- Episode 21 - Let's go on a date next time
May 24 (Tuesday)
This is what it means to be a different group.
In the classroom, she always talks to someone in the group, and of course when they move to a different classroom, and even at lunch break, they are in the same group. Still, at the exact moment when the group members left Mizuhara Shizuku, Wakamatsu Kaede called out to her.
“Good morning, Mizuhara.”
“Wakamatsu, that’s rare.”
The smile she had been giving her friend earlier disappeared, and Mizuhara Shizuku reverted to her usual matter-of-fact way of speaking.
For some reason, Wakamatsu found this amusing, and with a smile on his face, he put his face close to his classmate’s ear.
“Would you like to eat lunch with me?”
After a moment of silence, Mizuhara replied, “I think it’ll work.”
Mizuhara urged Wakamatsu to hurry back, so Wakamatsu obediently returned to his seat.
I would look at the clock on my desk, wishing lunchtime would come soon, and get annoyed when I saw that the minute hand wasn’t moving.
As soon as the doorbell rang, I told my friend, “I’m not going to eat anything else today,” and got up from my seat, picking up my mother’s lunch.
“Hey,” I said as I headed over to where Mizuhara was sitting, and Itohara-san and Noguchi-san, who were standing nearby, turned around with shocked looks on their faces. “I’m off then,” Mizuhara told her friends and headed out into the hallway. Wakamatsu, who had assumed she would be eating in the classroom, was surprised but followed her.
“I’m so sorry to give you such a shock, were you in the middle of a conversation?”
“Well, Wakamatsu, you might not understand this, but you’ll inevitably be scared if the top players from your class suddenly show up here, right?”
“I-Ichi…? What?”
With a sigh, my classmate ended the conversation, saying, “That’s enough.”
“Aren’t you going to eat in the classroom?”
“…Did you hear what I said earlier?”
Mizuhara Shizuku continued walking in a daze, descending the stairs and coming out into the courtyard.
Even though it was April, it was cloudy and chilly today, and there were very few students eating lunch in the courtyard. The two of them sat facing each other at a random table.
Wakamatsu has bento boxes, and Mizuhara has sandwiches you can find at convenience stores.
“Let’s get changed together for PE in the fourth period. Want to pair up for calisthenics?”
“I’d like to go, but it might not be possible.”
“It’s fine if you come with your friends from Mizuhara. Is that still not possible?”
“Wakamatsu is fine, but that place is not so good.”
“Tch,” he said, sulking as he stuffed his face with the meatballs in his lunch. Even though they were in the same school and the same classroom, he had no real connection with Mizuhara Shizuku.
“Wakamatsu, you treat me and other people the same way.”
“Hmm? Maybe so.”
Next, he replies while stuffing his face with a cherry tomato.
“Treat me more like a lover.”
Mizuhara Shizuku has imposed an impossible demand on me.
“Why are you being so spoiled?”
When I looked up to laugh at the joke, I saw Mizuhara with a complicated look on his face.
The face resembled the one Mizuhara often saw when she was not attending school. It was clear that the “unusual” she was facing had not yet ended.
“Oh! Then let’s go on a date sometime.”
Something lovers do is go on a date.
“Friday after school?”
“Let’s just go on the weekend, to the movies or the aquarium or somewhere like that!”
Although he had a history of turning down many invitations, Mizuhara Shizuku unusually accepted.
Where to go, what to do, what to eat… As we discussed these things, I had a thought in the back of my mind that we were just like a couple.
No, we are dating and we are a couple.
“Please escort me, you’re my lover after all.”
“fart?”
Mizuhara speaks like a spoiled young lady.
“What’s an escort?”
“Plan it and guide me smartly.”
“Oh, I see. That’s fine.”
“It’s okay. Wakamatsu is a nice guy.”
I have classes next Saturday, and my schedule is already full with plans to go out with friends. This date is probably a few weeks away, but I want to come up with a plan that will excite me and satisfy Mizuhara.
“Do you need to plan everything?”
“…As long as it’s not a burden.”
“Is this a burden to anyone?”
For Wakamatsu, planning fun activities isn’t much of a pain.
Just thinking about where to go, what to do, and what to eat adds to the fun, so it’s a great deal.
“It would be a burden to most people…”
“Eh, why?”
“Because you care.”
The classmate across from me replied with a shocked look on his face.
“What if I make a mistake in choosing the store? What if it’s different from what I expected?”
“Hahaha, just laugh it off.”
Anyway, the most important thing is what to do first. It would be even better if it were a romantic event, something special, and something that would leave a lasting impression. As I thought about the things on my “to-do list,” one after another in my head, I suddenly started looking forward to the date.
“Wow, I’m looking forward to it!”
“Really? I’m glad then.”
Such an exciting heart.
Wakamatsu Kaede thought it would be nice if Mizuhara Shizuku could share this, too.
