in the night. As for the sounds the rats made, they were already used to it.
Su Yunjing felt a bit bitter at heart after hearing that, and gave out all the candy in his pocket.
Fu Hanzhou was still in the same place, drawing alone.
Looking at the solitary little guy, Su Yunjing walked over, slightly troubled.
Fu Hanzhou’s features were hidden under the mottled shadows. His light-colored lips were tightly pressed together in a cold line.
His collar was too big, exposing his collarbones and thin shoulders and back.
He was so thin that the sharp lines of his frame made one’s heart ache.
“I brought some food from home for you. There’s fish and potatoes,” Su Yunjing squatted in front of him and opened the lunchbox.
Song Wenqian had stewed chicken with potatoes. The chicken was eaten, only the potatoes were left.
The potatoes were soft and mushy, melting in the mouth, with a rich, thick broth, perfect for mixing with rice.
Fu Hanzhou hadn’t eaten enough dinner. Smelling the aroma, his throat involuntarily moved.
But he didn’t look up. He didn’t want to eat the food Su Yunjing brought, and he certainly didn’t want to be friends with him.
Seeing the little guy remain unmoved, Su Yunjing asked, “Aren’t you hungry?”
Fu Hanzhou’s expression was cold. Though young, his aura was strong as he replied, “None of your business!”
Su Yunjing was taken aback.
He could clearly see the disgust in Fu Hanzhou’s beautiful eyes.
Su Yunjing couldn’t help but touch his own baby-fat cheeks.
Honestly, when he looked in the mirror, he thought the original host look was quite cute, not the type to be so off-putting.
As Su Yunjing was digesting Fu Hanzhou’s dislike for him, a chubby red-faced boy came running over.
He was the oldest in the kindergarten group. After finishing his candy, he shamelessly ran over to ask if Su Yunjing had more.
When he saw the fish Su Yunjing had brought, his eyes lit up, fixated on the glossy sweet and sour fish.
Su Yunjing felt a bit awkward.
He had originally planned to secretly feed Fu Hanzhou, but now he’d been caught.
It was perfectly normal for kids to want good food, especially in such poor conditions.
Su Yunjing waved at the boy, wanting to give him a piece of fish.
But someone didn’t want to.
Apparently, Fu Hanzhou and this boy had some bad bl00d. Seeing that the other wanted to eat, Fu Hanzhou picked up the lunchbox and started eating.
Su Yunjing: !!!
If I’d known you’d react like this, I would’ve…
Seeing this, the red-faced boy lunged forward to grab it, but Su Yunjing swiftly intercepted him.
Biased as he was, Su Yunjing thought this chubby boy was a bit overweight, while Fu Hanzhou was malnourished.
Su Yunjing emptied out his pockets. “No more candy. How about this: I’ll bring you some rice crackers tomorrow.”
The boy left reluctantly, only after getting a firm promise.
Rejecting one of the country’s future flowers so heartlessly, Su Yunjing felt uneasy.
Even Song Wenqian and her husband couldn’t afford to feed over twenty mouths, let alone a ‘child’ like him.
Su Yunjing pressed his temples, suppressing the last trace of guilt.
He quickly adjusted his mood and turned around, just about to offer some warmth to Fu Hanzhou, only to see the beautiful child clutching his throat, coughing uncomfortably.
Su Yunjing immediately realized what was happening and exclaimed, “Wait!” He pinched Fu Hanzhou’s sharp chin and forced him to look up.
“Let me see, is the bone big?”
Fu Hanzhou didn’t like being touched and pushed Su Yunjing away. He lowered his head and coughed for a while before finally spitting out the bone.
His porcelain-white little face had turned red, yet his expression remained cold.
Once the other boy left, Fu Hanzhou set the lunchbox aside and didn’t touch it again.
Su Yunjing had brought some sour plum juice Song Wenqian made and kept it in the fridge for a while so it was cool and tangy and very refreshing.
He opened the lid of the thermos cup. “Drink some water, clear your throat.”
He handed the cup over, but Fu Hanzhou didn’t take it and clearly wasn’t grateful.
“This is sour plum juice. If you don’t drink it, I’ll give it to that boy just now.”
Fu Hanzhou didn’t want to pay Su Yunjing any mind, but seeing that he really might do it, he frowned and snatched the cup, tilting his head back and drinking.
Su Yunjing only let him take two sips before reaching over to take it back. “Don’t drink too much. First, finish your food.”
His voice was clear and bright, tinged with amusement.
After all, he is still a kid.
A vengeful kid, but still susceptible to reverse psychology.
In the novel, Fu Hanzhou was extremely vengeful, the type to return a slap tenfold.
It was this kind of person, tormented by emotion, who created such stark contrast and made readers ache for him.
Su Yunjing felt sorry for him, not because the one he loved didn’t love him back, but simply because his backstory was so tragic.
Looking at Fu Hanzhou’s soft black hair falling gently over his face, Su Yunjing couldn’t help but reach out and touch it.
But before he could ruffle it more than twice, the little mad dog bared his claws and swatted him away.
But at least he picked up the lunchbox again.
Afraid he’d choke on another fish bone, Su Yunjing carefully picked out all the bones for him.
“There, no more bones. Go ahead and eat.” Su Yunjing handed the chopsticks back.
Fu Hanzhou pursed his lips and silently took them.
His hands were small and regular chopsticks were too long for a child.
Watching Fu Hanzhou awkwardly trying to pick up fish and potatoes with the chopsticks, Su Yunjing instantly realized he’d made a mistake.
He should’ve brought a spoon for Fu Hanzhou.
While Fu Hanzhou ate, Su Yunjing broke up three sausages and tossed them near Fu Hanzhou’s dorm room.
With his stomach finally full, Fu Hanzhou’s belly rounded out slightly. Su Yunjing happily carried the empty container back.
Today, he had finally taken the first step.
Feeding mission: success.
