- Chapter 2 - Thorned Rose
In the emergency room washed in white, Lu Xueyin stood out like a vivid, dazzling color.
Sweat had soaked her nightdress, darkening the fabric into a rich, almost seductive shade of blue.
Her graceful figure was tightly wrapped, every curve revealed with perfect balance.
With permission, a nurse removed her mask, revealing a stunning face with striking bone structure.
Her long, slightly curled hair fell loosely over her shoulders, gently covering her delicate collarbones.
A blush still lingered on her cheeks. Through the gap in the slightly open door, she looked toward Sheng Lan. Her eyes were hazy and dreamy, naturally carrying a hint of seduction.
It felt intentional.
Sheng Lan turned to glance at her.
Her vision was sharp.
She could clearly see the lines on Lu Xueyin’s red lips.
They were dry and slightly cracked from the fever and dehydration.
Yet oddly, they also looked a little moist.
Sheng Lan wondered what her lips would feel like.
What she really meant was that she wanted to kiss her.
That thought felt wild.
Sheng Lan politely closed the emergency room door and said to Meng Chan, “I only used a cooling suppressant on the way here. My gas mask has a filtration system. I didn’t use any injections or take medicine.”
She paused.
“I don’t know if Lu Xueyin took anything herself.”
When Sheng Lan found Lu Xueyin, she had been at the entryway. It was possible she had already gone through the medicine box in the living room.
The suppressants might have been replaced with inducers. As for the other injections and pills, there was no way to be sure.
Meng Chan tore off a diagnosis slip and placed it in Sheng Lan’s hand.
“That means you’re done here. Go get your fever shot.”
Now that Lu Xueyin was in Meng Chan’s care, Sheng Lan felt completely at ease.
In the original story, Meng Chan was the only one who repeatedly tried to stop the abusive Alpha from being controlling and violent. Every time Lu Xueyin was forcibly marked, it was Meng Chan who treated her.
Their relationship had grown distant over time because the Alpha refused to listen.
Later, when Lu Xueyin was accused of intentionally guiding fans to publicly shame the Alpha online, it was Meng Chan who came forward with evidence to defend her.
Sheng Lan had mixed feelings.
She mentally gave Meng Chan credit for being a genuinely good person.
Unamused, Meng Chan turned around and walked back into the emergency room.
Sheng Lan’s eyes followed her.
Lu Xueyin was still standing there. Her long dark hair had been pinned up, revealing a slender swan-like neck.
A black testing patch was placed over her pheromone gland.
The patch was large, but it could not hide the deep and vivid allure surrounding Lu Xueyin. In fact, it seemed to make it stronger, a quiet but unmistakable temptation.
Even in a space filled with suppressants and freshly sprayed neutralizers, that feeling still lingered.
As the door opened and closed briefly, for just a few seconds, Sheng Lan felt as if she were standing in a rose garden in May. The heat seemed to crash over her, making her sway on her feet.
Today had been unexpected for Sheng Lan as well.
After living freely for twenty-three years, her family finally forced her into marriage.
They were firm, direct, and left no room for refusal. They arranged the marriage for her and told her to either accept it or leave the entertainment industry.
There was no need to describe how frustrated she felt.
Her sensitivity during the susceptible period made her moody and irritable. While still running a high fever, she rushed into a marriage just to get it over with. To avoid the questions and gossip, she turned off her phone, took fever medicine, and went to sleep.
But the fever didn’t go down. Instead, it triggered a full hormonal awakening.
Because the Alpha’s behavior had been so extreme, at first Sheng Lan thought it was a nightmare. She felt like she had walked straight into the grave of marriage. She even wanted to roll over and go back to sleep.
But what happened to Lu Xueyin was too terrible to ignore. Sheng Lan felt guilty for not coming home on their wedding night. Feeling anxious, she forced herself to stay awake and called Lu Xueyin.
Her phone couldn’t be reached.
Sheng Lan then called a friend who had promised to stand up for her. The friend laughed and said, “If it weren’t for your reputation, there would probably be ten people on top of her already.”
Sheng Lan cursed loudly.
She got up without hesitation and rushed to the new house in the suburbs.
That brought her to this moment.
Shaking her head, she took the diagnosis slip to the nurse to get her injection and medication.
As an Alpha, her body was usually strong and rarely got sick. But when she did fall ill, even a small fever would become much worse than normal.
She had already used many cooling suppressants on the way here, and the continued drop in body temperature had actually made her fever rise another degree.
Her temperature was 39.2 degrees.
She took a photo of the reading for the record.
After getting hooked up to the IV drip, she turned off airplane mode. Messages from every direction flooded in all at once.
She didn’t have the energy to deal with them tonight. Instead, she searched names and found the ones she needed.
She needed to gather evidence from the toxic room.
Whoever had placed the inducers had to be caught.
The people who threatened or intimidated Lu Xueyin needed to be held accountable.
She also needed to retrieve Lu Xueyin’s phone.
And while she was at it, she ordered some food delivery.
By the time she finished, her IV drip was also done.
Right then, a young nurse came to call her. Lu Xueyin’s emergency treatment was complete.
When she arrived, Lu Xueyin had already changed into a loose blue-and-white hospital gown. The oversized fit made her look especially small and fragile.
The unnatural blush had faded. Her face was now as pale as paper. Even her lips had lost their color, making her look worn out.
Only her almond-shaped eyes still held traces of emotion. One look from her could still make a heart skip.
Despite being out of emergency care, she still had no sense of security. Or perhaps, she simply didn’t trust Sheng Lan.
She had already been moved into a patient room but refused to lie down in the hospital bed. Instead, she stood stubbornly by the window, keeping her distance.
Like a small rose, trying with all its strength to stay upright while covered in sharp thorns.
Sheng Lan looked at Meng Chan.
“What’s her condition?”
Meng Chan replied, “She should stay overnight for observation, but she’s not cooperating.”
“She took too many inducers. Her pheromones are still unstable. Some of the tests have to be delayed until morning to make sure nothing gets missed.”
Lu Xueyin still needed more injections, and by the time she finished her IV drip, it would already be dawn.
After Sheng Lan finished speaking, Lu Xueyin also finally said something.
“I want to go home.”
Her pheromones were clearly still unstable. Even with scent blockers in the room, Sheng Lan could still catch a sweet and dizzying fragrance in the air.
She let out a quiet sigh, lowered her voice, and gently tried to reason with her.
“I did some research. If you take too many inducers, it can lead to pheromone imbalance. That condition is really difficult to deal with. I don’t think I need to explain how serious it is, right?”
Lu Xueyin’s face grew even paler.
There was still a tingling pain coming from her gland, and her body kept shifting between hot and cold.
She didn’t even have the strength to stand on her own and had to lean against the window for support.
Her mind told her it would be better to stay at the hospital and get treatment. There was nothing worse than leaving now.
But her instincts made her want to escape.
Lu Xueyin looked at Sheng Lan and said, “I want to make a call.”
Sheng Lan hesitated. She didn’t want to give her the phone.
She hadn’t had time to check it yet.
In situations like this, the phone always held trouble. There were always messages designed to create more conflict.
If Lu Xueyin got her phone back and someone sent her something disgusting or insulting right away, everything Sheng Lan had done tonight would be wasted.
After all that effort, she would still end up being dragged down like a disposable character.
She asked, “Are you trying to call your agent, Jiang Ling? I’ll dial the number. You can talk.”
Lu Xueyin lowered her eyes.
It looked like silent resistance, or maybe it was just quiet acceptance under pressure.
She recited the phone number.
As Sheng Lan dialed, a nurse came into the room pushing a cart filled with the medication Lu Xueyin would need that night.
The call didn’t go through, not once but twice.
They stood in awkward silence.
Some people never answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.
Lu Xueyin and Sheng Lan were from different parts of the entertainment world. One was a singer, the other a film actress. They had little to no interaction before this.
Since they had rushed into a flash marriage, their contacts hadn’t even been updated yet. It made sense that Jiang Ling didn’t pick up a strange number.
Sheng Lan said she would send a message first and then try calling again. She asked Lu Xueyin to listen to the doctor in the meantime.
Lu Xueyin looked at her with clear doubt in her eyes. It was the kind of look someone gave when they thought you were pretending to be helpful.
Sheng Lan felt frustrated.
“I’ll walk over and show you.”
But there was no way Lu Xueyin would let her get close.
Just then, Yu Cheng arrived with Sheng Lan’s phone. It was the one that had been taken from Lu Xueyin earlier. The moment broke the tension between them.
As soon as Lu Xueyin dialed the number, Jiang Ling’s voice came through loud and clear in the hospital room.
“You actually have time to call me tonight? Looks like your new wife isn’t all that impressive.”
The room fell into complete silence.
Sheng Lan tugged at the collar of her shirt and quietly undid one button.
While the others around her were feeling secondhand embarrassment, she was thinking something else entirely. So Lu Xueyin was this bold because her agent encouraged it.
Lu Xueyin quietly turned around and faced the window, her back to everyone.
The glass reflected the shapes of the people behind her.
Sheng Lan had left her soft pink-brown curls down. Her features were striking and full of energy. Just standing there, she seemed to glow and give off warmth.
She didn’t seem to take Jiang Ling’s words to heart. Instead, she complained that Yu Cheng hadn’t brought her clean clothes and asked Meng Chan for a hospital gown.
“Just give me one that fits for tonight.”
She then asked, “Can she eat something later?”
It was clear that “she” meant Lu Xueyin.
Sheng Lan had already ordered light food that would be easy to digest.
Meng Chan checked and said there was no problem.
Lu Xueyin didn’t respond. She lowered her voice and told Jiang Ling to come to the hospital.
Jiang Ling reacted with the same carefree tone.
“First night of marriage and you’re already in the hospital. So which is it? Are you just too tempting, or is she not even human? Pick one.”
Lu Xueyin closed her eyes. She didn’t offer any explanation.
She and Sheng Lan had worked in the same industry, but they had never done a project together. At most, they nodded at each other during events.
It was rare for any Alpha in the entertainment world to stay completely out of scandals. Compared to others who constantly made headlines, Sheng Lan had always seemed clean and composed.
Lu Xueyin had never heard anything bad about her.
That was why, when Jiang Ling found out about the marriage, she had even sent her blessings.
Lu Xueyin never expected this marriage to be perfect. She only hoped for mutual respect. If there was no love in the future, they could part peacefully.
But on the very first day of marriage, Sheng Lan gave her a painful surprise.
So much for being clean.
She was just good at pretending.
She hurt her, then brought her to the hospital for treatment.
What kind of person would do something like that?
Lu Xueyin spoke softly into the phone.
“Come pick me up. I want to go home.”
