- Episode 2.4 - "I'll Stay Here Until You Wake Up"
Friday, April 15
The doorbell rang.
“Hey, Mizuhara?”
At the entrance of Mizuhara Shizuku’s apartment building, Wakamatsu Kaede waited for her response. She had gone home once to change into comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Maybe Mizuhara wasn’t back yet? Just as she pressed the doorbell for the second time, a muffled voice answered.
“Yes?”
“Oh, Mizuhara! I brought snacks.”
“I told you not to come today, didn’t I?”
“Huh?”
Kaede quickly pulled out her phone to check. Sure enough, there was a message from Mizuhara: You don’t have to come today.
“Ah, sorry! I didn’t see that.”
“Then go home.”
Hearing Mizuhara’s tone, Kaede panicked, worried she might hang up.
“Hey, at least take the snacks? I’ll bring them to your door.”
“…Fine.”
With that, the entrance door unlocked, and Kaede stepped into the lobby.
She took the elevator to the sixth floor and walked to Mizuhara’s apartment.
When she rang the doorbell again, Mizuhara opened it, looking pale.
“Whoa, are you okay? Do you feel sick?”
“It’s my period… It’s pretty rough today.”
“Is it bad?”
“You seem like the type who doesn’t get bad ones, huh?”
Mizuhara gave a weak smile.
Period pain varies from person to person. Fortunately, Kaede never had severe symptoms or mood swings. But Mizuhara looked completely drained. Kaede rummaged through the bag she had brought. She was sure she had packed peach and mandarin jelly for them to share.
“Can I come in?”
“No. Go home.”
“We’re dating, right? It’s okay if I take care of you.”
She used the word dating to get Mizuhara’s permission.
As she stepped into the room, she saw signs that Mizuhara had been lying down.
“I brought jelly. Want some?”
“I’ll have it later. My stomach will get cold.”
“Oh, right. Then I’ll go buy you something warm to drink.”
“It’s fine. I already made myself some green tea.”
“Oh… okay.”
Kaede felt useless.
She stood there awkwardly as Mizuhara lay back down, covering her stomach with a towel and taking deep breaths.
“Sorry for being no help,” Kaede mumbled, kneeling beside the bed and bowing her head. She had woken Mizuhara up with the doorbell and barged in despite being told not to.
Mizuhara chuckled.
“Why are you apologizing? I’m actually happy.”
“Sorry…”
“The medicine should start working soon. Then we can eat the jelly.”
Kaede felt a warm feeling spread in her heart.
“Is it your stomach that hurts? Or your lower back?”
“My stomach is heavier and hurts more today. Oh, I know.”
Mizuhara reached out from the bed and grabbed Kaede’s right hand, resting on her thigh. Then she pulled it toward her stomach.
“Rub my stomach for me.”
She let go of Kaede’s hand.
Kaede knelt by the bed, placed one hand on it for support, and started rubbing Mizuhara’s stomach gently.
“Slower… and press just a little,” Mizuhara instructed.
Following her guidance, Kaede moved her hand carefully, passing on her warmth through each motion.
“That feels nice… It’s helping.”
Mizuhara looked sleepy. Seeing her like this—so defenseless—made Kaede feel a sudden wave of affection.
“You can sleep,” she said softly, continuing the soothing motions. Mizuhara’s eyelids slowly drooped.
“Sorry… I might fall asleep.”
“It’s fine. I’ll stay here until you wake up.”
Within minutes, Mizuhara drifted into sleep.
Period pain wasn’t just about cramps—it could come with headaches, backaches, fever, exhaustion, and overwhelming drowsiness.
Kaede watched Mizuhara’s peaceful face and shifted to rub her lower back as well.
I hope she feels even a little better when she wakes up.
—
A sudden jolt shocked Kaede awake.
“Haha, so you finally woke up.”
She heard laughter above her.
Forcing open her heavy eyelids, she saw Mizuhara standing over her, looking much better. But strangely, Kaede was now lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling.
Wait… wasn’t I rubbing her stomach before?
“Huh? What happened…?”
“When I woke up, you were using my stomach as a pillow.”
“My stomach as a pillow!?”
Of all things, she had rested her head on the stomach of someone in pain.
“S-Sorry, Mizuhara! I’m really sorry!”
Kaede immediately sat up and bowed deeply in apology.
Mizuhara giggled.
“You don’t have to apologize so much.”
She must have felt better after sleeping—the medicine must have kicked in.
“Let’s eat the jelly.”
Mizuhara smiled softly.
The two of them shared the jelly in peaceful silence.
