- Chapter 4 - Nothing but a Little Rose
At six thirty in the morning, Sheng Lan entered the hospital room with a nurse.
Lu Xueyin was woken up.
She was in poor condition. Because Jiang Ling was present, she managed to turn over and lie on her stomach, allowing the nurse to apply a testing patch to the back of her neck.
Her brief rest in the second half of the night had not helped her recover.
Her skin was unnaturally pale, and the black of the sampling patch stood out sharply against it.
A few strands of hair draped over her shoulder. A faint red mark was visible, left by the strap of her nightgown.
Was her skin really that thin?
Sheng Lan silently wondered, then turned to Jiang Ling and asked if she wanted to rest. Sheng Lan offered to watch over Lu Xueyin.
Jiang Ling declined and looked like she would rather Sheng Lan leave the room altogether.
That was unnecessary.
Sheng Lan leaned against the sofa and dozed off, ignoring her completely.
After thirty minutes, the patch was removed and dropped into a reagent. The resulting color showed that Lu Xueyin’s pheromone levels had returned to normal. That was when a technician came to draw her bl00d.
As soon as her sleeve was rolled up, Lu Xueyin suddenly woke with fear in her eyes, alert and on edge.
That look struck something in Sheng Lan’s chest.
She immediately looked away and moved to sit in a corner where Lu Xueyin could not see her.
After the bl00d draw, Lu Xueyin remained tired and did not try to go back to sleep.
When Jiang Ling helped her freshen up, the food Sheng Lan had ordered also arrived.
Since she had already been fed by someone the night before, Lu Xueyin made no fuss today. She drank some warm water and sat up in bed, carefully eating her porridge with a spoon.
Jiang Ling, while eating the same food Sheng Lan had ordered, still made a sarcastic remark.
“You nearly killed her, and now you show up playing the hero. I’ve really seen everything now.”
Sheng Lan looked up. She removed her pink-colored contact lenses, worn to match her hair. Without them, the lighthearted charm in her eyes faded. What remained was the calm intensity and pressure unique to a high-level Alpha.
Her voice was cool and blunt.
“You’re eating the food. Can’t you say something nice?”
Jiang Ling sneered.
“If you want nice words, try doing something decent first.”
Sheng Lan shrugged.
She had no intention of arguing.
Throughout breakfast, Lu Xueyin stayed very quiet.
Her silence weighed on the room.
Sheng Lan called her softly.
“What are you thinking about?”
The sound of her voice pulled Lu Xueyin out of her thoughts.
Their eyes met.
Sheng Lan noticed the red veins in her eyes and how striking her eyelashes were. They were long and straight, not too curled, giving her a naturally cool appearance.
Sheng Lan’s fingertips itched. She absentmindedly rubbed the tassel on a pillow.
Lu Xueyin told Jiang Ling to step out.
“I have something to say to Sheng Lan.”
Jiang Ling hesitated, clearly unwilling to leave them alone.
Right now, she treated Sheng Lan like a potential threat.
Lu Xueyin gave a faint laugh.
“Relax. She’s a fake Alpha. She won’t mark me.”
Sheng Lan’s fingers paused for a second.
She remembered the moment last night when that same line was spoken. She blinked.
So when Lu Xueyin asked her to mark her, she had been fully aware?
Lu Xueyin was completely calm as she looked at Sheng Lan and asked again if it was true.
Sheng Lan nodded without hesitation.
“Yes. I’m a fake Alpha. I don’t mark.”
Whatever Lu Xueyin said about her, she would accept it.
Lu Xueyin’s words didn’t define her.
She would live as she pleased.
Jiang Ling’s expression shifted from shock to suspicion, then to sympathy, and finally to understanding.
No wonder Sheng Lan had never been involved in any romantic rumors. Now it made sense.
If Sheng Lan could not mark anyone, Jiang Ling felt much more comfortable leaving her alone with Lu Xueyin.
Inside the hospital room, the newlywed wives looked at each other again.
Lu Xueyin asked if Sheng Lan wanted a divorce. Before Sheng Lan could speak, she continued with a cold tone and emphasized the accusation.
“Did you do all of this just to get a divorce?”
That question landed like a blow.
Sheng Lan would not take the blame for something she didn’t do.
Lu Xueyin was much calmer than the night before. Her mind was clear now, and she was able to hold a proper conversation.
“I never asked you to come over. I’ve never even stayed in that house. After I bought it, I never stepped inside. The police have been contacted, and they may need you to give a statement later.”
Lu Xueyin was thrown off by the explanation.
She blinked, but quickly regained composure and continued as if nothing had happened.
“Your friend was the one who invited me.”
Sheng Lan nodded.
“Yes. It wasn’t me.”
Lu Xueyin showed her the call history.
Sheng Lan took the phone and called the number listed under her name. It was already powered off.
Then she used her own phone to call Lu Xueyin’s number. On her screen, it appeared as a long, generic number that looked like a scam call.
Lu Xueyin took her phone back. Without saying whether she believed it or not, she calmly said that a divorce was not going to happen.
Sheng Lan leaned back and looked at her.
They sat at different heights. Lu Xueyin leaned against the headboard, keeping her distance. Her posture was proud, though the fatigue on her face dulled her sharpness. Her voice was still hoarse, which softened the edge of her words.
Her reasoning was simple.
The marriage had been arranged by her family. If she could have refused, there would have been no need for the license in the first place.
Sheng Lan had been threatened with being kicked out of the entertainment industry.
Lu Xueyin’s situation was different.
Her mother had cancer. The marriage had been her dying wish.
Not only could they not divorce now, but what happened last night had to be covered up.
If necessary, they would even have to act like they were in love.
Sheng Lan looked up at the ceiling, exasperated.
So that was why Lu Xueyin never mentioned divorce yesterday.
She almost wanted to say it like a sales pitch. “Here is your one and only chance to escape from your toxic Alpha. Don’t miss it.”
Instead, she tried to compromise.
“How about we quietly file the divorce papers in secret?”
Lu Xueyin responded with a flawless professional smile.
Sheng Lan lowered her gaze and thought back to the original novel.
In the book, Lu Xueyin endured long-term abuse from the toxic Alpha. She had been hospitalized multiple times, yet never asked for a divorce during any of it.
It wasn’t until the Alpha removed her gland that she finally broke.
A single forced marking wasn’t as traumatic as that, but an entire year of domestic violence, constant humiliation, and a ruined career was far more than most people could tolerate.
Lu Xueyin was a grown woman. When she agreed to go to the villa, she must have known there was a chance something would happen.
And she hadn’t resisted.
Sheng Lan thought back to how Lu Xueyin treated her yesterday.
She did not want multiple people to mark her.
But she was willing to be marked by Sheng Lan.
Sheng Lan felt a wave of silence wash over her.
She looked up at Lu Xueyin, and her chest tightened.
Even though she had absorbed the plot of the original novel, she still couldn’t fully believe that she was supposed to be the “toxic Alpha.” Her personality was far too different from the character in the book.
But if she didn’t want to become cannon fodder, she had to shake off that label.
The fastest way to do that was to stay far away from the original storyline.
And the best way to distance herself was to get divorced.
But when she saw Lu Xueyin’s pale face and the forced calm she was holding onto just to have this conversation, she couldn’t bring herself to push for it. Knowing what kind of fate Lu Xueyin would suffer in the original story made her heart soften.
She stayed quiet.
While the two of them sat in this stalemate, Meng Chan arrived for work.
She brought the test results, and Jiang Ling entered with her.
Meng Chan never liked wasting time. She was direct and to the point.
Once she confirmed both Lu Xueyin and Sheng Lan were ready to hear it, she said plainly, “She does not have pheromone imbalance disorder.”
Just as everyone began to show relief, Meng Chan’s tone shifted.
“But she still needs to take medication to flush out the remaining inducers. She also needs to limit her use of suppressants and continue injections for three more days. In a week, she has to come back for a follow-up. We’ll check the remaining inducer levels then and reduce the medication accordingly.”
If she failed to follow these instructions, the condition could easily return.
Not having the disorder was the best possible news. Everything else could be endured.
Lu Xueyin asked to be discharged again. Meng Chan handed her the waiver form. If she signed, she could leave.
But since she was married, her partner also had to sign.
Sheng Lan hesitated. She didn’t want to sign.
“Stay one more day. You look like you could faint at any minute.”
Lu Xueyin was clearly resistant.
“Just sign it. I can’t sleep here anyway.”
Sheng Lan picked up the pen, ready to give in.
Her thoughts drifted in another direction.
Married people had to go through this much trouble just to leave the hospital.
Maybe if she explained all the hassle of marriage to Lu Xueyin, she would want a divorce even more.
That idea was shameful.
Using someone’s illness to gain leverage was exactly what a toxic Alpha would do.
Sheng Lan, you’ve lost it.
Your thoughts have been poisoned by the role.
Still, she quickly signed the form.
Even under the title of Lu Xueyin’s wife, she had to get things done.
After finishing the discharge process, Sheng Lan arranged the transportation. She even assured them that a PR team was handling everything. There would be no negative trending searches for the next couple of days.
She was considerate enough not to ride in the car with them.
After placing the newly prepared medical kit inside, she exchanged contact information with Jiang Ling and told Lu Xueyin to save her number.
Before closing the door, she gave one last reminder.
“Someone from the police will contact you for a statement.”
Then she gently shut the door.
Once she stepped outside the hospital and out of range of the scent blockers and neutralizers, Lu Xueyin’s rose-like pheromones began to drift toward her again.
As the car door closed, it was as if the pheromones were stirred by the movement, rushing out with the wind and surging in Sheng Lan’s direction.
It was a warm, clear fragrance. Rich and soft. The kind of scent that naturally made people lower their guard.
Sheng Lan reached into her pocket, took out a portable suppressant spray, closed her eyes, and used it without hesitation.
Just some pheromones.
Just a little rose.
Nothing to be afraid of.
Once she got in her own car and had driven a while, she suddenly felt like she had forgotten something.
She tilted her head, trying to remember. But since nothing came to mind, she figured it couldn’t be important.
Might as well go home and catch up on sleep.
Back in the hospital.
Meng Chan knocked on Yu Cheng’s door.
“Time for rounds.”
