A Paper Contract GL - Chapter 2
As for receiving compliments, Jiang Yuetong was also very pleased, her face slightly flushed. She didn’t know if girls who had reached the age when they should be dating would all be so shy. Jiang Yuetong hadn’t dated much in the past, having been focused on her studies.
Chen Nan finished with the major client, and it was already almost evening. Although her grandfather’s words were very important, Chen Nan seemed to have completely forgotten about them. Her phone was practically blown up while she was working, but she simply didn’t have time to answer, and all those calls turned into missed calls. Chen Nan pays great attention to her life, but even more attention to her work. During work hours, Chen Nan will not answer private calls, with the exception of her parents and grandfather.
After work, Chen Nan took out her phone to return calls, many of which were from her women. Chen Nan was not one to be loyal to a single person. She was too outstanding in all aspects, so there were always many beautiful women surrounding her. Chen Nan had publicly come out a long time ago, which made her even more unrestrained in her socializing.
She was just about to agree to a date with one of them when she ran right into Zhang Manyang at the office door. Zhang Manyang said, “General Manager Chen, you made me wait for you for four full hours. What, are you not planning to see me even after work?”
Chen Nan was slightly stunned. “Oh… I almost forgot. Come in.” Chen Nan turned and went back into the office.
Zhang Manyang sat down opposite Chen Nan’s desk and said, “Long story short, here you go.”
Chen Nan took the folder Zhang Manyang handed her. “This is what Grandpa wanted you to give me?”
Zhang Manyang simply said, “Grandpa modified his will. Your name is listed first on the will.”
Chen Nan gave an insincere, strained smile. “So what? Isn’t that how it should be? I’m his only granddaughter, and one so talented in the business world. Who else would he give it to? Donate it to the country? I haven’t seen him show that kind of high awareness.”
Zhang Manyang said, “You better take a look first. Maybe getting the company won’t be that easy. Your grandfather has conditions.”
“What are conditions for?” Chen Nan shrugged slightly. “So what if there are conditions?” The reason Chen Nan sounded so casual was that her grandfather had always pampered her, and she didn’t believe her grandfather would set any obstacles for her in inheriting the estate.
Zhang Manyang smiled and said, “Don’t be so optimistic yet. Things might not be what you think.”
While Zhang Manyang was speaking, Chen Nan opened the folder.
“Look,” Zhang Manyang pointed to the first clause, “Your grandfather, the Chairman, states in the will that you are the primary heir, but on the condition that you must marry a woman…”
Chen Nan, who was drinking coffee, immediately spat all the coffee onto Zhang Manyang’s face. Zhang Manyang instantly stood up. “What are you doing? Is that a sudden attack… I’m dizzy…”
“Dizzy? I’m the one who should be dizzy right now! Is Grandpa insane? What is he making me do?” Chen Nan immediately reviewed her grandfather’s will carefully. That’s right, it was exactly as Zhang Manyang said. Fine, she wouldn’t accept this. What was Grandpa trying to pull? “I don’t have time to talk to you. I’m going to ask him face-to-face what he’s planning!”
“Hey! I’m not finished talking yet! Hey…” Zhang Manyang shouted from behind, but she couldn’t stop Chen Nan. Actually, Zhang Manyang had already anticipated that Chen Nan would react this way if she told her. She figured it was better to just let her go, as Zhang Manyang herself didn’t understand what the Chairman was thinking either.
Jiang Yuetong arrived at the date restaurant full of hope, wondering what kind of person her mother had set her up with this time. As Jiang Yuetong was daydreaming, she unexpectedly ran into someone who knocked her right over.
“Is an old ox plowing the field? Why so much force? I almost got killed.” Jiang Yuetong unhappily looked up at the person. Huh, so clean-cut and good-looking. Is it a man? Or a woman? This person was dressed very neutrally, making it hard to tell.
“If you were killed, how come you’re not dead yet!” The person who did the crashing was none other than Chen Nan. She was rushing to find her grandfather, and the more she thought about the will just now, the angrier she got. How could Grandpa just decide her lifelong marriage for her? That’s why she was so reckless that she knocked someone over, and such a delicate person, too, one who would fall right to the ground.
“What? Are you trying to blackmail me? What’s the big deal about being hit by a body? Do you need to go to the hospital?” Chen Nan spoke rudely, charging forward as if she had swallowed gunpowder.
Jiang Yuetong got up, brushed the dust off her clothes. “Is there something wrong with you? You bumped into me, shouldn’t you at least say sorry? Truly ill-mannered. I can’t be bothered with you.” Jiang Yuetong gave her a massive eye-roll, then walked away without looking back. For Jiang Yuetong, she had no spare time to waste on this lunatic.
Chen Nan watched Jiang Yuetong leave, then headed toward the parking lot. She was currently the Vice General Manager of Tianqi Company, overseeing a portion of the restaurants and hotels. She had set up her office on the fifth floor of this very restaurant, which is why she accidentally bumped into Jiang Yuetong while going downstairs. If Chen Nan knew that the woman her grandfather wanted her to marry was Jiang Yuetong, what would her reaction be?
Jiang Yuetong nodded in acknowledgment to the man sitting opposite her. The restaurant’s service was very efficient; the food was served soon after they ordered. Jiang Yuetong and the man introduced themselves to each other. She learned the man’s name was Wang Shangfeng, and he was 35 years old. Upon hearing this age, Jiang Yuetong immediately lost much of her interest. Who says age isn’t a generation gap? She was only 26!
“Miss Jiang, please help yourself.” Wang Shangfeng lowered his head and picked up his cutlery, seemingly not daring to look at Jiang Yuetong much. Jiang Yuetong, however, could observe him thoroughly. Although he was 35, there were no signs of balding—8 points! She knew some male colleagues of hers who were almost bald before they hit 30. Truly terrifying.
But after that, the scores Jiang Yuetong gave the man kept dropping. Because this man not only burped while eating but also asked the waiter if the meal they ordered was expensive. Finally, Wang Shangfeng went to the front desk to question the service staff, saying that he clearly only ordered two dishes, yet they were charged two hundred yuan, asking if the bill was calculated incorrectly.
By the end of the date, Jiang Yuetong felt her face was burning hot and no longer wanted any contact with this man named Wang Shangfeng.
On her way home, Jiang Yuetong thought to herself that she was truly unlucky: she was bumped into without reason, and her blind date failed yet again.
If she could use a plane, Chen Nan would have flown over. When she arrived at her grandfather’s house, her grandfather was having dinner. Seeing Chen Nan appear, he showed no surprise, as if he had already anticipated that Chen Nan would come to see him. This man, once a business tycoon, now just an old man enjoying his later years, was named Chen Yannian. With assets exceeding ten billion, the ground in Guangzhou would shake if he simply stomped his foot. He started his fortune early and was one of the most senior billionaires in Guangzhou.
“Grandpa, what is going on?” Chen Nan stared, seemingly about to erupt in anger.
“What is going on? Have you studied for so many years that you can’t even understand the words written there? My lawyer wrote it clearly enough, didn’t he?” Although Chen Yannian deeply loved Chen Nan, he was also very strict in disciplining her.
“I know! Of course, I understand, but how can you ask me to marry… how can you ask me to marry a woman?” Chen Nan had difficulty speaking the words. Had her grandfather become senile?
“Yes, I’m asking you to marry a woman. What’s wrong with that?” Grandpa continued to drink his porridge, not taking Chen Nan’s words to heart and seemingly ignoring her anger.
“Grandpa! Are you sick? You’re still asking me what’s wrong? Don’t you remember I’m a woman? How can I marry her?” Chen Nan shouted, feeling like she was going crazy.
Chen Yannian finally put down his bowl and chopsticks and looked at Chen Nan seriously, the last hint of a smile gradually disappearing from his face. Whenever he showed this expression, it meant he was about to talk about something serious.
“Nannan, you came out a long time ago. Did you think I didn’t know? Of course, you publicly came out to your parents, but I’m also your grandfather, your relative. Should I be unaware? Look at your clothing and mannerisms, there’s nothing girlish about you, you’re a complete boy. Never mind. The Chen family has billions in assets, and not having a male heir is a regret, so I won’t say more about you. I’ll just treat you as a boy.” Chen Yannian sighed and continued, “I won’t comment on your work ability; I am indeed very satisfied. But did you think I don’t know about your private life?” Chen Yannian shot her a look. Chen Nan lowered her head guiltily and said embarrassedly, “What about me? My private life is quite healthy and youthful…”
“Putting everything else aside, I know you’ve had many different girlfriends, correct?” Chen Yannian continued, “I consulted a psychologist. They said you won’t change. Rather than letting you live a muddled life associating with various disreputable friends, it’s better for me to appoint a good girl and entrust your life to her. That way, I’ll be at ease, and I’ll be at ease about the family fortune.” Chen Yannian smiled faintly.
Chen Nan said, “Grandpa, have you ever met this Jiang Yuetong person? Do you know what she looks like, do you understand her character, that you would just let me be with her? Yes, I am LES, and I’ve always admitted it, but you can’t just randomly pair people up like this! This is a new society, arranged marriages have long disappeared. Why are they suddenly making a comeback for me?”
Chen Yannian took a sip of the fruit water on the table and said, “Of course, I know her. I think she’s excellent in every aspect. She’s the one.”
Chen Nan said, “I disagree. I cannot accept a stranger.”
“Won’t you go and date her? After dating, she won’t be a stranger, will she?” Chen Yannian’s voice suddenly hardened. He said, “I don’t care what you think. In short, you can only inherit all of the Chen family’s assets if you marry her.” Chen Yannian changed his tone. “Besides your father, I have a bastard son outside, you know about this, right? And he had a boy, around your age. If you don’t agree, maybe I’ll be disappointed in you and give all the family assets to him instead.”
“You!” Chen Nan looked at her cunning grandfather and could only swallow all her words. The Chen family was still under Chen Yannian’s control, and he wasn’t just trying to scare her.
