Chapter 19: Tearing Clothes
Gu Feiran and Jiang Lan supported Jiang Ci as they came out of the elevator.
The apartment building had one elevator for two units. Jiang Ci lived in the left one. Jiang Lan had been there several times before and led the way familiarly.
The door had a combination lock.
Jiang Lan freed one hand and skillfully entered the code, 554433. Ding, the password was incorrect.
“Wrong password?” Jiang Lan doubted herself, saying, “This is the password. It’s never wrong. No matter how many times Xiao Ci changes houses, she always uses this password. How could it be wrong?”
As she spoke, Jiang Lan entered 554422 again, but the door still didn’t open, indicating the password was wrong.
Did Xiao Ci change the password?
Jiang Lan had to steady Jiang Ci and turned to ask, “Xiao Ci, what’s your door password?”
Jiang Ci was drunk; she slurred, “Birthday, Little Aunt, I changed it to my birthday, plus 99. Little Aunt, I changed it months ago, and you didn’t know.”
“Birthday?”
Jiang Lan re-entered the password, 072299, but it still showed as incorrect. That shouldn’t be.
Jiang Lan didn’t want to try again and said, “Your birthday doesn’t work either. Come input it yourself. Two more wrong tries, and the door will lock completely.”
“Okay,” Jiang Ci agreed, pulling her arm from Gu Feiran’s grasp. She extended her index finger, swaying as she muttered and entered the code, “17, 22, 99.”
Beep, the door opened.
Jiang Ci grinned and pulled the door open, “Little Aunt, the door’s open.”
Jiang Lan looked at her, puzzled, and asked, “Your birthday is 0722. How did it become 1722? Is there a 17th month?”
“It’s Miss Qiao’s birthday,” Gu Feiran suddenly spoke, her voice calm. “Miss Qiao’s birthday is 0917.”
Jiang Lan froze, glancing at Dr. Gu. Her face was expressionless, cold as usual, but something felt different. Still, why did Xiao Ci change the password months ago, and Dr. Gu knew about it?
“Little Aunt, I’m home,” Jiang Ci suddenly broke free from her hand, pushed the door wide open, and stumbled inside.
“Hey, Xiao Ci.”
Jiang Lan had no time to dwell on it and hurriedly followed Jiang Ci.
Gu Feiran followed, closing the door behind her.
After Jiang Lan changed into slippers, she took a pair of guest slippers from the shoe cabinet for Gu Feiran.
Gu Feiran said thanks, bending to hold the cabinet for balance as she put them on.
The apartment was spacious, decorated in simple white and natural wood tones. The living room had all the necessary furniture but no extra decorations or pairings, giving it a strong commercial vibe.
Jiang Lan helped Jiang Ci to her room, then went straight to the kitchen counter. Passing Gu Feiran, she said, “Dr. Gu, can you watch Xiao Ci for me? You don’t need to do anything, just stand by the bed. I’m going to make her some honey water to sober her up.”
“Okay,” Gu Feiran agreed, heading to the bedroom.
When she entered, Jiang Ci was mumbling on the bed, hand on her neck gland, rubbing it constantly, looking very uncomfortable.
“So hot,” Jiang Ci finally said clearly.
“So hot, why is it so hot?”
She said this, kneeling up to unbutton her shirt, but her foggy mind couldn’t undo a single button.
After a minute, Jiang Ci got frustrated, yanking the shirt with both hands, tearing it off and tossing it aside. She wore a white sleeveless camisole underneath.
“So hot, really hot, turn on the AC,” she muttered, climbing off the bed with hands and feet to find the remote.
In her haste, combined with the alcohol, her legs wobbled as she got off the bed. About to fall, Gu Feiran rushed over, bending one knee on the mat, catching her in time. Jiang Ci fell onto her shoulder, her chin hitting Gu Feiran’s shoulder blade, causing Gu Feiran to groan in pain.
Thinking it was her Little Aunt catching her, Jiang Ci pleaded, “Little Aunt, can you turn on the AC? I’m so hot, I’m melting on the spot.”
Jiang Ci had taken off her shirt, now wearing just a camisole. Through the fabric, Gu Feiran couldn’t gauge her exact temperature.
So Gu Feiran moved her hands up to Jiang Ci’s shoulders. Her skin felt normal, not overly warm.
She then touched her arms, which were also normal, but why was she complaining about being hot?
“Little Aunt, I’m so hot.”
Jiang Ci kept saying it, burrowing her head into Gu Feiran’s neck.
Not knowing the cause, Gu Feiran helped Jiang Ci back to the bed, then leaned down, pressing the back of her hand to Jiang Ci’s forehead.
Still normal, no fever.
But Jiang Ci kept complaining, occasionally touching her neck.
Her neck, the gland?
Gu Feiran’s brows furrowed slightly. She leaned closer, placing her left hand gently on Jiang Ci’s neck to check her gland.
“The honey water’s ready.”
Jiang Lan came in with a cup. “Warm water’s too much hassle, so I used cold water.”
Gu Feiran quickly withdrew her hand and stepped back.
Focused on getting Xiao Ci to drink, Jiang Lan only noticed when she got closer that Xiao Ci’s clothes were gone, leaving just a camisole. She asked, “Why’d she take off her clothes?”
Gu Feiran explained, “She said she was hot and couldn’t undo the buttons, so she tore them off.”
“Hot? Drinking that much alcohol, no wonder she’s hot.”
Jiang Lan grumbled, sitting by the bed, propping Jiang Ci up with one hand, coaxing, “Xiao Ci, drink the honey water nicely. Drink it, and your head won’t hurt tomorrow.”
Jiang Ci sat up, holding the glass with both hands, eyes closed, slowly drinking the honey water until it was gone.
After finishing, Jiang Ci seemed much better, gradually calming down.
Jiang Lan stood, tucked her in, then went to get another glass of water, placing it on the table for Jiang Ci to drink when she woke up.
“Dr. Gu, let’s go,” Jiang Lan whispered.
Gu Feiran: “Okay.”
Gu Feiran turned to leave, and Jiang Lan followed, turning off the light. At the door, she glanced back at Jiang Ci on the bed, seeing her nearly asleep, and closed the door with relief.
They walked side by side out of the complex. Jiang Lan said, “Dr. Gu, thank you so much for tonight.”
Gu Feiran replied softly, “We’ve been colleagues for years, and you’re my senior. No need to be so polite.”
Jiang Lan rarely saw Dr. Gu so gentle and casual outside work. It was unexpected, like seeing a hidden side of her. She smiled, “Alright, let’s go. We’ll take you home.”
Gu Feiran: “Hmm.”
Liu Xiting had already driven the car over. They got in and dropped Gu Feiran off at her complex. After saying bye, Gu Feiran turned and entered her complex.
As the car started again, Jiang Lan couldn’t hide her surprise, saying, “Dr. Gu’s complex isn’t cheap, is it?”
Liu Xiting nodded, “Hmm, not cheap. Probably a few million or tens of millions, maybe more.”
Jiang Lan: “…”
Liu Xiting glanced over, amused by Jiang Lan’s expression, and said, “Feeling like Xiao Ci’s wealth isn’t her only advantage anymore?”
Jiang Lan admitted without hesitation, “Hmm.”
At the hospital, Dr. Gu rarely wore expensive luxury items. Her outfits were simple, probably bought for a few bucks at a stall, but they looked pricey on her.
Dr. Gu didn’t eat at the hospital cafeteria and even used coupons when ordering takeout.
How could anyone think Dr. Gu lived in a million- or multimillion-dollar complex? It was unimaginable.
Jiang Lan sighed, saying, “Looks like our Xiao Ci and Dr. Gu are destined to be impossible.”
Liu Xiting comforted her, “But Dr. Gu’s complex is pretty close to your hospital, just a ten-minute drive. How about I check it out in a couple of days and buy you a place there? That way, you can sleep more before work.”
Jiang Lan’s current house, bought a few years ago, was about twenty minutes from the hospital, not too far.
She had considered buying in that complex, but back then, she was at odds with Grandma. With only seven million, she could cover a down payment, but mortgage payments, parking, and property fees would’ve been too much for her doctor’s salary. So she paid in full for her current place.
Jiang Lan looked at her, saying, “No need. My place is fine, and it’s close to your law firm.”
Liu Xiting hummed casually but was already thinking about it.
The next day, Jiang Ci woke up yawning.
She stretched lazily on the bed for half a minute, groaned, then opened her eyes, staring blankly at the ceiling.
That sleep was so comfortable, no dreams at all.
It’d been a while since she slept so well.
Jiang Ci let out a long breath, sat up with both hands, grabbed her phone from the pillow, unlocked it, and opened WeChat.
Little Aunt had sent a message at seven in the morning.
Little Aunt: When you wake up, make another cup of honey water to avoid a hangover headache. Don’t use hot water—warm or cold is fine.
Jiang Ci replied: I’m fine, Little Aunt. My head doesn’t hurt at all, and I feel super energetic.
Jiang Lan was busy in the department all morning and only checked her phone at lunch.
Jiang Lan: No headache and feeling super energetic? You were so drunk last night you couldn’t walk, and now no headache? That’s weird.
Jiang Ci, on her way to the company after class, saw Little Aunt’s reply and quickly typed back: Was I that drunk last night?
Jiang Lan: Drunk, very drunk. So drunk I couldn’t hold you up alone. Dr. Gu and I got you home. If you weren’t drunk, you’d remember, right?
That… Jiang Ci really couldn’t remember.
Her mind was blank about last night, no memory of how she got home.
Jiang Lan: Thank Dr. Gu when you have time. Without her help, you’d have fallen several times.
Jiang Ci: Hmm, okay, I got it.
Jiang Lan: Also, change your door lock password. What’s with 172299? She’s your ex. Stop holding on.
Jiang Ci’s brain froze, and she sat up straight: Huh?
Jiang Lan: Huh what? Last night, Dr. Gu and I took you home. You entered the password yourself. Dr. Gu said 17 is that Qiao girl’s birthday. Change it quick.
Jiang Ci awkwardly rubbed her forehead.
Oh, right, speaking of Dr. Gu, there’s something to do today—take the agreement contract to the hospital for her to sign.
