- Chapter 8 - Sweet Osmanthus Cake That Warms the Heart
Li was overjoyed and happily went into the kitchen to prepare extra dishes.
The Tang family owned twenty acres of fertile land, and with spring planting in full swing, Old Man Tang took his two sons to work in the fields after confirming that Xiaofu was fine.
Without modern factories or concrete buildings, the village felt peaceful.
Tang Xiaofu held a cup of honey water and sat under the jujube tree in the courtyard, gazing into the distance. Wisps of smoke curled from chimneys across the village.
The scenery was full of life—lush green mountains in the background, the constant clucking of chickens and barking of dogs in the village.
From different households, mothers’ voices calling their children home for meals rose and fell. Tang Xiaofu couldn’t help but smile.
As passersby greeted him, he returned their smiles with a slight nod but didn’t say much, wary of making mistakes by speaking too much.
The Tang family was considered well-off in the village. Their home had four large tiled rooms, making them stand out among the many thatched and mud houses.
Behind the house was a vegetable garden and a pigsty, while the southwest corner of the front yard housed a chicken coop.
Li was a diligent woman, keeping both the inside and outside of the house neat and organized.
In his past life, Xiaofu had been an orphan, longing for family warmth but never getting it. Now, he felt truly blessed.
There was no need for endless competition, no fear of working overtime to death—he could finally relax. Tang Xiaofu slumped in his chair like a contented, lazy fish.
Before long, Zhao Xiangbei returned, driving the ox cart. Seeing Xiaofu, he grinned and pulled out an oil-paper package from his coat.
“These are Osmanthus cakes from Guangshun Zhai. I heard that all the young masters in town love them.”
Tang Xiaofu took the cake, took a bite, and his eyes lit up—it was soft, sweet, and carried a light fragrance of Osmanthus flowers.
“This is delicious!”
The man chuckled foolishly and lifted a piece of lamb he was carrying.
“I happened to see someone selling lamb in town, so I bought some. I—I’ll take it inside and ask Mother to make stew for you to nourish your body.”
Tang Xiaofu gave him a sweet smile. Sure enough, he saw the big guy’s ears turn red. Haha, this was too amusing.
Li was a skilled cook, and since lamb was rare, she made a lamb and radish soup.
Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, Xiaofu secretly replaced the radish with the ones freshly harvested from his mystical space.
Soon, the lamb soup bubbled away, filling the house with an irresistible aroma.
Even the neighbors, the Shi family, craned their necks and peeked over eagerly.
Old Lady Shi, known for being shameless, immediately asked for a bowl to taste.
Li flatly refused.
Since the Tang family hadn’t yet split up, all ten-plus members still ate together.
As the setting sun cast a golden glow, the three men returned home from the fields.
From a distance, the second son of the Tang family shouted excitedly, “Dad! They’re cooking meat at home! Mother made something really delicious today!”
Old Man Tang chuckled and scolded him, “Such a glutton! No ambition at all.”
Then, spotting Tang Xiaofu sitting outside, he quickly said, “Xiaofu, be careful of the evening chill. Your body is still weak. Go inside.”
“Yes, yes! Xiaofu, go inside. I’ll get you a chair,” added the second son.
Tall, dark-skinned, and not very talkative, Tang’s second brother had always doted on Xiaofu the most.
Looking at his affectionate family members, Xiaofu felt his heart warm. Perhaps it was the influence of the body’s original owner, but he felt closer to them than expected.
“Alright, Dad, Second Brother, come in quickly. Mother made lamb and radish soup today, and it smells amazing!”
Everyone entered the house, where Li had already set the table in the courtyard.
The mystical space’s radishes made the soup exceptionally rich and fragrant, enhancing the lamb’s natural sweetness tenfold. The entire family ate eagerly, heads down, not speaking a word.
This soup was so delicious that it could even be sold at a restaurant!
Tang Xiaofu happily enjoyed his meal. His bowl was filled to the brim with lamb, all given to him by Li.
“My poor child, you’ve suffered so much. Eat more and nourish yourself,” she said, her voice full of love.
Xiaofu noticed the unhappy expression on the eldest daughter-in-law’s face and lowered his gaze. He picked up some lamb and placed it in Old Man Tang’s and Li’s bowls.
“Mother, you should eat too. The doctor said I’m already much better.”
A flicker of discontent crossed Wang Yi’s face. She quickly scooped up some lamb and placed it in her husband’s bowl.
“Darang, you should eat more. Working at the restaurant is exhausting, both physically and mentally. Lamb is great for replenishing energy.”
