A Paper Contract GL - Chapter 6
Chen Nan returned directly to the office. The thought that she could only manage this small business made Chen Nan feel very uncomfortable. She really didn’t know where Jiang Yuetong had popped up from, or why her grandfather was so supportive of her. Chen Nan racked her brain trying to figure out what was going on.
Arriving at the office on the fifth floor of the restaurant, she saw her subordinates eating lunch at their desks. Chen Nan looked at them crossly, thinking they still had the mind to eat when in a few days even the company would belong to someone else. Now her grandfather had only left this small restaurant for her. How could this small restaurant support so many people? The next step would have to be layoffs. “Sigh…” Chen Nan shook her head as she looked at them.
The secretary saw Chen Nan return and quickly looked up from her bowl of zha jiang mian (noodles with soybean paste), politely asking, “General Manager, would you like some zha jiang mian? It tastes quite good.” Even though she saw Chen Nan’s face was ashen and awful, looking like she was about to explode, as her secretary, she couldn’t just say nothing.
“Hurry up and eat! Finish up and quickly review yesterday’s client orders. Don’t make the same mistake as last time. Make one more mistake, and you can pack your bags and leave. Anyway, we have too many people here as it is.” After saying that, Chen Nan coldly walked into her office. Actually, Chen Nan was just saying it; if she really had to lay off people, she wouldn’t bear to. These were all people she had carefully trained. Even if her current assets were limited, there would be a day when she had more, and the people she had cultivated would be useful.
Chen Nan sat in her chair, lost in thought. She knew that simply worrying wouldn’t help. She had to find that Jiang Yuetong; only she was the cure.
Jiang Yuetong was standing behind a student; the whole class was silent. This student was the most fond of sleeping in the entire class, falling asleep during class almost every day. Jiang Yuetong was helpless. She had reprimanded him several times, but he never learned his lesson and would sleep again next time. This time, it was even worse: he had started snoring while sleeping. He seemed to be truly enjoying his nap.
Jiang Yuetong poked the student’s back with her long pointer. The force was neither too light nor too heavy, but the student merely scratched his back, turned his head, shifted his posture, and continued to sleep. Jiang Yuetong truly had no recourse against him. The student next to him couldn’t stand it and gave the sleeping student a hard shove, which finally woke him up. He complained to the nearby student, “Hey, the teacher isn’t even here, why did you push me!”
“Who says she isn’t here? Turn around and see who is standing behind you.”
The student turned his head and saw the stern-faced Jiang Yuetong.
Jiang Yuetong brought the student to the office and lectured him, “Try snoring and sleeping one more time, and see how I deal with you. I will definitely call your parents!”
The student countered, “Then is it okay if I sleep without snoring?”
“No, it is not!” Jiang Yuetong was truly defeated by these eccentric children. “Tell me, what do you plan to do in the future?”
The student lowered his head and admitted his mistake, “Sorry, Teacher. I won’t do it again.”
“Fine, I will believe you one more time. No more sleeping, remember.”
Li Haitao, the math teacher who shared an office with Jiang Yuetong, said to her after the student left, “Actually, this student is quite good. He’s always number one in math.”
Jiang Yuetong nodded, “Yes, I know that. He’s very good in all his other subjects too. It’s just that he particularly dislikes studying Chinese Language Arts, so he sleeps every time he comes to my class. He could be considered a genius child, but nowadays, China requires students to develop comprehensively. Even if he excels in everything else, if his Chinese is poor, it will be very difficult for him to get into a good university.” Jiang Yuetong spoke earnestly.
Li Haitao didn’t say anything, but his gaze lingered on Jiang Yuetong’s face, hinting at a different meaning.
Jiang Yuetong felt a little uneasy and touched her face. “What is it, Teacher Li? Is there something on my face?”
“No, no.” Only then did Li Haitao realize that staring at Jiang Yuetong was not normal, but he suddenly found Jiang Yuetong exceptionally beautiful.
“Well, Teacher Li, I’m clocking out now. I’m going to Shenzhen with a good friend today,” Jiang Yuetong smiled. “Tomorrow is the weekend, so I’m going somewhere far away, otherwise my mother will arrange another blind date for me. It’s so annoying.”
Li Haitao lowered his head, avoiding Jiang Yuetong’s eyes. “You still don’t have a boyfriend.”
“That’s right,” Jiang Yuetong replied.
“How can someone as pretty as you not have a boyfriend?” Li Haitao secretly rejoiced in his heart.
“Am I pretty?” Jiang Yuetong couldn’t help but turn to look at herself in the mirror, smiling faintly. “I just keep failing to meet the right person, so I have no choice but to keep going on blind dates. Okay, Teacher Li, I won’t talk to you anymore, I have to go.” With that, Jiang Yuetong picked up her handbag and left.
Li Haitao watched Jiang Yuetong’s retreating figure, his mind filled with endless imagination. What met Li Haitao’s eyes was a refreshing and elegant color, and what remained deep in his nose was a sexy fragrance. Li Haitao repeatedly chewed over Jiang Yuetong’s words, “I still don’t have a boyfriend…”
Li Haitao, who was also unmarried, seemed to see hope and a future.
While Li Haitao was still in a daze, someone pushed the door open, their voice neither rough nor delicate, “Is Jiang Yuetong here?”
“Are you looking for her…” Li Haitao came back to his senses and turned to look at the visitor. “What do you need her for?”
“Uh… she’s not here?” Chen Nan tilted her head, asking handsomely, though her face remained cold and unreadable.
“She just left work. Are you a student’s parent?” Li Haitao asked.
Chen Nan shook her head. “Then I’ll come back another day.” With that, Chen Nan left.
Jiang Yuetong, who had walked quite far, suddenly realized she hadn’t brought her wallet. She smacked her head, begrudgingly having to turn back. As she re-entered the school gate, Chen Nan’s red BMW sports car was just pulling out. Jiang Yuetong didn’t see her because she was focused on rushing back to the office for her wallet. After several days, she had almost forgotten about Chen Nan and the will.
As soon as Chen Nan saw Jiang Yuetong rushing back, she first honked the horn, immediately pulled the car over, opened the door, and shouted, “Jiang Yuetong!”
Jiang Yuetong stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Chen Nan. The wind blew Jiang Yuetong’s long, curly hair. Because the weather was hot today, Jiang Yuetong had tied her hair into a ponytail. This hairstyle was very youthful; if one didn’t look carefully, they might mistake Jiang Yuetong for a student at the school.
Chen Nan got out of the car, stood there, and tried hard to squeeze out a smile. She wasn’t here today to argue with Jiang Yuetong. If they argued again, the hundreds of millions in family fortune would quickly fly away, so even if it was fake, Chen Nan had to put on an act. However, Chen Nan’s smile was too fake, like the Big Bad Wolf putting on a sheepskin to pretend to be a sheep. In short, it felt particularly strange.
“Come on, let’s go get a drink.” Chen Nan opened the car door for Jiang Yuetong. Jiang Yuetong thought about it and got in. There were, after all, some things that needed to be clarified.
The two sat in a Starbucks cafe. The coffee was quickly served, and Jiang Yuetong picked it up and took a sip.
“My grandpa wants us to… get married.” As soon as Chen Nan’s words fell, the coffee Jiang Yuetong was drinking almost sprayed out. If she hadn’t worked hard to maintain her ladylike image, the coffee would have already been splattered onto Chen Nan.
“Your grandpa? I’ve told you many times, I really don’t know him.” Jiang Yuetong truly didn’t want to repeat this sentence anymore. I don’t know your grandpa was the phrase she had said the most recently. Chen Nan wasn’t tired of hearing it, but Jiang Yuetong was tired of saying it.
“Whether you know my grandpa or not is no longer important. You don’t need to emphasize that point. The reality is that my grandpa has chosen you.” Chen Nan took a cube of sugar and placed it in her cup.
“You people are ridiculous. This is not the age of monarchs, nor is it the time for selecting a queen. Moreover, you are not monarchs. It’s true you have money, but you can’t be so overbearing, can you?” For some reason, every time they talked, a smell of gunpowder slowly started to emerge. They had intended to talk nicely, but the conversation only got uglier.
Chen Nan spoke loudly, “Regardless, no matter what age it is, Grandpa now wants you to marry me. You, and me. Do you understand?”
Someone nearby secretly glanced over. Jiang Yuetong bit her lip. She really didn’t know what Chen Nan was thinking, talking so loudly about two women getting married.
“Please, can you stop constantly saying the word ‘marry’? Haven’t you noticed people looking at us? You might not care about what others think, but I do!” Jiang Yuetong almost spoke through gritted teeth, squeezing out the words. It seemed that next time she ate with Chen Nan or did anything with her, it would be best to find the most crowded and noisy street food stall. At least everyone would be enthusiastically eating, and no one would pay attention to what they were talking about.
Chen Nan glanced around with her peripheral vision, then lowered her voice. “Fine, I didn’t come here today to argue with you. I’ll explain the situation properly, and please listen to me calmly.”
Jiang Yuetong nodded. If Chen Nan had spoken like this earlier, maybe things would have been resolved sooner, and she wouldn’t still be so confused about the whole matter.
Chen Nan relayed the entire sequence of events to Jiang Yuetong, honestly and in full detail, including the relevant information in the will. Everything was explained to Jiang Yuetong.
Jiang Yuetong finally understood what had happened. “Chen Nan, you mean to say that your grandfather, Mr. Chen Yannian, has given all the inheritance to me, but we must get married to receive it, is that right?” No matter how Jiang Yuetong thought about it, it seemed impossible, yet it had truly happened. If she were a typical girl, she would have been frantic with excitement long ago, eager to grab Chen Nan’s hand and rush to the church. But Jiang Yuetong was not that excited, because she had always been quite indifferent to money.
“Yes, that’s one way to understand it.” Chen Nan finished her coffee and ordered another cup. “Jiang Yuetong, ever since your name appeared in the will, you’ve had an inseparable connection to the whole matter. I know that asking you to marry me is something that can’t be done immediately…”
Jiang Yuetong nodded in agreement.
Chen Nan rolled her eyes at her and continued, “It’s the same for me. I don’t want to…” Chen Nan thought for a moment and said, “I don’t want to marry you immediately either.”
“You keep talking about marriage, marriage to me, and I’m still not sure if you’re a scammer.”
