- Chapter 14 - “I’m Not Scared.”
To Yu Wanyin, meeting Qiao Sanghe felt like the luckiest thing that had ever happened to her. The weight she had carried for so many years, the constant dread over her sister’s illness, was finally lifted. Xiaoya’s surgery had gone smoothly—all thanks to Qiao Sanghe’s support.
Wrapped in her soft, sweet embrace, Yu Wanyin couldn’t help but reflect on the past. Back then, every cent was hard-earned; she had to juggle countless jobs just to barely scrape together enough for medical bills.
Even after selling the house their parents had left them, life remained incredibly difficult.
Only when you’ve lived in true poverty do you realize how hard mere survival can be. Back then, she and Xiaoya weren’t really living—they were barely existing. No matter how many jobs she took, how drained she became, it was never enough to improve their quality of life.
Surviving and living well are worlds apart. For people at the bottom, poverty is a chasm that feels impossible to cross. And having experienced that suffering, Yu Wanyin now understood how precious her current happiness was.
Just the medical care alone was a world of difference. Xiaoya now had a private VIP hospital suite, with a dedicated nurse, doctor, and 24/7 caregivers to assist with every need. Her meals were highly nutritious, tailored for leukemia patients, and her treatments were both effective and comforting. The medicine bills were no longer crushing them. Compared to how they used to live, this was almost surreal.
Yu Wanyin could see her sister getting better every day. The transplant surgery was successful, and as long as there was no rejection, Xiaoya could go back to living like a normal person—return to school, make friends, and enjoy life like every other teenager. It all felt like a dream.
She tightened her arms around Qiao Sanghe, nuzzling closer to her as she whispered softly:
“Qiao Sanghe… thank you. Truly. If it wasn’t for you, her condition would’ve only worsened. She might not even be alive. You helped us escape hell, helped her escape that endless pain. I swear I’ll work hard, and
I’ll repay your kindness with everything I have.”
Qiao Sanghe still hadn’t quite processed the kiss from earlier, and now hearing such sincere words made her smile. Sometimes, Yu Wanyin was just so adorably earnest. Her lack of calculation made it hard not to feel guilty around her.
“Then I’ll be watching. It’s not enough to just say the words—you’ll have to prove it with action,” Qiao Sanghe replied.
“I will. I’ll work twice as hard.”
A week passed in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, Xiaoya’s recovery was going exceptionally well. No signs of rejection appeared, and all her vital indicators were improving. Even her spirits were lifting. The doctors were optimistic—if things continued like this, she could be discharged soon.
Yu Wanyin finally allowed herself to relax.
Meanwhile, a new episode of Midnight Fairytale was about to be recorded.
The previous episode had been a huge hit online. Viewers flooded social media with comments about the guests’ performance in the escape room, especially praising Yu Wanyin and Qiao Sanghe. Though some still joked they didn’t look like a couple, the chemistry and flawless teamwork between them won over a massive fanbase.
As soon as the new episode aired, a swarm of viewers flooded into their livestream.
【Finally, it’s airing again! I missed Qiao Qiao and Yin Yin so much.】
【It’s so weird—they just vanish whenever they’re not filming.】
【Even the trending topics from the last episode didn’t last long.】
【They’re both so popular, it’s odd that there’s zero news about them.】
【I just wanna watch them play escape rooms all day. They’re too entertaining.】
【They’re the most mysterious couple in the whole industry. Even the top paparazzi can’t dig up anything.】
Truthfully, both Yu Wanyin and Qiao Sanghe kept a very low profile, deliberately avoiding media exposure. Too much attention would intrude on their real lives, and neither of them wanted to show their rawest selves to the public.
After all, not everything beautiful on the outside is as good on the inside.
Qiao Sanghe knew herself well—there was no way she would let the public see her unfiltered. Work and personal life had to remain separate. She also wanted to protect Yu Wanyin’s privacy and peace of mind.
The theme of this episode was an eerie, Chinese-style wedding escape room: The Ghost Bride. Set on the 10th floor of the usual escape venue, it was designed to be both creepy and immersive.
The moment the livestream started, viewers watched as Qiao Sanghe and Yu Wanyin made their way down a shadowy corridor, finally unlocking the door to the 10th floor. A crimson light bled through the doorway, mist curling in the air around them, casting everything in a ghostly glow.
Even through the screen, the atmosphere was unsettling. Many viewers instinctively held their breath.
Qiao Sanghe reached out for Yu Wanyin’s hand—something she often did when things got unnerving. Feeling Yu Wanyin’s warmth always brought her a strange sense of calm.
Of course, she’d never admit she was scared. At most, she would say she didn’t like uncertainty.
But this time, her hand grabbed at empty air.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Then, just as suddenly, that familiar warmth wrapped around her hand again. The sense of relief was immediate, as if a small piece of her had returned.
Yu Wanyin’s soft voice whispered beside her ear:
“Don’t be scared.”
“I’m not scared,” Qiao Sanghe huffed, but her grip only tightened.
Yu Wanyin chuckled softly, saying nothing more. Instead, she pulled Qiao Sanghe gently into her arms, closing the distance between them. Their bodies pressed close, sharing warmth, easing away the unease.
【LOL, classic Qiao Qiao—so stubborn!】
【Queen of denial, Qiao Sanghe.】
【I’m dying. She always says she’s not scared, but clings like a baby.】
【Honestly, Yu Wanyin’s presence is so calming. They’re too cute together.】
