Chapter 2: You Shower First, or Me First?
While everyone was arguing and blaming that woman, a group of people suddenly rushed into the hotel entrance.
Jiang Ci heard the noise and turned to look.
About a dozen people came in, led by a lady with white hair, wearing reading glasses, her posture calm and steady.
Behind her were a few middle-aged men and women, and at the back were some young people, their positions clearly defined.
They were probably leaders and workers from some company or organization.
The receptionist who had helped Jiang Ci earlier came forward to greet them, politely saying a few words.
The lady nodded gently with a kind expression.
Then the receptionist turned to the sofa area and said to everyone there, “Don’t worry, everyone. This is a doctor from the city hospital’s general surgery department, very professional.”
“So she’s from the city hospital.”
“It’s hard to get an appointment with their surgical department. You have to wait in a long line.”
“This person is lucky to have met a doctor. Otherwise, we wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Exactly.”
Everyone discussed and let out a sigh of relief.
Jiang Ci slowly loosened her jacket, which she had rolled into a pillow. So it was someone from the city hospital. No wonder her technique was so professional.
When someone has a seizure, you shouldn’t pinch their philtrum or press their chest. You should let the patient lie on their side to clear secretions and ensure breathing, then wait for them to recover on their own.
This was what her aunt taught her.
Speaking of which, the other guest in her room must be one of them. That was reassuring.
About five or six minutes later, the middle-aged woman on the sofa stopped convulsing and gradually regained consciousness. She opened her eyes, looking around in confusion, as if she didn’t know where she was. But she seemed to realize soon enough that she had just had a seizure.
She needed to go to the hospital, but with such heavy rain, it was unclear if an ambulance could make it.
Either way, Jiang Ci hoped the lady would be okay.
“Are you okay?” the doctor asked her.
“I’m fine, just a headache,” the lady replied.
Seeing this, a hotel staff member kindly brought over a bottle of mineral water but handed it from a distance without getting close.
There was still a pile of secretions on the floor.
Then the city hospital group walked over. The leading lady sat down to give the middle-aged woman a quick check and took her pulse.
“Little Gu, contact a nearby hospital to see if we can send her there,” she said.
The doctor who had helped earlier stood up and took out her phone from her pocket. “Okay, I’ll make the call.”
She pushed through the crowd to make the call. Jiang Ci couldn’t help but glance at her.
She wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her forearms, revealing fair skin, slim black pants, and high heels, with a slender waist and long legs.
Her clothes suited her, and she suited her clothes even more.
Because of her aunt, Jiang Ci had visited the city hospital’s general surgery department many times but hadn’t seen this doctor before.
With the doctor’s arrival, the lobby gradually quieted down.
People started heading back to sit against the walls.
The weather forecast said the rain would stop around eleven at night, so these people didn’t plan to stay at the hotel.
They were just taking shelter from the rain and would leave once it stopped.
After all, hotel prices were skyrocketing right now. One night’s stay would cost several days’ worth of work to afford.
Jiang Ci had booked a room. She hugged her wet clothes, turned to pick up the bag she had dropped earlier, bent down to grab it, and held it as she headed to the elevator.
Due to the heavy rain, many guests were checking in that night. She waited until the third wave to get in line.
“Sorry, everyone, can we cut in? There’s a patient here who needs rest, and the rain’s too heavy for an ambulance to get through,” two doctors said as they helped the middle-aged woman from the sofa approach when the elevator reached the tenth floor.
Jiang Ci, standing near the back, instinctively stepped aside to make room.
Others followed suit, clearing a path.
The doctors and the middle-aged woman nodded apologetically to them. “Thank you, thank you.”
“No problem, patients come first,” everyone said.
Stepping back, Jiang Ci continued waiting for the elevator.
She wasn’t sure if she was overthinking, but she felt like people were starting to stare at her, and their looks seemed meaningful.
Was there something on her face?
Doubting herself, Jiang Ci raised the bag to cover her face, pulled her phone from her jeans’ back pocket, opened the camera, and checked her face carefully. There was nothing on it, perfectly clean.
Confused, Jiang Ci put her phone down. When she turned her head, she noticed not only the people by the elevator but even those sheltering in the lobby were looking her way, whispering to each other.
Jiang Ci’s face showed confusion: “?”
Just as she found it strange, Doctor Gu walked over from the lobby, her high heels clicking.
Earlier, in the lobby, she was too far to see her face.
Now, as she got closer, Jiang Ci realized Doctor Gu was quite beautiful.
Her skin was fair, her features delicate, with long lashes, a high nose bridge, and a lovely cheek contour. Her aura was cool.
Overall, she was a strikingly elegant beauty with a cool charm.
Especially her thick black hair, from which a cute, fair ear peeked out, like a little cat’s.
The elevator area was crowded with no space to stand, so Doctor Gu stopped less than two steps away from her.
She was so close that Jiang Ci could smell the faint mandarin perfume on her and even see the soft fuzz on her ear.
It was the first time Jiang Ci had seen someone with such cute ears.
Ding—the elevator arrived.
Everyone put away their phones and got on one by one.
Jiang Ci snapped out of her thoughts and joined the line, but as soon as she stepped in, the elevator started beeping.
Everyone inside instantly turned to look at her.
Including Doctor Gu, who hadn’t yet boarded and was standing behind her, staring directly at her.
Now she knew why everyone was looking.
Jiang Ci, carrying her clothes and bag, stepped out of the elevator. As soon as she did, the beeping stopped.
Jiang Ci: “…”
The elevator doors closed and started moving.
Once everyone left, it was just her and Doctor Gu, standing quietly side by side, like gatekeepers.
Soon, the group of doctors from the lobby came over, chatting with Doctor Gu.
Jiang Ci overheard a bit. They were on a business trip for a seminar and had just arrived from the high-speed rail station two hours ago.
They had planned to return to the hospital for a meeting, but the rain forced them to stay here for the night and head back early tomorrow.
After a few minutes of chatting, the elevator came down.
Jiang Ci was at the front and stepped in first, reaching to press the button for the ninth floor.
Her room was 907.
Gu Feiran was the second to enter. She leaned slightly, reaching for the floor button, but realized it was already pressed. Her eyelids trembled slightly, almost unnoticeably. She withdrew her slender fingers, clenched her hand, and stepped over to stand beside Jiang Ci.
In the corner, Jiang Ci didn’t notice Gu Feiran standing next to her, her mind focused on the fact that she hadn’t pressed the elevator button.
If she didn’t press it, was she also on the ninth floor?
Jiang Ci instantly tensed up. It couldn’t be that coincidental, could it?
“Hey, Old Li, move inside, move inside.”
“You think this is a bus? Move inside? This elevator’s only so big. You guys get out and wait for the next one.”
There were over a dozen of them, and one elevator couldn’t fit them all. The other elevator was still lingering on the twentieth floor, so those who didn’t want to wait tried to squeeze into this one, arguing for everyone to move in.
Jiang Ci was pushed until she had to stand straight, clutching her bag tightly, pressed against the back. Her shoes had already been stepped on several times, the tips covered in footprints.
After about a minute of struggling, they realized the elevator couldn’t fit everyone. They gave up, and the doors slowly closed.
The elevator stopped at the third floor first.
Then the fifth, the seventh, and by the ninth floor, only she and Doctor Gu remained.
The doors opened, and Gu Feiran stepped out first.
Jiang Ci pulled her room card from her jeans pocket, followed behind Gu Feiran, and checked the room numbers: 903, 905, 907.
Jiang Ci found 907, but Doctor Gu also stopped at 907.
Beep, the sound of the card swipe echoed in the empty hallway.
Gu Feiran’s slender index and middle fingers lightly held the room card, her palm pressing the handle. She pushed the door open a crack, about to enter, but paused, turned to Jiang Ci, who was still dazed, and said gently, “Come in.”
Then she pushed the door open and walked inside.
Jiang Ci helplessly touched her forehead, feeling an odd embarrassment lingering in her heart. But the hotel only had this one standard room left. If she didn’t stay, she’d have to squat in the lobby. She had no choice.
Jiang Ci sighed softly, set down her bag, and walked into the room as if her feet were weighed down.
The room’s lights were already on, with a warm wooden style. Two white single beds were visible upon entering, each with a gray blanket at the foot.
Between the beds was a small cabinet with a phone and some tissues.
Jiang Ci set her bag down and changed into slippers first.
Her shoes were completely soaked from the rain, squishing water with every step, and very uncomfortable.
After changing, Jiang Ci bent down to pick them up, pushed open the bathroom door, propped the shoes against the floor, and hung her wet jacket on the drying rack.
After finishing, she walked further inside.
Two beds—should she be polite and let the other choose first?
As Jiang Ci wondered how to divide the beds, she turned and saw a laptop and a black bag on the bed near the bathroom. But Doctor Gu hadn’t been carrying anything earlier.
Oh, Jiang Ci suddenly remembered.
No wonder the receptionist said the other guest in this standard room was a doctor and told her to rest assured. She had booked the room earlier and had already been inside.
Jiang Ci felt relieved and walked to the bed by the window.
“You shower first, or me first?”
Gu Feiran asked as she took off her shirt, holding the collar and draping it over the chair back.
There was an unpleasant smell on the shirt.
It was uncomfortable to wear.
When Jiang Ci was asked, she instinctively turned to look but didn’t expect her to be undressing. Though she still wore a tank top, Jiang Ci quickly turned her head away, not wanting to stare. “You shower first. I’ll wait.”
Gu Feiran gave a soft “Hmm” and went to the bathroom.
Jiang Ci let out a sigh of relief.
