A Paper Contract GL - Chapter 7
“Me?” Chen Nan pointed at herself, finding Jiang Yuetong’s question quite amusing. “Didn’t you go home and Baidu (Internet) me? Fine, I’ll show you.” With that, Chen Nan took out her tablet and searched for the page where she was listed as one of Guangzhou’s Top Ten Outstanding Young People from the previous year. “Look, Chen Nan, Vice General Manager of Tianqi Group’s Catering Division. The photo is also me, right?”
Jiang Yuetong took it and looked closely. It was indeed correct.
“Alright, now that my identity is confirmed, Teacher Jiang Yuetong, what are your plans?” Chen Nan frowned slightly. “Now, Grandpa has tied us together through the will. To prevent our family assets from falling into the hands of outsiders, I must fight for them. Therefore, listen carefully,” Chen Nan said, enunciating every word with conviction, “I will date you!”
“Didn’t you say you didn’t want to marry me? I didn’t hear wrong, did I?” Jiang Yuetong looked deeply at Chen Nan.
Chen Nan’s expression suddenly changed. “I don’t want to marry you, but there’s the will! How many times do you want me to say it!” If Jiang Yuetong were Chen Nan’s employee, she would probably have been fired long ago.
“It’s your words that are contradictory. You don’t want to marry me, yet you want to date me. Strange!” Jiang Yuetong stared at Chen Nan with wide eyes. Chen Nan’s face darkened slightly and she said, “Grandpa said that if we genuinely date for a period of time and are still incompatible, he will change the will. But he said the dating must be genuine, sincere dating.”
Jiang Yuetong smiled and said, “Then just agree to it. Just say you’re dating sincerely, and then later say you’re incompatible. How would he know you’re lying to him?”
The trademark cold sneer that Chen Nan usually wore appeared on her lips. “Do you think my grandpa is an idiot? He definitely has his ways of knowing whether we are genuinely dating. I would never underestimate my grandpa’s capabilities, and I advise you not to either. There’s nothing he can’t find out if he wants to. I never dare to lie to him, because I know the consequences of deceiving him are severe.” Chen Nan sneered coldly. “Little girl, it’s better if you aren’t so naive.”
“So, you mean I must date you?” Jiang Yuetong asked.
Before Chen Nan could respond, her phone rang. Chen Nan answered the phone directly without even saying “excuse me.” After listening for about ten seconds, her eyebrows began to knit together, and she began to scold, “Secretary Wu, can’t you even solve such a small problem? Are you even a secretary? Do you have any IQ at all! Goddammit… you’re infuriating me…”
Jiang Yuetong’s face almost turned green listening to the call. Perhaps because she came from an educated family and was a teacher herself, she rarely heard such foul language. She felt a bit out of breath, wondering how Chen Nan, as a woman, could utter such profanity so fluently without batting an eye. Jiang Yuetong swore that if she were Chen Nan’s subordinate, the secretary currently on the call, she would definitely submit her resignation the next day. She wouldn’t care how much she earned a month; being verbally abused was unacceptable.
Chen Nan then said, “Alright, I’m busy right now. Go contact the people from the commerce department, and we’ll figure out the next step later.” As Chen Nan hung up, she didn’t forget to threaten her employee once more. “If you can’t handle this matter properly, write out your resignation and give it to me.”
“Alright, where were we?” Chen Nan’s face was still clouded with anger. Lately, nothing had gone smoothly for her.
Jiang Yuetong smiled slightly and said, “Write out your resignation and give it to me.” Jiang Yuetong was repeating Chen Nan’s words.
Chen Nan smiled helplessly. “You still have the nerve to joke with me.”
Jiang Yuetong slowly stopped smiling and said seriously, “There is a student in my class. He has excellent character and is outstanding in all aspects. He is a rare genius in a certain field, but he always falls asleep during my Chinese class. Of course, that’s not the point. The point is, I believe that if he is properly nurtured, he might even change history.”
Chen Nan said, “What are you trying to say?”
Jiang Yuetong said, “He lives with his grandfather now, and his living and studying conditions are not very good. If things continue this way, there is a risk of him dropping out. He needs someone to sponsor him.”
“You mean?” Chen Nan drew out the sound.
“If you are willing to sponsor him, I am willing to agree to some of your requests—for example, dating you, and then later saying we are incompatible so your grandfather changes the will. But the prerequisite is that you must sponsor him.” Jiang Yuetong looked into Chen Nan’s eyes.
Chen Nan snorted lightly. “That’s nothing difficult, a piece of cake. If our family’s stock doesn’t fall, the fraction of the money would be enough to sponsor all the students in your school.” Chen Nan hadn’t expected Jiang Yuetong to make such a request, one that wasn’t for herself but for a student in her class. If it were any other woman, they would surely demand a house, a car, and all the luxuries they could get, right? After all, not everyone gets the opportunity to sit at a table with the most likely successor of the Tianqi Group to discuss a deal.
“Alright, then should we write an agreement now?” Jiang Yuetong pulled a piece of paper from her bag. “We are already making a transaction. I will genuinely date you for a period of time and then help you deal with your grandfather to make him rewrite the will, and you promise to sponsor the student in my class. How can we do this without writing it down clearly? What if you don’t keep your word? You should know that the genius student in my class desperately needs money right now.”
Chen Nan had no reason not to nod. The person who was always in control of others suddenly felt led by the nose by this little teacher. Chen Nan felt extremely awkward.
After signing the agreement, the two walked out of the Starbucks together. Finally, the two could speak a couple of words calmly, without the immediate scent of gunpowder.
“Where are you going? I’ll give you a ride.” Chen Nan opened the door of her BMW sports car.
“No need, I can take the subway.” Jiang Yuetong smiled slightly.
“Remember, stick to our agreement, Jiang Yuetong.” Chen Nan shook the document in her hand at Jiang Yuetong.
Jiang Yuetong nodded. “Don’t worry. You, too, don’t forget you have to keep your end of the deal.”
After parting with Chen Nan, Jiang Yuetong saw that it was still early and went to the hospital where her good friend Li Qiong worked. Li Qiong was on the night shift, and there weren’t many patients at the moment, so the two started chatting.
“Do you remember the person I mentioned to you last time, Chen Nan?” Jiang Yuetong handed the agreement she had just signed with Chen Nan to Li Qiong.
Li Qiong took it and immediately burst out laughing. “Hey, who needs to write an agreement just to date? You two are truly interesting. I’ve never seen anyone like you.”
Jiang Yuetong scoffed. “Although it’s supposed to be ‘genuine dating’ to fool her grandfather, dating her or being friends with her will definitely be a painful experience. Do you know she’s extremely self-centered, highly suspicious, and has a terrible temper? I think she has no redeeming qualities except for being handsome. I really don’t know what we’ll do together.” Jiang Yuetong finished speaking and shook her head.
“Isn’t being handsome enough? She’s so rich, of course she’s self-centered. She definitely doesn’t lack women; they probably all rush to her, begging to sleep with her or be taken care of. So, having a bad temper is pretty normal.”
Jiang Yuetong glanced at the agreement and said, “It also stipulates that we have to meet in public once a week. That’s really going to be difficult. It looks like I won’t have a single good day each week.”
Li Qiong said, “Even though you think that way, you didn’t get anything for yourself. You’re only working hard for your student.”
Jiang Yuetong looked at Li Qiong. “Are you talking about money? I don’t care about that. The request I made wasn’t excessive, right? Chen Nan has plenty of money. Instead of squandering it randomly, why not help the poor?” Jiang Yuetong said from the heart.
Li Qiong looked at Jiang Yuetong with admiration. “Sigh, I really wonder if there are any other girls in this world as kind as you.”
It was already very late, and Chen Nan was driving back to her workplace. A person who prioritizes work like her almost always sleeps at her office, unless she has a girlfriend she particularly likes. Otherwise, the workplace is Chen Nan’s first choice. However, recently, due to the will and the Jiang Yuetong situation, she was in no mood to look for other women.
Dialing her phone, she realized there weren’t many people she could truly communicate with, but Chen Nan had to find someone to talk to, or she would be stifled to death.
“Where are you?” Chen Nan called Zhang Manyang.
“At the law firm. I have a court case tomorrow, so I’ll probably be pulling an all-nighter tonight. What’s up? Is something wrong?”
“Of course something’s wrong if I’m calling you. Let’s meet. There’s something that needs a legal solution,” Chen Nan’s voice came through. “You’re the exclusive lawyer for Tianqi Group; all other matters must be prioritized after Tianqi Group.”
“Hey! Didn’t we already resolve the will issue? I’m genuinely quite busy tonight.”
Chen Nan said dictatorially, “It’s not about that; it’s about something else. Come to the restaurant where I work.”
“If you need to see me, you should come here. You can’t never come to my place…” Before Zhang Manyang could finish, Chen Nan hung up the phone. She never allowed anyone to resist her commands and was only satisfied when they were executed unconditionally.
Half an hour later, Zhang Manyang appeared in Chen Nan’s office. Chen Nan immediately showed her the agreement she had signed with Jiang Yuetong. “Oh, who is this person?” Zhang Manyang saw information about a third party on the agreement.
“That person is a student in Jiang Yuetong’s class whom she wants me to sponsor. Just read it carefully and you’ll understand everything.” Chen Nan let out a deep, long sigh. “She led me by the nose. This was all meticulously planned by her. Maybe this was her goal from the very beginning, only she pretended not to know my grandfather or anything. Everything was an act.”
“She really isn’t an ordinary girl,” Zhang Manyang looked closely at the agreement they signed. “Look, she says she’ll agree to all your requests, but only requires you to sponsor her student. The fact that she thought of someone else instead of herself—don’t you think she’s quite admirable as a teacher?”
“Bullshit! I seriously want to curse right now,” Chen Nan said angrily. “This little teacher forced me to write this written agreement, saying she didn’t trust me and that it had to be written down. And she even demanded that I get a notarized copy from the law firm to give her. Damn it!”
