Accidentally Marked My Ex’s Crush, the Ice-Cold Goddess O - Chapter 3: Fever Period
Chapter 3: Fever Period
Dr. Gu went to the bathroom to shower, closed the door, and soon the sound of rushing water filled the air.
This room really wasn’t soundproof at all.
Jiang Ci glanced over, then turned to the floor-to-ceiling window, took out her phone, and turned off airplane mode.
The home screen showed over a hundred missed calls and dozens of unread messages. She ignored them all and opened WeChat.
Red dots of unread messages filled the screen.
Buzz, buzz, buzz.
Jiang Ci was about to reply to a few when a call came in. She meant to hang up, but the caller ID showed Xiao Ning.
Jiang Ci swiped to answer: “Hello, Xiao Ning.”
“Sis, you finally picked up! You scared me to death.” Jiang Ning’s body went limp on the other end, collapsing onto the carpet.
Jiang Ci chuckled lightly: “Sorry, I made you worry.”
Jiang Ci raised her left wrist, glanced at her watch, “It should be early morning where you are, right? Why aren’t you asleep?”
Jiang Ning stayed on the floor, still shaken with fear, “I didn’t sleep all night, kept calling and texting you, scared you might do something foolish because of the broken engagement.”
She was going crazy with worry over here. If there had been a flight, she would’ve come back overnight.
Jiang Ci reassured her: “How could I? It’s not a big deal, I wouldn’t do anything rash.”
Jiang Ning slowly curled her legs, hugged her knees, and rested her chin on them: “Then why didn’t you reply? I was so worried.”
Jiang Ci looked up at the pouring rain hitting the window, raised her hand, and pressed her index finger lightly on the cool glass, “You know how Grandma is. Everyone needs to cool off. I’ll deal with it tomorrow morning.”
Grandma’s personality… overbearing, self-centered.
If things didn’t go her way, she’d scold or hit you. Back then, Jiang Ci couldn’t take it and left the country, but her sister stayed.
Over the years, her sister endured a lot by Grandma’s side.
Jiang Ning’s voice softened: “Sis, are you…”
“I’m fine. By the way, how’s it going abroad? Is school going well?” Jiang Ci asked with concern.
Her sister went abroad for college after high school, rarely came back, and Jiang Ci wondered if the girl was taking care of herself.
Last time she came back, she looked much thinner.
Jiang Ci didn’t want to talk about it, so Jiang Ning didn’t press, answering instead: “School’s going great. I’ll get my degree next month if my defense goes well.”
Jiang Ci hummed, then asked: “After graduation, are you staying in M Country to work, or coming back?”
Jiang Ning: “I’m coming back.”
After escaping for so many years, it was time to return. She couldn’t let her sister handle family matters alone.
Jiang Ci, who’d been down all day, brightened up hearing she’d return: “Great, send me a message when you’re coming back, and I’ll pick you up at the airport.”
Jiang Ning smiled and nodded: “Hmm, okay. About the broken engagement, Sis, don’t think too much. It’s fine.”
Jiang Ci smiled fondly: “Got it.”
After hanging up, Jiang Ci scrolled through the flood of WeChat messages, replying only to a few close people.
The rest of the gossip-hungry crowd? She ignored them all.
About the broken engagement, Jiang Ci didn’t have much to say.
After all, it was normal for a top-tier omega to look down on a pheromone-deficient alpha like her. Their families’ status and backgrounds didn’t match either, so the cancellation made sense. It’d just take some effort to deal with Grandma.
She hoped the storm would calm down a bit by tomorrow.
Jiang Ci put down her phone, glanced toward the bathroom, and heard the water still running. Dr. Gu might take a while.
Might as well grab some food downstairs—she was starving after a busy day without a single meal.
Jiang Ci went downstairs, stepped out of the hotel, and a gust of wind blew her hair up, making her look like Sadako from a TV screen.
After hours of rain, the water outside reached her knees.
This rain was really something.
But with it pouring like this, where could she get food?
With no choice, Jiang Ci turned back into the hotel, bought a cup of instant noodles, two bottles of water, and two cans of beer.
The hotel room had a kettle, but she didn’t dare use it.
So, after buying the noodles, she got hot water from the front desk and carried the cup back to her room.
The noodles were best when half-soft, half-firm—just perfect by the time she got upstairs.
“Let’s eat!” Jiang Ci opened the noodle lid.
Sure, instant noodles got old if you ate them too often, but once in a while, they hit the spot.
If only she had some green onions, cilantro, a fried egg, sausage, or pickles—it’d be perfect.
Slurp—
As Jiang Ci ate happily, the bathroom door suddenly opened.
Mouth full, she looked up, and in that moment, her jaw wouldn’t close.
Dr. Gu wore a black high-slit robe-style nightgown, her long, wet hair cascading over her shoulders, the low neckline blending with her pale skin.
She took a few steps forward, the warm light casting a golden glow around her.
Hotel robes were plain white with a simple tie, so this nightgown must be hers, Jiang Ci thought.
“Go shower. I cleaned the bathroom.”
Gu Feiran pulled a hairdryer from her suitcase, plugged it in, and started drying her hair.
The dryer hummed loudly.
“Uh, okay.” Jiang Ci realized she’d been rude, buried her face in her noodles, and finished them in under a minute.
After eating, she sipped her beer, got up, and went to shower.
Jiang Ci was quick, out in twenty minutes, still in her shirt and pants.
She didn’t trust the hotel’s robe and hadn’t brought pajamas, so she had to wear her own clothes.
Hopefully, Dr. Gu wouldn’t think she was unhygienic.
Gu Feiran was at the desk, busy with something, and glanced back, eyeing Jiang Ci up and down. Then she walked to her suitcase, bent down, pulled out a set of clothes from the top, and handed them over: “If you don’t mind, you can wear mine. They’re washed, very clean.”
“Oh, thanks, thank you.” She’s pretty nice.
Jiang Ci took the clothes with both hands, slipped back into the bathroom, and changed.
There was even a set of disposable underwear included.
She didn’t know why this doctor was so kind, but having clothes to change into was better than nothing.
After changing, Jiang Ci checked herself in the mirror.
The outfit was a simple white cloud-patterned T-shirt and black shorts. She tugged the collar to her nose, catching a faint, pleasant gardenia scent.
It clashed with the mandragora scent on her own body, and she wondered which was her pheromone.
She never thought her pheromone deficiency was a big deal before, but now it suddenly felt… well, deficient.
Oh well, deficient it is.
Jiang Ci adjusted the hem, opened the bathroom door, and stepped out, her old clothes draped over her arm.
Hmm… where’s the doctor?
The room was empty, no sign of anyone. Did Gu Feiran go out?
“Can I borrow one of your beers?” A voice came from the floor-to-ceiling window.
Jiang Ci followed the sound and saw a slender, pale arm raised, holding one of the beers she’d bought.
She was sitting on the carpet.
Jiang Ci placed her clothes on a chair: “Hmm, of course.”
“Thanks.” She lowered her hand and took a sip.
The air fell quiet.
“Wanna clink glasses?”
She turned, her eyes sparkling like stars, beautiful.
Jiang Ci couldn’t find a reason to refuse, nodded, walked around the bed, and sat on the carpet beside her.
A gap in the curtains showed rain pounding the glass, with occasional lightning flashing bright as day.
“I know you, Miss Jiang,” she said.
Jiang Ci raised her beer, about to sip to ease the awkward silence, but paused at her words: “You know me?”
What kind of knowing?
Gu Feiran lowered her head, scrolled through her phone, found a video, and handed it to Jiang Ci.
Jiang Ci switched the beer to her other hand, took the phone, and pressed play.
The next second: “…”
[The Qiao Group’s heiress announced the end of her engagement with Jiang Ci of the Jiang family. One’s a top-tier omega, the other a pheromone- and gland-deficient alpha…]
The video had over two million likes, tens of thousands of comments, and 230,000 shares.
People sure loved gossip.
Jiang Ci pursed her lips, her smile a bit bitter.
No wonder so many people stared while she waited for the elevator—she’d been recognized.
Jiang Ci gripped the beer can, handed the phone back, and said cheerfully: “Pretty high likes.”
Gu Feiran took the phone and asked: “Are you really unaffected by pheromones?”
“No.” Jiang Ci shook her head lightly.
Pheromone- and gland-deficient meant exactly that.
She wouldn’t have a fever period, wouldn’t be affected by an omega’s fever period, couldn’t mark any omega, and even top-tier omegas who could reverse-mark couldn’t mark her.
In short, she was basically a beta, despite having glands.
Simpler still: a useless alpha.
Jiang Ci took a sip of her beer.
Gu Feiran sipped hers too, her gaze drifting to the gap in the curtains, saying with meaning: “No wonder.”
“No wonder what?” Jiang Ci asked casually.
Gu Feiran: “No wonder my fever period started, pheromones filling the room, and you didn’t react at all.”
“What?” Jiang Ci’s face froze in shock.
Her fever period started, but Jiang Ci didn’t catch a hint of it?
Oh, right.
She just said she was pheromone-deficient, immune to omega pheromones.
Jiang Ci chuckled: “No reaction’s a good thing. At least you don’t have to worry about me doing anything… out of line.”
As she spoke, a weight suddenly pressed on her shoulder, the scent of mandragora flooding her senses.
She glanced down at her side.
Dr. Gu had collapsed onto her, her body burning at an unbelievable temperature.
Jiang Ci might be immune to an omega’s fever period, but the omega herself suffered greatly during it. Relief came only through an alpha’s mark or suppressants.
“Dr. Gu, are you okay?”
Jiang Ci set down her beer, propped herself up, and knelt to support her.
Gu Feiran slowly curled her legs, clutching her nightgown’s collar, lowering her head, struggling against the sensitivity and discomfort of her fever period.
“Dr. Gu.” Jiang Ci called nervously.
Gu Feiran couldn’t respond, her body slumping as if about to fall.
Jiang Ci quickly caught her, pulling her into an embrace, feeling her scorching heat through their clothes.
There were no suppressants here, and she was a useless alpha. What could she do?
