- Episode 2.27 - "Thank You for Everything, Goodbye"
The sea at dawn.
There were almost no people around. Only the sound of the waves echoed in the quiet morning. Sitting on the seawall, Shizuku Mizuhara remained silent. Wakamatsu Kaede, sitting beside her, listened to the sound of the waves while watching her profile.
“It feels like we’re the only two people in the world when there’s no one else around, huh?”
Wakamatsu Kaede was happy.
He loved his parents, his friends, his teachers—everyone who had been a part of his life.
Even so, as long as Shizuku Mizuhara was by his side, he felt like he could get through anything.
His love for her was blind and all-consuming.
“…You wanted to know why I chose you, didn’t you?”
Shizuku Mizuhara suddenly spoke.
“Well, I was curious, yeah.”
“When my sister disappeared, I stopped caring about everything.”
Wakamatsu sensed something was wrong when he saw her take off the matching ring from her finger without any emotion.
“I thought if I could become special to someone special, I’d feel better.”
“Huh?”
“You know, like, I’d feel superior. And that would feel good.”
Her words were vague, and Wakamatsu tilted his head, unable to understand.
“What are you saying all of a sudden?”
“I told you before, right? You were just right for me.”
“Just right? What do you mean?”
Shizuku Mizuhara slowly turned to face Wakamatsu.
Their eyes met, yet he couldn’t read anything from her gaze.
“To replace my sister.”
“…What?”
The words hit him before he could even put on a composed expression.
Did she choose him just to fill the void left by her missing sister?
“I kept wondering how I could fill the hole in my heart.”
“Shizuku, what are you talking about…?”
“But then it came to me. I should find someone to fill that hole.”
A cold sensation spread through his body.
Bit by bit, he began to process her words.
“And that someone was you, Wakamatsu.”
His heart pounded in an unpleasant way.
The sound of the waves grew distant.
“You were popular at school. A special person.”
“You stayed by my side even when I acted like my true self. That was comfortable for me.”
“And most of all, you always kept your promises.”
He had no words to respond. His face stiffened, and his body temperature dropped rapidly.
“…So, you were just right.”
Cold sweat wouldn’t stop.
The damp air brushing against his cheek felt unbearably unpleasant now.
“You kept your promise and made me feel special.”
“H-Hey, wait a minute.”
“I was happy, but I think I’m done now.”
“Hold on. Just stop for a second, Shizuku.”
But she didn’t stop.
Her voice was mechanical, emotionless.
“Just wait a second!”
His voice came out louder than he intended.
Shizuku fell silent.
Only the sound of the waves filled the space between them again.
His mouth was dry.
Still, he forced himself to speak.
“What… is this some kind of joke? Please, stop messing around.”
“It’s not a joke.”
“Shizuku!”
She stared at the waves as she answered.
Her expression made it clear this wasn’t a joke.
But he didn’t want to believe it.
“No way… You couldn’t do something like that!”
“Something like what?”
“Toying with someone’s feelings like that! You’re not that kind of person!”
He grabbed her shoulders and turned her to face him.
Even when she saw his trembling, tear-streaked face, she showed no sign of emotion.
“I could, though.”
“No… You’re not like that, Shizuku…”
“What do you know about me, Wakamatsu? You don’t know anything.”
Her rejection left him speechless.
“…I do feel bad for taking advantage of your kindness.”
“Shizuku…!”
He fought back his tears.
If he cried now, it would feel like he was accepting her words as the truth.
“I got to be special to the popular Wakamatsu Kaede.”
“I was happy, but in the end, you weren’t enough.”
The cruel words hit him one after another.
He had no words to fight back.
His tears spilled uncontrollably.
“Please… just say you’re joking.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
Shizuku gently removed his hands from her shoulders.
She was slowly peeling away the last thread holding them together.
“I finally understand. The hole left by someone can only be filled by that person.”
“So, this is it. It’s time to end things.”
His mind went blank.
He wanted to believe this was a nightmare.
But the salty sea breeze, the damp air, and the tremors shaking his body told him it was real.
His thoughts stopped.
“You understand now, don’t you?”
Shizuku stood up and dusted off the sand from her pants.
She looked down at him as he sat there, slumped forward.
And in a cold voice, she spoke the final words.
“I want to break up.”
His heart clenched so tightly it felt like it would burst.
The shock was overwhelming.
Tears wouldn’t stop.
Drops of them fell onto his legs.
“No… I don’t want to break up…”
“Why? There’s no reason for us to be together anymore.”
“Reason? That doesn’t…”
He reached out, grabbing her arm in one last desperate attempt to hold on.
But she ignored it and pushed forward.
“I want to break up.
One person wants to leave, so that’s the end. That’s how it works.”
She shook off his grip.
It was really over.
“Thank you for everything. Goodbye.”
With just those words, Shizuku Mizuhara walked away.
Wakamatsu Kaede sat frozen in place, head hanging low.
He stared at the ground, processing her words, replaying them in his head.
She had delivered such a cruel truth in the calmest way possible.
He couldn’t hear the sound of the waves anymore.
