A Young Lady Who Has Had Everything Exploited By Her Sickly Younger Sister Will Not Let Anyone Take Anything From Her Anymore - Chapter 18
Colette remembered that before she got engaged to Dion, her father had tried to recommend Liliane as a fiancée for Prince William—but was turned down because of her poor health.
William currently had no fiancée, but his behavior was known to be poor. He was far from the perfect prince from fairy tales and not very popular among the noble ladies. Considering the Queen’s personality, it wasn’t surprising that no one wanted to marry into the royal family.
Still, the royal house had apparently approached one of Colette’s closest friends, the marquis’ daughter Alexia, as a possible candidate.
Alexia was a beautiful young lady and one of Colette’s dear friends. But she had always wished to marry her childhood sweetheart. Colette remembered now how she had wanted to help her, but being stuck in the Count of Milliact’s estate, she couldn’t do anything for Alexia at the time.
Meimei quickly brought out tea and snacks from the cart and placed them on the bedside table.
“Please eat. It will warm your body,” she said.
Colette tried to take the cup, but her hands were too weak. Seeing that, Meimei kindly held the cup out to her instead.
“Don’t push yourself,” Meimei added.
“Yes… thank you.”
“There’s no need to thank me. I’m just a servant,” Meimei replied calmly.
Her expression didn’t change at all as she efficiently took care of everything around Colette.
When Colette asked where she was, Meimei only replied, “I’m not allowed to say anything,” leaving her no choice but to stay quiet.
(Is this the Shaimei Empire? No, I didn’t walk that far. They’re being too kind for this to be slavery… Maybe I’ve been taken in as a courtesan?)
It would make sense if that were the case. Otherwise, there was no reason for her to be treated so well.
The fancy decor and the presence of servants suggested that the place might have been a high-class brothel.
(It might all be new and confusing, and I might cause some trouble at first… but I have to do whatever I can to repay the kindness they showed me!)
Determined, Colette looked at Meimei and asked,
“Is this place… a brothel?”
“…?!”
For the first time, Meimei’s expression twitched, and her eyebrows were slightly moving in surprise.
“I know I’m inexperienced, but I’ll do my very best,” Colette said seriously.
She had been prepared for this ever since she ran away from the Count’s estate. Nevertheless, her heart was pounding at the idea of actually beginning this type of work.
“You seem to be mistaken. This place is not a brothel,” Meimei said flatly.
“…What?”
“Lady Colette, please don’t overthink things right now. Just focus on eating something at your pace.”
“…Eating?”
“Yes. If the food doesn’t suit your taste, please let us know. If you need any assistance, simply press the bell located there.
Colette glanced at the bell where Meimei pointed.
“I’ll leave now so you can feel more at ease,” Meimei added, bowing deeply before quietly leaving the room.
(So… it’s not a brothel? But if they’re telling me to eat, does that mean I’m too thin to start working yet…?)
Colette looked around the room again. The furniture seemed a little old, but everything looked expensive.
Was the young man who saved her the owner of this house? He seemed too young for that…
Still, the warmth of his hand and his gentle smile lingered in her memory.
(He acted like he knew me. But why?)
Colette didn’t remember giving her name, and she was certain they’d never met in high society before.
