A Cannon Fodder Who Became The Future Queen - Chapter 6.2
Ji Ping’an had no idea her roasted rabbit had made an entire village jealous and even made some children cry. The fat rabbit, though, was only one, and the three adults and two children ate it all, even sucking the bones clean of any meat.
After they were finished, Yun Niang and Manman prepared to go home. Before she left, Yun Niang asked Ji Ping’an, “Do you have any other food at home besides the wild rabbit?” She and her daughter had just eaten a wonderful meal just by lending out a knife. Even if the person was a troublemaker, Yun Niang felt like she was the one who got the better deal.
“What’s wrong? Are you looking down on me, just like those people in the county, thinking I can’t even get food for myself?” Ji Ping’an intentionally twisted her words, even making a motion to shoo them away.
Yun Niang quickly waved her hands, a hint of urgency in her voice. “That’s not what I meant. My family had a few pieces of coarse bread left over from yesterday. I was wondering if you and Ah Jiu would like to have them. I could bring them over.”
“Keep your coarse bread for yourself. I might need to borrow your knife again later. We’ll see!” Ji Ping’an’s face showed a flicker of impatience. “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to close the gate!”
Yun Niang opened her mouth, seeming to have something more to say, but she swallowed her words and just shook her head. “There’s nothing else.”
As soon as she said that, Ji Ping’an latched the fence and went back into the courtyard.
“Mom?” Manman looked up at her.
Yun Niang took her daughter’s small hand and, after glancing at Ji Ping’an’s back, said softly, “Let’s go home.”
It’s still the same old Ji Ping’an, she thought. You say a few words to her, and she thinks you’re looking down on her. But even so, this was much better than her hitting people. There were other wretched Alphas in the village, but some of them would change their ways after getting married. If Ji Ping’an could just treat Ah Jiu well, maybe the two of them could make a life together.
After seeing them off, Ji Ping’an turned to the little lump on the ground. “Suisui, you and Ah Jiu take the leftover ashes to the kitchen.”
The ashes from burned wood were a great resource. They could be used as fertilizer for crops, to make lye, or even to keep grain from getting damp or infested with bugs.
“Okay, big sister.”
Though Shen Zhiyu disliked the Alpha, she wouldn’t just watch a child work by herself. She helped carry the ashes in a shallow basket.
Ji Ping’an took her basket to her room. She first took out the wild vegetables and then the medicine. The doctor at the pharmacy had given her plenty of medicine. Besides the ones she requested, there were also a lot of remedies for headaches and fevers that she could use later. At the pharmacy, Ji Ping’an also saw the characters of this dynasty; they were even more complex than traditional Chinese characters. In her previous life, her college major was computer science, and she was completely clueless when it came to literature. Since it was a hassle to read them, Ji Ping’an simply told the doctor she was illiterate and asked him to wrap the different medicines in different shapes so she could tell them apart later. The one for bruises was easy to recognize; it was a paste in a small clay jar.
She took the small jar out of her room and saw Suisui walking toward her.
“Big sister, Ah Jiu and I moved all the ashes in the yard.”
Maybe because of what had happened before, Suisui was still standing a step away from her, but the fear in her eyes was a little less. Ji Ping’an was content with that. She thought about buying the child some candy soon. “I saw it. You’re so amazing, Suisui.”
Suisui was rarely praised. She blinked when she heard it, then looked up and whispered, “Ah Jiu is amazing, too.”
Hearing this, Ji Ping’an looked at the woman in the yard and raised an eyebrow slightly. “Yes, Ah Jiu is amazing, too.”
Shen Zhiyu gave her a cold look and turned to go back inside. She hadn’t expected that as soon as she entered the room, Ji Ping’an would come in with Suisui. She sat on the edge of the bed and narrowed her eyes. “What are you doing here?”
“I got some medicine from the county to treat your injuries,” Ji Ping’an said, holding up the clay jar. “I told you I would be good to you from now on.”
After explaining, she first applied the medicine to Suisui. The original host had used a wooden stick to hit her, and the wounds were now an ugly purplish-blue. “Tell big sister if it hurts,” she said.
Suisui shook her head. “It doesn’t hurt.” The milky-white ointment not only didn’t hurt but also had a cool, soothing feel. I hope big sister stays this way, she thought. This is even better than when Mom was here.
After applying the medicine to Suisui, Ji Ping’an looked up at Shen Zhiyu, who was sitting on the edge of the bed. Suisui understood that they were treating a wound, so she thoughtfully went to the kitchen to boil some water.
Before Ji Ping’an could speak, Shen Zhiyu said, “I can put on the medicine myself.” The medicine was a good thing for her now, and she wouldn’t refuse it, but there was no way she would let the Alpha touch her.
Ji Ping’an said, “You can put the medicine on your arm yourself, but I need to help you with the injuries on your leg.”
Shen Zhiyu looked at her. “Didn’t you say you’d grant me any request, except leaving? I want to put the medicine on myself. Can you grant that?”
Ji Ping’an: “…”
When you get slapped in the face enough times, you stop feeling embarrassed.
“Besides putting on the medicine and leaving, I can grant any of your other requests.” When Shen Zhiyu had moved the ashes, Ji Ping’an had noticed that she walked with a slight limp. She hadn’t forgotten that in the original plot, the original host had crippled Shen Zhiyu. So she had to use the excuse of applying medicine to check if her legs were seriously injured.
Shen Zhiyu’s voice was frigid. “You know how to check?” She just thought the lecherous Alpha was trying to find an excuse to satisfy her desires.
Ji Ping’an said, “I had the doctor at the pharmacy teach me today. I can tell by feeling the bones.” If the bone was injured, the knee would be swollen or have a bump, which was easy to spot. She said this to explain that she had no other motives. But to Shen Zhiyu, it sounded like the Alpha not only wanted to look at her leg but also touch it. She had lost her memory, not her mind. What Omega would let anyone but their own husband touch their leg?
Shen Zhiyu wouldn’t back down. “Tell me where to touch, and I’ll do it myself.”
Seeing this, Ji Ping’an had no choice but to hand the ointment to her. She stretched out her own leg, accidentally touching the Omega’s foot, and immediately pulled it back. “Okay, I’ll touch a spot, and you’ll do the same.”
Shen Zhiyu lowered her eyes and followed her lead, touching her knee.
“Does it hurt here? Is there a bone sticking out?” Ji Ping’an was touching the bone on the left side of her knee, but her eyes never left Shen Zhiyu’s leg. Shen Zhiyu felt a strange sensation, as if the Alpha was touching her, but she couldn’t say anything because she had been the one to propose this method. She suppressed her frustration and said, “It doesn’t hurt. No.”
“It really doesn’t hurt?”
When she asked, she was met with a pair of cold eyes.
Alright, I guess it really doesn’t hurt.
Ji Ping’an guided the Omega to check a few more spots. In the process, she caught an unintentional glimpse of a pale ankle. When she was found, Shen Zhiyu’s outer clothes were tattered and made of common fabric. Ji Ping’an guessed Shen Zhiyu had disguised herself to secretly leave the palace. The original host never gave her any new clothes, so she had to keep wearing the old ones. There was a hole in the leg of her pants that wasn’t noticeable when she was standing, but when she sat down and bent her leg, the fabric pulled up, revealing her white ankle. It seems I need to take Suisui and Shen Zhiyu to the county to buy some clothes when I have a chance, she thought. They’ll need them when it gets warmer.
Thinking this, Ji Ping’an couldn’t help but look twice, wondering what fabric and color she should get. But as soon as she glanced at it, Shen Zhiyu immediately straightened up and pulled her clothes down to cover her ankle. She not only wants to dig out the Alpha’s scent glands, but she also wants to dig out her eyes!
“Does it look nice?”
Ji Ping’an wanted to say yes. After all, Shen Zhiyu was once a pampered princess. Her skin was as white as jade, and even the scars couldn’t hide her beauty. But when the words reached her lips, she felt they were too frivolous. There was no need to say them when there were no outsiders present. So she said, “It doesn’t look nice.”
Shen Zhiyu gave a cold snort. “Hmph.”
Ji Ping’an: “…”
