- Chapter 4 - A Qualified Couple
Yu Wanyin’s pupils contracted sharply—she hadn’t expected such a request. Her body tensed, heart racing like she’d just been startled, completely caught off guard.
After a long pause, she finally said, “Boss, isn’t that… inappropriate?”
Qiao Sanghe glanced at her. “Then clean it off.”
Yu Wanyin, nerves taut, picked up a clean tissue and began gently dabbing the coffee stain from Qiao Sanghe’s skin. As she leaned in, she caught a faint whiff of vanilla cake—sweet and soft.
But this sweetness was at odds with Qiao Sanghe’s sharp and dangerous aura. Being near her made Yu Wanyin’s heartbeat speed up. Her guarded and unpredictable personality only made things worse. Yu Wanyin dared not apply pressure even with her hand movements, careful in every action.
Watching her delicate, hesitant manner, Qiao Sanghe blinked and asked casually, “You look nervous around me. Am I really that scary? Or… do you resent the way I treat you?”
Yu Wanyin kept her head down and answered earnestly, “No. I’m the one at fault. I’ll do better next time.”
She desperately needed this job. No matter how hard or demanding it was, she would push through. If her employer was dissatisfied, then she must be the one who hadn’t done well enough.
Qiao Sanghe said flatly, “At least you’re honest about your mistakes. Just be more serious next time. I’ll let it slide today.”
“Thank you.”
Yu Wanyin exhaled in relief. At least Qiao Sanghe wasn’t being overly difficult this time.
Once she finished cleaning the stain, she quietly stepped away, missing the meaningful look in Qiao Sanghe’s eyes as she left.
That first-day incident left a lasting impression on Yu Wanyin. From then on, for the next two weeks, she was extra cautious—even when brewing coffee. She meticulously followed every instruction, determined to avoid any errors.
Despite her boss being eccentric and strict, the job wasn’t physically exhausting. In fact, it was easier than many of her past roles.
Her sister was receiving proper care in the hospital, with professional nursing help, and her condition had stabilized. Things were finally looking up.
Working as Qiao Sanghe’s assistant came with a high salary and generous benefits. With her sister’s treatment also supported, Yu Wanyin was truly grateful and willing to do whatever it took to keep this job.
Soon, the two-week probation period ended. Qiao Sanghe handed her a new contract.
“Your performance has been acceptable,” she said. “You meet my standards. If you’re willing to accept this new agreement, then your trial period is officially over, and you’ll have a new role.”
Yu Wanyin’s expression lit up. Just being recognized for her hard work was enough. She’d been anxious the whole time, terrified of failing. But now, she finally relaxed.
She picked up the contract and carefully read it—only to realize it wasn’t a standard employment agreement, but a variety show partnership contract.
It stated that Party A, Qiao Sanghe, was hiring Party B, Yu Wanyin, as her on-screen CP partner for a reality show involving commercial endorsements and promotional events. Yu Wanyin would need to cooperate in building a romantic “couple” image, obey all directives, and not deny or damage the CP relationship during the contract period. If she caused harm to Qiao Sanghe’s image or failed to uphold the illusion, the contract would be terminated, and she would owe double the penalty fee.
However, if she succeeded for the two-year term, she will receive 20 million yuan—and could request partial advances in installments.
At first, Yu Wanyin was tense reading the harsh terms. But when she saw the figure at the bottom—20 million yuan—her eyes widened in disbelief. That kind of money could save her sister’s life. It was like Qiao
Sanghe had pinpointed her exact weakness and struck.
Suddenly, everything made sense. The assistant job had been a ruse; the trial period merely an audition. What Qiao Sanghe really needed wasn’t an assistant, but someone who could play a “tolerant, capable, high-pressure CP partner” in front of cameras.
She had no idea why she had been chosen, but with so much at stake, how could she refuse?
“I agree,” Yu Wanyin said softly. “But… would it be possible to request an advance? I—I really need the money right now.”
Qiao Sanghe reclined lazily and said, “You can speak to Sister Han. She’ll arrange it. But just know that advance comes with conditions. If I’m not satisfied with your performance, I can demand full repayment at any time. You need to understand the nature of this show, your responsibilities, and what being a ‘qualified couple’ entails. You’re no longer my subordinate—you’re my partner. If you stay this nervous around me,
I won’t be pleased.”
“I understand,” Yu Wanyin nodded. “I’ll give it my best. Please trust me.”
“Good. And drop the ‘boss’ thing. From now on, call me Qiao Qiao.”
Yu Wanyin hadn’t expected her simple job hunt to land her in something like this. The past two weeks weren’t a trial—they were a compatibility test. Qiao Sanghe had been looking for someone who could survive her temperament.
“I understand… Qiao Qiao,” she said softly.
The show they were filming was a horror-themed escape room variety show called Midnight Fairytale. All the cast members were couples, and due to its intense atmosphere and frightening scenes, it heavily tested emotional coordination and chemistry.
Many celebrity couples had gained immense popularity after appearing on the show. Some C-list stars had skyrocketed to A-list just by showing believable affection and team spirit on screen.
Yu Wanyin’s role was to help Qiao Sanghe create a viral CP image, boost her popularity, and maintain the illusion throughout the show. She had no experience with this kind of performance but was determined to learn.
With the promise of an advance of 1 million yuan, the job no longer seemed so daunting. That kind of money could pay for her sister’s bone marrow transplant and possibly cure her leukemia. The match had already been found long ago, but they had never had the funds to proceed—until now.
The show was scheduled to begin filming in two weeks.
During that time, Yu Wanyin immersed herself in studying past CP dynamics on the show, analyzing what made the “hot couples” stand out. She observed their physical interactions, emotional timing, and communication styles.
To overcome her own nervousness around Qiao Sanghe, she kept reminding herself how beautiful and gentle she could be. But the more she thought about it, the more Qiao Sanghe reminded her of that mysterious, unforgettable woman she had a fleeting one-night encounter with.
If Qiao Sanghe’s dangerously sharp edge was stripped away… she almost seemed like her. But the memory was blurry and chaotic, and she couldn’t be sure. Still, something about her felt familiar.
The recording location for Midnight Fairytale was an old, European-style hotel, isolated in a remote area, surrounded by wilderness with no nearby businesses or residences. The desolation added to the eerie vibe.
Their grand debut on set marked their official live-stream entrance into the show.
While Qiao Sanghe wasn’t hugely famous, she often drew buzz. What shocked fans the most was the sudden appearance of a “girlfriend.” Qiao Sanghe had always been publicly single—so who was this Yu Wanyin, and where had she come from?
Yu Wanyin trailed behind Qiao Sanghe, seemingly lost in thought.
What Qiao Sanghe wanted in a partner was someone who could walk beside her as an equal, not someone timidly lagging behind. A passive presence wouldn’t generate the chemistry they needed.
But just as she was starting to feel disappointed…
Yu Wanyin suddenly stepped forward, grasped her hand, and nuzzled her own cheek against it. Then, with a soft kiss to the back of Qiao Sanghe’s hand, she smiled and said sweetly:
“Darling, you’re walking too fast. Wait for me.”
Qiao Sanghe: “…”
