- Chapter 3 - Adorable Rose
Jiang Ling finally regained her composure. From the hoarse and fragile voice on the other end of the call, she picked up on Lu Xueyin’s coldness and restrained anger.
So, this newlywed couple hadn’t ended up in the hospital because of an overly passionate first marking due to inexperience.
There was something deeper going on.
The fact that Lu Xueyin reached out to her at this moment proved she still trusted her.
Jiang Ling confirmed the hospital address and room number with her. She asked if their visit had been discreet, whether there were any paparazzi around, or if fans might have snuck inside.
Lu Xueyin wasn’t sure.
When she left that house, her mind was still foggy. It wasn’t until she got in the car and was given a suppressant that her senses began to return. By then, she was already wearing a mask.
“I think it’s fine. Sheng Lan looked pretty calm.”
That ended the call.
Sheng Lan stood near the foot of the hospital bed, close to Lu Xueyin.
She had been watching her this whole time, looking at her pale and exhausted face reflected in the window.
Lu Xueyin was clearly unsteady. Sheng Lan had come closer to prevent her from collapsing.
Their eyes met in the reflection, and Sheng Lan gave her a gentle smile.
“Ready for the injection? Doctor Meng is about to finish her shift.”
Technically, Meng Chan wasn’t needed to administer the shot. But because the situation had dragged on and both patients were public figures, the nurses had been asked to leave the room for now.
Lu Xueyin nodded slightly and hung up the phone. She moved slowly toward the bed, one step at a time, as if she might faint at any moment.
Her entire posture showed how fragile she was.
As she came closer, Sheng Lan could see the faint blue veins beneath her skin.
She looked like a porcelain doll, delicately crafted, beautiful and breakable, stirring an instinctive urge to protect.
Maybe it was because she had just reconnected with someone she trusted. Maybe it was just her way of pretending to be strong while feeling completely vulnerable.
Instead of walking around to the head of the bed, Lu Xueyin approached from the foot. She passed right by Sheng Lan before sitting down.
The sleeve of her hospital gown brushed against Sheng Lan’s hand.
That was the same hand that had just finished an IV drip. The tape had already been peeled off, and the tiny needle wound had begun to scab over, leaving a small red dot.
At that moment, it started to itch.
Sheng Lan scratched it without thinking. It bled slightly, leaving a faint red mark on her fingertip.
The warmth in the air reminded her of roses blooming in May.
When she looked at the bl00d, it resembled a rose petal.
She turned around.
Lu Xueyin was already seated on the bed, facing her.
Her lips looked even more dry.
Oddly enough, she hadn’t developed any peeling, which felt like something only the heroine of a story could manage.
Sheng Lan’s own throat was dry.
She was a practical person. When thirsty, she drank.
She poured herself a glass of water and poured one for Lu Xueyin as well.
But Lu Xueyin didn’t take the glass from her. Instead, she looked at Meng Chan and said politely, “Could I trouble Doctor Meng to get me some water?”
Meng Chan had no intention of getting involved in their tension. She simply placed the glass Sheng Lan had poured on the bedside table.
Sheng Lan nearly laughed.
Lu Xueyin gave her a sharp look, as if ready to stab her with her eyes. Sheng Lan raised her hands in mock surrender.
“Go ahead and eat. I’m going to speak with Doctor Meng.”
She wanted to ask more details about Lu Xueyin’s physical condition.
But Lu Xueyin didn’t want them to step away. “I have a right to know about my own health.”
Since she insisted, Sheng Lan asked Yu Cheng to give them some space.
Yu Cheng looked at her like she had been betrayed, then left the room with her takeout.
As soon as the door closed, Sheng Lan pulled up a chair beside the bed and got to the point.
“What’s the chance she’s developing pheromone imbalance disorder?”
Lu Xueyin had good manners. She ate slowly and gracefully. Her hair was loosely tied back with a band, with a few strands falling over her forehead. She casually tucked them behind her ear.
She didn’t look at them and didn’t show any surprise or emotion.
Only the tight grip on her spoon revealed her tension. Her knuckles had turned white from how hard she was holding it.
Meng Chan noticed that her emotional state was stable and answered, “We’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s test results. Her pheromones are still unstable.”
The tests scheduled for the morning were specifically to check for signs of imbalance.
Sheng Lan asked about other symptoms she had read about in the original novel.
Drowsiness, sensitivity, irritability those were common.
Less often, patients experienced fevers or digestive issues. Some even required being marked to find relief.
At that, Lu Xueyin could no longer pretend to stay calm.
The way Sheng Lan asked sounded concerned, as if she had thoroughly researched the illness and was trying to understand it for Lu Xueyin’s sake.
But to Lu Xueyin, it felt like she was being set up.
It felt as if Sheng Lan wanted her to have these symptoms, and had staged this entire situation to make it happen on their wedding night.
She let out a soft, bitter laugh and put down her spoon.
The body rarely cooperates with the mind.
She didn’t want to eat anything given by Sheng Lan, but her stomach growled loudly in the quiet room.
The sound echoed painfully, making her face flush with shame.
The heat in her chest drained what little energy she had left. She leaned against the pillow, and even her bones seemed to send out signals of weakness.
She was breathing through parted lips, trying to catch her breath.
Sheng Lan sat down at the edge of the bed and picked up the bowl.
She began to feed her the porridge.
When the body is truly exhausted, resistance becomes useless. It’s just an argument with oneself.
In the end, Lu Xueyin ate everything quietly.
The conversation had reached its limit. Meng Chan gave a direct answer.
“All of the above complications are possible. Tonight’s medication must be completed. These are to suppress the effects of the inducer. After the tests, more prescriptions will be needed. Even if nothing turns up, she still has to take medication to flush the inducer out completely.”
She sent a message. Soon after, a nurse arrived with a printed waiver form.
“If she wants to be discharged, she needs to sign this. If anything happens afterward, I won’t be responsible.”
So when Jiang Ling arrived, she wasn’t able to take Lu Xueyin home.
Lu Xueyin told Sheng Lan to leave.
“I don’t need your fake kindness after the fact.”
She had thought Sheng Lan seemed decent. Bright and sunny, like a little sister.
But her actions were anything but clean.
Sheng Lan felt bitter and wronged.
She checked her phone. So far, only two things had gone smoothly: collecting evidence from the “toxic room” and retrieving Lu Xueyin’s phone.
They were still tracking the culprit.
No one had been caught yet, and Lu Xueyin was still furious.
Sheng Lan opened her mouth, ready to explain, but knew that no matter what she said, it would only sound like she was trying to pin the blame on someone else.
She was the one actually taking the fall.
She looked at Lu Xueyin.
“Get some rest. Let’s talk in the morning.”
Talk about divorce.
Lu Xueyin gave her a cold smile.
“Sure.”
So confident, with someone backing her up.
Adorable.
Sheng Lan’s room was right next door. Yu Cheng was already inside.
She had taken a shower, changed into a hospital gown for fun, and was posing for photos like a fashion shoot.
When she saw Sheng Lan walk in, she let out a dramatic cheer.
“My first time in a hospital.”
Then clarified.
“And it’s not even because I’m sick.”
So trendy.
Yu Cheng posted a photo collage online and insisted that Sheng Lan like, comment, and repost it.
“Payment for bringing your phone over tonight.”
Sheng Lan grabbed some clothes and headed for the bathroom.
“Reposting might be too much.”
Yu Cheng replied, “Then you owe me a comment with at least thirty characters.”
Sheng Lan agreed.
Inside the bathroom, she first gave the post a like.
Then, for the comment, she copied and pasted “Hope you’re doing okay” six times.
With her leading the way, the comments below Yu Cheng’s post quickly became unreadable.
Outside, Yu Cheng shouted her name at full volume.
“Are you insane?”
The room wasn’t soundproof. On the other side, Lu Xueyin, who had just closed her eyes to rest, was startled awake. Her heart skipped two beats.
Jiang Ling was furious.
“Seriously? Is this really the time to be fooling around?”
It was clear she didn’t take Lu Xueyin’s feelings seriously at all.
Lu Xueyin reached out and pressed the call button.
A nurse arrived and asked what was wrong. Lu Xueyin quietly complained that the room next door was too noisy.
The bathroom was close to the door, and Sheng Lan, as a top-level Alpha, had excellent senses.
Even over the sound of running water and through a closed door, she heard the nurse scolding Yu Cheng.
That little rose next door had filed the complaint.
Sheng Lan let out a soft laugh.
When she came out, Yu Cheng was curled up under the covers, pretending to be asleep.
The private room had been rearranged to fit two beds. Sheng Lan sat on the empty one and picked up her vibrating phone.
It was a message from Yu Cheng.
Yu Cheng: Did your wife just get jealous?
Yu Cheng: I thought about it carefully. Jealousy is the only thing that makes sense.
Otherwise, why would she complain?
Yu Cheng: Makes sense though. It’s your wedding night, and your wife sees you in my room. Of course she’s upset.
Sheng Lan was drying her hair and replied simply.
“She probably just thought you were too loud.”
She had spoken aloud, but Yu Cheng insisted on texting.
Yu Cheng: You really don’t understand Omegas. A lot of them have a strong sense of purity. They hate it when their Alpha has marked someone else. Now she has to share a room with you, and I’m here too. Her possessiveness kicked in.
Sheng Lan shook her head.
A bold theory.
Yu Cheng sat up, grabbed all her belongings, and got ready to change rooms.
“I didn’t expect two Alphas to need to avoid suspicion. You clearly didn’t think about it either. You saw me here and didn’t even blink.”
Sheng Lan didn’t think it mattered.
They were getting divorced in the morning anyway.
Besides, Jiang Ling was also in Lu Xueyin’s room. Surely that would be enough to stop her from adding this to Sheng Lan’s growing list of sins.
Still, Yu Cheng left.
Sheng Lan was too tired to think about anything else. She set her alarm, hoping she could be up in time to accompany Lu Xueyin for her tests in the morning, then closed her eyes and went to sleep.
If everything went smoothly, the tests would end just in time to discuss the divorce.
Goodbye, little rose.
