- Episode 10 - To Protect Judith
The next time I woke up was.
It was because I heard Judith and Mr. Sanders’ voices.
“No! Today, I’m staying close to Sirius!”
“That is not possible. It’s already time. You know best that you need to go home, don’t you, Miss?”
The voice of Judith throwing a tantrum and Mr. Sanders, who is at his wit’s end.
Sirius slowly opened his eyes.
Finally.
Finally, my vision has properly returned.
The interior is a mix of orange and gray.
It seems like night is approaching.
It was that time.
Normally, Judith would have been home by now.
That’s why Mr. Sanders, who is usually taciturn, is using all his words to persuade.
“Judith?”
I placed my hands on the bed and slowly lifted my upper body.
The dizziness had improved, but now I have a severe headache.
When I placed my hand on my forehead and involuntarily groaned, Judith hurriedly rushed over.
“Sirius! Does your head hurt? Are you okay?”
Kneeling by the bed, they peek up at me from below.
Those eyes are bright red, and so are the areas around them and the tip of the nose. They might have been crying non-stop.
“Stop it, it’s like you’re trying to kill me.”
He forced a joking laugh and sat cross-legged as slowly as possible.
As long as I don’t move suddenly, the headache doesn’t seem to be a problem. Rather, now I feel like I need to go to the bathroom. Even though I’ve thrown up everything in my stomach, I wonder how many hours it’s been since I last went to the bathroom.
“I’m going to the bathroom. You should head home by then.”
Slowly, slowly, I tell myself and lower my feet from the bed.
“Today, I’m worried about Sirius, so I’m staying here!”
“What are you talking about?”
Sirius looked at Judith with utter disbelief.
“This tower was originally a prison, you know? Why would the daughter of a duke stay in such a place? It’s strange, isn’t it? By the way, move aside. I’m going to the bathroom.”
“That’s right, miss. Young Master Sirius is correct. Oh, Young Master Sirius, please drink this before you go to the bathroom.”
With a grunt, I stood up and carefully checked for any dizziness, when Mr. Sanders promptly offered me a goblet.
Inside is a clear liquid. It’s filled quite generously.
“It seems that Sirius-sama fell asleep during the treatment… The monk has instructed us to give him his medicine regularly once he wakes up.”
From her consistently calm tone, I can’t discern what she is thinking or feeling right now.
“Is it some kind of medicinal bath?”
Judith says. Mr. Sanders didn’t say it explicitly, but Sirius realized that the contents were what the elderly monk referred to as “hot water mixed with a pinch of salt and sugar.”
“Here you go.”
Prompted by Mr. Sanders, I downed it in one go.
I wasn’t aware of it, but my throat must have been dry. The hot water moistened my body from the inside with astonishing force, and even though it wasn’t particularly tasty, I ended up asking for a second helping.
I declined Judith’s offer to “lend a hand” as it was, and moved to the restroom on the first floor.
Has the caretaker lady already gone home? There’s no sign of anyone.
When I used the toilet, I felt more refreshed than I expected.
Even so, panting as I climbed the stairs, I was taken aback to find Judith lounging on my bed when I entered my room.
“What are you doing? Go home.”
“That’s why! Because I’m worried about Sirius!”
“It’s okay. You’ve already gotten a lot better.”
“Because those monks never told us why Sirius ended up like this! It might flare up again in the middle of the night!”
Well, Sirius thinks to himself, there’s no way we can say we mixed the poison.
“Don’t just say it’s common for teenagers going through growth spurts! We have three older brothers and one younger brother, but none of them ever did anything like this! They used to get nosebleeds all the time, though!”
Judith said indignantly. Sirius let out a small puff of laughter.
“I think it will be fine, my lady.”
Only Mr. Sanders calmly says.
“It seems that there is no more dizziness or color vision abnormalities. This means that the toxins that entered the body have been somewhat broken down or expelled.”
“Poison?!”
Judith, who was too surprised, jumped up from the bed.
“How about an antidote or something?!”
“Whether it’s artificial toxins or natural toxins, the basic principle is excretion. During this process, minerals and water are rapidly lost, so it’s likely that they are replenished with warm water mixed with salt or sugar.”
Glancing at the empty goblet, Mr. Sanders continued.
“From what I can see, it doesn’t seem to be an infectious disease, and even if it were food poisoning, I’m concerned that the caretaker hasn’t shown any symptoms yet. What worries me the most is not just the vomiting, but the peculiar symptoms related to the light and color exhibited by Sirius. This suggests a high possibility of some kind of poison being ingested. If that’s the case, then it must be something that the caretaker didn’t eat, but only Sirius did. That would be bread.”
“The bakery I recently changed to! Let’s catch them!”
Judith, who suddenly tries to rush out with enthusiasm, is hurriedly stopped by Sirius, who was near the door.
“There’s no evidence, you know? What if it’s a false accusation?”
Sirius knows best that it wasn’t a wrongful conviction, but there’s no other way to say it.
“As Sirius said, let’s not make any purchases starting tomorrow, and then we can investigate discreetly.”
Judith reacts to the words “in secret.” Sirius sighs as she repeats, “I see, in secret.” Is the “mysterious beautiful girl & beautiful woman” planning to act in the shadows again?
“If that’s the case, we can’t stay here forever, miss.”
“That’s right, Mr. Sanders! We need to head out for the investigation right away!”
As expected of Mr. Sanders. You’re good at handling Judith.
As Sirius was trying to hold back his laughter, Judith, who had been stubbornly insisting on not going home, suddenly started hurriedly preparing to leave as if it were a lie.
“Alright, Sirius, drink all the hot water in that pitcher over there!”
“I know.”
“If you ever feel lonely, talk to Ijet-kun! I think he might be worried about you too.”
“I don’t want to, it’s scary.”
“I’ll come again tomorrow, but do you need anything?”
With a small bag that seemed almost like an ornament hanging from her elbow, Judith looked up at Sirius.
“Hmm…”
I’m going to sleep again now, and when I wake up tomorrow, I’m sure I’ll feel even better. I have a feeling about it.
There are countless things that make me uneasy, and I think I have to somehow prevent my brother-in-law’s ridiculous scheme.
And when I think about the things that couldn’t be prevented, it makes me so terrified that I feel like screaming.
So.
“What? Say anything?”
“Well then. Can I give you a hug?”
Getting Judith involved and causing trouble for the Marquis of the Imperial Court.
Only the worst-case scenarios keep popping into my head.
It might go well.
I might be able to stop that brother-in-law.
I want to strengthen that kind of thinking.
And.
I just want to feel at ease today, at least.
Sirius loosely spread both hands towards her.
“Of course, it’s fine. So, you were worried about Sirius because you weren’t feeling well after all. See, Mr. Sanders? It was the right decision to come home late, wasn’t it?”
Judith, speaking to Mr. Sanders who was standing confidently by the wall, tilted her chin slightly in a sisterly manner.
“Sirius is older than me, but he’s still such a child.”
Saying that, they jumped into my arms.
Wrap both hands around Sirius’s back and press my right ear to his chest as if to listen to the sound of his heartbeat.
“Don’t worry, Sirius. I’ll definitely come tomorrow too. Oh, right! I’ll make something for you and bring it tomorrow!”
“Sirius, dear boy, is scheduled to fast today and tomorrow.”
I’m glad Mr. Sanders intervened.
My throat is unbearably dry, but I have no appetite at all.
“Got it. Then, the day after tomorrow. As for tomorrow… well, I’ll bring my recommended book!”
“I’m looking forward to it.”
Sirius gently wrapped Judith in his arms and kissed her glossy hair. “Hehe,” Judith laughed, and as if to return the favor, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed Sirius’s cheek.
“Well then, see you tomorrow, Sirius. Sleep well.”
“Yeah,” Sirius nodded and released his arms.
I have to do something about that brother-in-law.
To protect Judith.
