- Episode 9 - Do you want attention?
Friday, February 4
“Please”
We were invited to Mizuhara’s room.
It was an especially cold day today, and I entered the room shivering profusely.
A folding table has already been set up, and cushions have been prepared.
“What should we do? What would be good to do together?”
“Please don’t use memorization.”
Mizuhara says he likes to do memorization subjects alone in a quiet place. He decides to do math because he can help others, and takes out a chart-style problem book. Wakamatsu only uses charts before a test, but Mizuhara seems to have already started on some of the problems.
Whenever his hand stops, he asks Mizuhara a question.
Even though Mizuhara is the one who hasn’t been going to school, the study group comes to a close with him asking most of the questions. Since Mizuhara has been answering Wakamatsu’s questions, she becomes worried that her studies haven’t progressed.
“Sorry, I was the only one listening.”
“Don’t worry, teaching is also a learning experience.”
If you want Suwon, that’s fine.
“See you next week,” Wakamatsu Kaede said, leaving Mizuhara’s room with a smile.
Friday, February 11
In response to Mizuhara’s request to sit by the window, I sat next to her at the counter facing the window. I turned to her to say something, but she just looked outside without paying any attention to me. I placed my order slip on the table and waited for my order to be brought out.
“Mizuhara is like a cat.”
“Haha, that might be rude to the cat.”
A noble cat that won’t let you touch it easily, even though you want to.
“Wakamatsu feels like a big dog.”
“Eh! Ah, call me by my first name!”
Mizuhara was no longer referred to as “san.” The shock of that moment instantly blew all thoughts of dogs and cats out of Wakamatsu’s head.
“What? Did you like Hanakaede-chan?”
“N-no! Please call me Wakamatsu.”
If Mizuhara called me “Hana Kaede-chan,” I’d feel so awkward I wouldn’t be able to have a conversation. Besides, I’m not the type of person who would be called “chan” because I’m not classified as a girly person.
“Hey, what have you been looking at for a while now?”
“Outside”
“Are you observing something? Is it interesting?”
“That’s not funny,” she replied. If you don’t find it funny, just look at this.
“Tch,” Wakamatsu said, looking deliberately sulky as he looked outside. He watched the people going by for a while, but didn’t notice anything in particular. Thinking that it was boring after all, he turned towards Mizuhara, only to find her face right next to him.
“Whoa!”
“What, do you want some attention?”
Mizuhara looked at me with a triumphant look on his face.
I fell for the trick and let out a silly noise. This classmate was intentionally toying with me.
“Hey Wakamatsu, it’s turning red here.”
“Ah, ah, this. This is what the iron is touching.”
“Wow, it does look like a love bite.”
He gently traces the back of my neck with the pads of his fingers.
Perhaps because he was touching a sensitive spot, Wakamatsu’s body twitched in reaction even to such a subtle stimulation.
Wakamatsu pretends to be calm and takes a sip of the vanilla shake that is brought to him.
“Mizuhara, can we meet on any day other than Friday?”
“We can’t meet.”
Mizuhara easily dodges Wakamatsu’s words.
“This is what I like.”
“What do you mean?”
“Once a week for a few hours.”
Taking a break after drinking his matcha au lait, Mizuhara looks out the window.
“I love this special time.”
What is there ahead of his gaze?
What do her eyes reflect?
To Wakamatsu, everything was unclear.
