A Paper Contract GL - Chapter 3
Chen Nan forced Zhang Manyang to go find Jiang Yuetong, and the two drove along the road.
“Chen Nan, is it a little inappropriate for you to just go see her like this? You should at least have some…” Zhang Manyang struggled to find the right words. “Wouldn’t it be better to have a bit of a buffer?”
Chen Nan frowned and asked, “How else should I go about it? I have to go see what she looks like first, right? If she looks as ugly as a ghost, I’d rather give up the entire family fortune than be with her.” Chen Nan curled her lip, imagining the disgusting scene of sleeping next to someone hideously ugly.
“Yes, I’m actually very curious about what she looks like, that the Chairman would be so fond of her and insist that you be with her. It’s true the Chairman has long known you came out as lesbian, but his attitude has been neither against nor for it. Now, suddenly having you marry a woman—this behavior is quite bizarre. The Chairman is the Chairman; his way of doing things is just different from everyone else.”
“Enough with that, Zhang Manyang. I brought you into the company, not the Chairman. You don’t need to stand so far away and kiss up to him; he can’t hear you.” Chen Nan rolled her eyes at Zhang Manyang and said, “Let’s go see what that vixen looks like, the one who’s charmed my grandfather so completely. I find it strange—if my grandfather likes her, he could just bring her home, since my grandmother is no longer around. Why must he force me to marry her!”
Chen Nan only dared to say this when her grandfather wasn’t present. If she were in front of him, no matter how reckless she was, she wouldn’t dare utter these words. That’s because her grandfather and her deceased grandmother had a remarkably good relationship. Even though her grandmother passed away over ten years ago, and her grandfather is immensely wealthy, he has never had an affair with any woman, which is a point of admiration.
Zhang Manyang smiled and said, “Actually, Chen Nan, don’t take it too hard. Maybe that woman is even prettier than Fan Bingbing. I trust the Chairman’s eye. Maybe she’s the next Yang Guifei.”
Chen Nan scoffed lightly, saying, “Don’t make me laugh, ‘Yang Guifei.’ Don’t forget that that woman nearly caused the downfall of a dynasty. Anyway, no matter what, I have no good impression of this woman named Jiang Yuetong.”
The car quickly arrived at the high school where Jiang Yuetong worked. Chen Nan and Zhang Manyang walked to the entrance. They managed to find out which office Jiang Yuetong was in. Before they even entered the door, they heard voices inside. Standing at the doorway, they listened; it sounded like a teacher lecturing a student. The teacher’s voice was somewhat stern but very pleasant to the ear.
“Excuse me, which one is Teacher Jiang Yuetong?” Zhang Manyang asked. Chen Nan followed him in, wearing a look of displeasure.
Jiang Yuetong turned her head. “I am.” She walked over. “May I help you?”
The moment Jiang Yuetong turned back, Chen Nan looked at her carefully, and a very small trace of unexpected delight involuntarily crossed her heart. She saw Jiang Yuetong wearing a simple apricot-colored chiffon T-shirt. It had no special design, yet it was unique and elegant, paired with an equally simple little black skirt, giving her a sweet and intellectual vibe. Just for a moment, this sight seemed to stir Chen Nan’s memories of her school days. However, despite the positive first impression, the thought of her grandfather’s forced marriage made Chen Nan’s mood plummet again. Chen Nan firmly believed that her grandfather must have been charmed by this woman named Jiang Yuetong. Jiang Yuetong must be after her family’s money, hoping to climb the social ladder and become a phoenix. A cunning woman like this certainly couldn’t be good. Jiang Yuetong was only deceiving her grandfather because he was old!
Zhang Manyang smiled at Jiang Yuetong, then glanced at Chen Nan and said, “We have something we’d like to talk to you about. Can we sit down and discuss it? It won’t take up much of your time.” With that, Zhang Manyang handed over his business card.
Jiang Yuetong nodded and looked at Chen Nan again. She felt like she had seen her somewhere but couldn’t quite remember where.
Zhang Manyang asked, “May I ask, Miss Jiang, do you know Chen Yannian?”
Jiang Yuetong blinked her dark eyes and shook her head. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I do. There is no student named Chen Yannian in my class. I don’t know about other classes.”
Chen Nan remained silent, looking at Jiang Yuetong’s beautiful face, thinking, This woman is such a good actress!
Zhang Manyang asked, “Then, have you heard of Tianqi Group?”
Jiang Yuetong nodded. “Of course, I’ve heard of it. There are probably very few people in Guangzhou who haven’t heard of Tianqi Group. The Tianqi Mall is near my home, and I often go there to shop. I heard that’s just one of the Tianqi Group’s businesses.”
Zhang Manyang nodded. “That’s right. The Chen Yannian I just mentioned is the Chairman of Tianqi Group. It’s fair to say that he built Tianqi Group from the ground up.”
“Oh.” Jiang Yuetong nodded. She really couldn’t figure out what the two people opposite her wanted to say. “So… what does this have to do with me? You didn’t come to see me just to talk about this, did you?”
Zhang Manyang said cordially, “We came to see you today because…”
Before he could finish, his words were interrupted by Chen Nan. “We came to see you today to check if you’re fit to be a teacher. I think you’d be much better suited as a swindler! You’re such a good actress.” Chen Nan refused to believe Jiang Yuetong didn’t know her grandfather. How could she not know him?
Jiang Yuetong was stunned. Obviously, she hadn’t expected Chen Nan to be so rude. She hadn’t offended them, had she?
Chen Nan said, “We just want to see what kind of witchcraft you used to confuse my grandfather and make him do such an irrational thing…”
Before Chen Nan could finish, Zhang Manyang nudged her. “What are you doing? Why are you so agitated!”
Jiang Yuetong stood up and said unhappily, “If you don’t intend to speak properly, please leave. I have a class to teach. I’m sorry.”
Zhang Manyang immediately said, “I apologize, Miss Jiang Yuetong, please wait a moment and let us finish.”
Seemingly out of consideration for Zhang Manyang, Jiang Yuetong sat down again. “Fine, whatever you have to say, please be quick. But I have zero interest in what you are about to say.”
Zhang Manyang said, “I apologize, let me give you the summary first. We can explain the detailed legal issues to you later. The situation is this: The Chairman of Tianqi Group, Chen Yannian, has left his inheritance to you, Miss Jiang Yuetong.”
“What?!” Jiang Yuetong’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Chen Nan scoffed in contempt, “Hmph. Stealing such a large sum of money from our family and now pretending not to know anything. I despise women like this the most. Just looking at you makes me sick.”
Jiang Yuetong was truly at her limit. “I think you must have the wrong person. Although my name is Jiang Yuetong, I might not be the person you’re looking for. There are many people named Jiang Yuetong in Guangzhou. Please go look for someone else.”
Zhang Manyang said, “There’s no mistake. It is you.” He continued, “The Chairman has granted you significant rights in the will, and I think you absolutely need to know about them.”
Chen Nan crossed her arms over her chest and sat with her legs crossed. “Jiang Yuetong, do you know how much one share of Tianqi stock is worth? You really hit the jackpot! You’ve made a huge profit!”
Jiang Yuetong’s mind was in utter chaos. If the sun wasn’t so bright, she would think she was dreaming.
“Would you please shut up?” Jiang Yuetong said coldly to Chen Nan. “I don’t even know what you people are talking about right now. I think there might be some misunderstanding, or you’ve found the wrong person.”
Before Zhang Manyang could speak, Chen Nan interjected again. “I truly can’t stand the look on your face. Misunderstanding? This is clearly premeditated! Alright, now that your wish is about to be fulfilled, you should be happy, yet you’re still pretending you don’t know my grandfather. How could you not know him? No matter how old he is, he wouldn’t be so senile as to casually give his family fortune to a complete stranger.”
Jiang Yuetong glared at Chen Nan and shouted, “Are you deaf? I said I don’t know your grandfather! How many times do I have to say it before you believe me?”
“I really despise women like you the most!” Chen Nan said without restraint.
Jiang Yuetong didn’t back down, lifting her chin to retort, “And I dislike people like you the most!” Jiang Yuetong took a deep breath and said, “Fine, I’ll say it again. I have absolutely no connection to your Tianqi Group, and I don’t know any Chairman named Chen Yannian. Do you understand now?”
Chen Nan bit her lip and said, “That’s ridiculous! Didn’t you just say you knew our Chairman, and now you don’t? Which of your statements is actually true?”
Zhang Manyang also nodded. “Yes, Miss Jiang, didn’t you just say you knew our Chairman?”
Jiang Yuetong was at her wit’s end with them. “I said I know of him, just like I know who the President of the United States is. They are public figures, of course I know them, but they may not necessarily know me!” If she continued talking to these two people, Jiang Yuetong felt she would break down.
Zhang Manyang said, “Alright, everything has been made quite clear now. However, to become the inheritor of the assets, you need to meet a few conditions, which means agreeing to a few terms…”
“Conditions? Tell me what they are.” Jiang Yuetong looked at Zhang Manyang.
“Well…” Zhang Manyang cleared his throat twice. “Well… the condition is…”
“Why are you stuttering? You were speaking quite fluently just now. Could it be that this condition…” Jiang Yuetong seemed to sense something, feeling a mix of hope and apprehension.
“Fine, I’ll say it,” Zhang Manyang said. “You can inherit the estate by getting married.”
“What?!” Jiang Yuetong’s eyes widened. She had been shocked too many times today.
Zhang Manyang added, “Yes, you didn’t hear wrong. I said you can inherit the estate by getting married. It’s also written that way in the will. Take a look.” Zhang Manyang said, “The will states that you can receive the inheritance by marrying the designated person. However, there are more detailed instructions, which I will explain to you later.”
“Marry whom?” Jiang Yuetong asked. Although marriage was her most pressing issue right now, she couldn’t just marry anyone. What if it was a lunatic or an idiot? She wouldn’t sell herself out for money.
“Chen Nan…” Zhang Manyang said.
“Chen Nan? Who is Chen Nan?” Jiang Yuetong countered.
Zhang Manyang didn’t speak, merely glancing at Chen Nan out of the corner of his eye. Jiang Yuetong then realized that the elegantly handsome person sitting opposite her who had been repeatedly rude was Chen Nan.
“Him? He is Chen Nan? You want me to marry him?” Jiang Yuetong shook her head. “That’s terrifying!”
“Who says otherwise? As if anyone would want to marry you,” Chen Nan looked at Jiang Yuetong contemptuously.
Jiang Yuetong curled her lip. “Marrying him? No way. Even if every man in the world died, I wouldn’t marry him! I truly don’t know how Chairman Chen Yannian could have such a grandson who can’t even speak properly.”
Zhang Manyang lowered his head, then raised it again, coughing twice before speaking. He said with some difficulty, “I apologize, Miss Jiang. I think I must correct one point, which is… Chen Nan is Chairman Chen Yannian’s eldest granddaughter, not grandson. Which means…”
Jiang Yuetong suddenly reacted, stood up, and pointed at Chen Nan, saying, “You’re a woman?”
