- Chapter 6 - Maybe Just a Little Nervous
Caught off guard, Yu Wanyin accidentally brushed her lips against Qiao Sanghe’s thigh. The soft, delicate sensation made her heart skip a beat and her body tense involuntarily. Kneeling between Qiao Sanghe’s legs in such a compromising position only made it feel more suggestive. From this distance, she could even catch a faint whiff of the other woman’s scent. A blush bloomed across her ears like wildfire. The kiss had been too sudden, too close—her body reacted instinctively, trembling slightly with excitement.
Yu Wanyin had never thought she could get nervous like this in front of someone. Now, all she could do was carefully apply the band-aid. Anything more? She wouldn’t dare.
Qiao Sanghe noticed the subtle tremor in Yu Wanyin’s body and found it… amusing. Who would’ve thought she was so shy? It was always in these little unintentional moments that Qiao discovered more of her quirks. All in all, being around her wasn’t boring—actually, quite the opposite. Maybe choosing her as a partner for this variety show had been the right call after all.
After changing clothes, neither of them mentioned the awkward incident, though the atmosphere had clearly shifted—becoming just a little more complicated.
The production team had arranged for them to move into an abandoned school dormitory. The campus was laid out with interconnected buildings: dormitories, classrooms, and science labs. The entire setting had been transformed into a massive escape room. The rules were simple in theory—find a way to escape the school. But the process would be filled with various challenges and obstacles. If they failed, they will face penalties.
The detailed rulebook had already been sent to each participant’s phone. It was long, complex, and outlined all possible accidents they might encounter:
1. Class attendance is mandatory. If a teacher shows up to teach the wrong subject, leave immediately. Otherwise, something bad will happen.
2. The cafeteria menu is updated daily on the blackboard. If the food served doesn’t match the posted menu, do not eat it. Find food elsewhere.
3. After 11 PM, you must search for a key to reach the next level. You only have one hour. During this time, staff members in red clothing will appear. If they see you, you’ll lose “credibility points” and receive a punishment.
4. Accumulate credibility points through good performance to unlock additional clues. Scores are updated daily.
5. Punishments fall into two categories:
o You’ll lose a floor of progress and be sent back (e.g., from Floor 11 back to Floor 12).
o Or, if you have no credibility points left to deduct, you’ll be confined to a “detention room” for 12 hours.
After reading the rules, neither of them reacted strongly. Qiao Sanghe was emotionally reserved by nature, rarely showing much fluctuation in her mood. Yu Wanyin, on the other hand, was here to do her job. As Qiao’s assistant—and now fake girlfriend on the show—her top priority was to take care of her boss.
Because of her contract, Yu Wanyin read the rules extra carefully. She couldn’t let Qiao Sanghe get penalized over something as silly as missing a detail. Sure, the punishments weren’t serious—it was still a variety show—but as her “CP partner,” creating a positive experience for her boss was essential.
The show, titled Midnight Fairytale, was being streamed live 24/7. It had a stacked cast—rising stars and top-tier idol trainees from major entertainment agencies. But the show had a notorious past: many of its “couples” were fake, contract-based pairings. Most of them broke up after the show wrapped—if they ever dated at all. It was all about clout, fanbase growth, and selling merch later on.
Yu Wanyin and Qiao Sanghe were especially suspicious to viewers—no public rumors, no previous appearances together. Their relationship felt too sudden. It screamed “contract couple.”
【The only real couple here is Zhang Yuan and Chen Mingyan. The rest are all fake.】
【How did the show even cast such obviously fake CPs?】
【At least Bai Yu and Xia Yao look convincing. I caught them whispering earlier today.】
【No one believes in Yu and Qiao. If they don’t break up after this show ends, I’ll livestream a handstand.】
As the show kicked off, online speculation exploded. Viewers dissected every couple, comparing body language, whispered conversations, and subtle clues to determine who was real. Yu and Qiao’s sudden “relationship” stuck out—especially since Qiao had always maintained a single, aloof persona. Now she had a girlfriend? And no explanation whatsoever?
Most assumed Yu Wanyin was a last-minute fill-in to help Qiao Sanghe maintain appearances on the show. Unsurprisingly, their CP wasn’t very popular.
Back in their dorm room, the pair had a moment to breathe. Climbing twelve floors felt genuinely tiring—this set was impressively realistic, and it was clear the production team had poured a lot into the budget.
The immersion was intense.
After getting a feel for their surroundings, they followed the schedule to attend night study. They greeted a few other guests but didn’t make small talk. The session passed uneventfully—except for one thing.
A stranger, posing as a fellow student, approached them in class and asked to borrow a book.
Yu Wanyin hesitated. The rules hadn’t mentioned anything about lending books—this must be a player-driven choice that would affect the outcome.
She noticed the other participants refused to lend their books—maybe out of fear of triggering a penalty.
But what if it was a clue?
“Qiao Qiao, you decide,” she whispered. “Should we lend her the book?”
Qiao Sanghe looked bored. “Sure. Whatever.”
“Okay, then let’s give it to her.”
As long as Qiao didn’t object, Yu Wanyin stuck to what she believed was the right choice. The NPC wouldn’t appear for no reason, and since lending wasn’t forbidden, it might help them later.
“I’m exhausted. Let’s go back and rest—we still have to search for clues tonight.”
Back in the dorm, something unexpected happened:
Yu Wanyin started brewing coffee.
【Wait… is she seriously making coffee in the dorm?!】
【Are they even allowed to do that??】
【Well, technically the rules don’t prohibit it, but still… that’s fresh ground beans?!】
【Most people just make instant noodles in dorms, not gourmet coffee.】
【Are they here to film a variety show or open a café?!】
Yu Wanyin knew Qiao Sanghe had a habit of drinking coffee at night, so she brought a mini espresso setup in her backpack. Variety show or not, that routine wasn’t changing. Her technique was polished—she’d ground beans so many times she could do it blindfolded.
Qiao Sanghe was impressed. The rich aroma, the soothing ritual—she felt her fatigue begin to melt away. A good cup of coffee, brewed just right, could make anything feel bearable.
Yu Wanyin didn’t forget who she was, even while filming. That was one of her strengths. She didn’t get caught up in appearances or fame.
Her attention to detail was immaculate. She handed Qiao Sanghe a coffee cup with a napkin, coaster, stirring spoon, and even throat lozenges to follow up. These little gestures—though minor—made everything feel extra thoughtful.
【Yu Wanyin’s really good at taking care of people, huh?】
【Qiao Sanghe is high-maintenance. Look at that coffee ritual.】
【I’ve never seen such a sweet and considerate Alpha before. Total soft A vibes.】
At exactly 11 PM, they left the dorm to search for clues.
But the building was massive—connected to labs, classrooms, and the library. With no hints, it was nearly impossible to know where to start.
Then came the twist.
They weren’t allowed to turn on any lights. The hallways were pitch-black, lit only by the faint glow of their phones. The silence was deafening, and outside the window, crows cawed into the night. From the corner of her eye, Yu Wanyin spotted something—a bl00d-red figure standing at the bathroom door.
She froze.
Qiao Sanghe noticed the tension and followed her gaze. Sure enough—a “ghost” in red.
The rules clearly said they couldn’t be seen by anyone in red.
They both instinctively turned off their flashlights. Now the shadowy figure was even more prominent in the darkness.
To protect her, Yu Wanyin grabbed Qiao Sanghe’s hand, pulling her close as she guided them into a nearby changing room. Without hesitation, she yanked open a locker and hid them both inside. It was cramped—so tight that they had to cling to each other to fit.
Qiao Sanghe had been too stunned to react at first, but now realized she was being held. Their bodies pressed together, and suddenly—
Creak.
The bathroom door opened.
The figure had followed them in.
Qiao Sanghe’s heart raced. Maybe it was nerves, or maybe something else. She instinctively tightened her hold on Yu Wanyin, her slender body soft and warm in her arms. Without thinking, she gave her waist a light squeeze.
Yu Wanyin: “…”
