Chapter 32: I Will Make Sure You’re Okay
The two kissed for a while, then embraced and fell onto the bed.
Jiang Ci knew this was a test, so she didn’t dare move her hands freely. She only held Dr. Gu while kissing, her hands resting honestly on Dr. Gu’s waist. Only when she couldn’t help herself did she grip a little harder, feeling the softness.
Beep beep beep, beep beep beep.
While they kissed passionately, a detector on someone’s nape suddenly went off, sounding harsh like an alarm.
Jiang Ci froze, still holding Dr. Gu’s lips.
Dr. Gu took the chance to turn her head, freeing her tongue from the kiss. She didn’t let Jiang Ci continue kissing, tightening her breathing. Her chest rose and fell, a burning heat and desire spreading from her nape to her limbs, making her hands and feet weak and her ears red and hot.
“What was that sound?” Jiang Ci lifted her hand, placing it near Dr. Gu’s ear, propping herself up and asking in confusion.
Dr. Gu had no mind to answer this question. She lifted her eyes to look at Jiang Ci, her gaze red and heated, wet and glistening. Her clear voice turned low and husky. “Don’t you know how to kiss?”
“Hmm, what?” Jiang Ci looked down at her.
Kiss?
Weren’t they just kissing?
Jiang Ci boldly said, “I do.”
Dr. Gu heard her confident “I do,” her expression puzzled and incredulous. Then, enduring the soreness from her lips and tongue, she reached out to push Jiang Ci’s shoulders, gently pushing her away.
Jiang Ci sat up, reaching back to touch the detector on her nape, asking again, “Dr. Gu, whose detector was beeping just now?”
“Mine.”
Dr. Gu said as she removed the detector from her nape.
If the pheromone concentration exceeded ninety-five, the device would sound a warning. This was the first time she heard it.
Jiang Ci leaned over, resting against Dr. Gu’s half-exposed shoulder, craning her neck to see the numbers displayed. “Pheromone concentration ninety-eight, Dr. Gu, you broke a record.”
Dr. Gu was also surprised. It reached ninety-eight, a value never reached in all her past heat cycles. Being together really did increase pheromone concentration.
“Turn around.” Dr. Gu wanted to check hers.
An S-level omega pheromone concentration reaching ninety-six was enough to make all levels of alpha and omega lose control. Even an S-level alpha would be slightly affected. She wondered how Jiang Ci’s condition was. Even a one would be fine, as long as there was something.
Jiang Ci obediently turned around.
Dr. Gu removed the detector from her nape, and the moment she saw the data, her mind buzzed and exploded.
It was still zero, no change at all.
Jiang Ci saw it too but wasn’t very surprised. She lifted her hand to pull up Dr. Gu’s nightgown, which had slipped to her shoulder blades, covering her chest and the exposed allure, comforting her, “I think this method might not be useless. Maybe we used the wrong method or timing.”
Dr. Gu held the detector, lowering her wrist to rest on her knee, asking, “What’s your great idea, Miss Jiang?”
Jiang Ci analyzed, “My thought is, although you said my gland mutation was caused by marking you, it doesn’t mean I can sense your pheromones, nor does it mean my gland can be used anytime. Maybe when my gland acts up again, like it did today at the hospital, we can try again. It might work then. That’s my guess.”
It made some sense.
Dr. Gu’s worries were somewhat eased.
Dr. Gu said, “If that’s the case, let’s stop here for today. We’ll try again when your gland acts up next time. But Wednesday and Saturday schedules stay the same. What if this method works too?”
Jiang Ci nodded, “Okay, I’ll listen to Dr. Gu.”
The test ended tonight. Dr. Gu stood up from the bed, planning to take a shower, but her gland suddenly heated up, making her legs weak. She almost didn’t stand steady, and her body temperature rose.
She almost forgot—her pheromone concentration was zero, but Dr. Gu’s was ninety-six. If she didn’t lower it soon, it might trigger a heat cycle.
Dr. Gu thought about it and looked down at her.
Jiang Ci raised her head, innocently asking, “What’s wrong, Dr. Gu? Is there something else? Tell me, I’m listening.”
Dr. Gu looked for a moment, then shook her head.
Forget it. Using her to deal with the heat cycle was worse than using a suppression patch. At least her lips wouldn’t be bitten until they hurt and went numb.
She’d teach her how to kiss later.
Dr. Gu switched the detector to her right hand, gently pressing her left thumb against Jiang Ci’s lip corner, wiping it twice, and said softly, “It’s nothing. Go rest. I’ll make sure you’re okay.”
Jiang Ci’s heart wavered, deeply touched, but she didn’t show it. She stood up and said, “Okay, Dr. Gu, you rest early too. Thanks for your hard work tonight. Good night.”
Dr. Gu said, “Hmm, good night.”
After Jiang Ci left, Dr. Gu put the detector and touchscreen display into a box, went to the closet to grab a new nightgown, and took a shower. When she came out, she applied a suppression patch to her nape.
That night, Jiang Ci slept honestly in the guest room and left a little after seven in the morning.
On the way back, she dropped Dr. Gu off at the hospital for work.
Before getting out of the car, Jiang Ci called out to her, “Dr. Gu, can I ask you for a favor?”
Dr. Gu asked, “What?”
Jiang Ci said, “When you’re not busy or if you run into Little Aunt at the hospital, please comfort her a bit. Don’t let her overthink. Little Aunt’s reaction yesterday was pretty unusual. I don’t want her to worry too much.”
The gland mutation could be a big or small issue. Even if she were to die from physical decline one day, it would be years from now, so there was no need to think too much about it now.
Jiang Ci finished, still uneasy, and added, “Never mind, I’ll go talk to Little Aunt myself later.”
“Okay.” Dr. Gu let her be.
The hospital wasn’t too crowded in the morning. Jiang Ci found a parking spot in the lot, parked the car, and jogged to the General Surgery Department, finding Jiang Lan in her office.
Jiang Lan had been worrying about Jiang Ci’s condition all night, barely sleeping, and had heavy dark circles this morning.
While checking patient files, she was holding her breath.
“Little Aunt,” Jiang Ci called softly.
Jiang Lan thought she was hallucinating so early in the morning. When she looked up and saw Xiao Ci standing right in front of her, she suddenly realized, “Xiao Ci, why are you here?”
Jiang Ci smiled, placing the breakfast she bought on the desk, and said softly, “Little Aunt, I brought you breakfast and wanted to tell you I’m fine. Don’t worry too much. Look, I’m perfectly okay, right? In a couple of days, I’ll go to another hospital to check what’s going on. Maybe this gland mutation is a good thing. Also, Little Aunt, don’t tell Mother, Sister, Little Ning, or Grandma. Let’s keep it between us.”
“But…” Jiang Lan hesitated.
Jiang Ci bent down, saying seriously, “Little Aunt, because of my pheromone inability, Sister and Little Ning are already worried. If we tell them now that my gland has mutated and is constantly draining my life, they can’t come back and will only worry more. Why bother? We can tell them when they’re back.”
Jiang Lan understood her thinking and said, “Xiao Ci, I can agree to keep this a secret, but you must actively treat the gland mutation. If you dare give up or treat it lightly, I’ll tell everyone.”
Jiang Ci nodded, “Okay, I understand.”
Jiang Lan added, “Don’t just understand. Besides getting checked and treated, you can also try meeting some top-level omegas or S-level omegas during this time. If someone can help you, it could be a good match. Whatever they want, as long as the Jiang family can provide, we’ll give it.”
Jiang Ci chuckled lightly, “Okay, definitely.”
Leaving Little Aunt’s office, Jiang Ci gently touched her forehead.
She had convinced Little Aunt, but she still had to see Dr. Gu every Wednesday and Saturday.
Honestly, if she had known last night that her gland discomfort was due to a mutation, she would never have come to this hospital.
Jiang Ci went to the parking lot, drove out, and returned to school for classes. After lunch, she sat in the car working on her paper.
Buzz buzz. Jiang Ci was focused on searching for materials when her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID: Chairman.
She immediately answered like facing a great enemy, “Hello, Chairman.”
Qian Ying said, “Come to the company now.”
Jiang Ci replied, “Okay.”
The call ended. Jiang Ci packed her laptop and tablet into the back seat, got out of the car, and drove away from the school.
At the Jiang Group company, Jiang Ci was led straight to Grandma’s office by an assistant. “President Jiang, please go in. The Chairman is waiting inside.”
Jiang Ci nodded, “Okay, thank you.”
Jiang Ci stepped inside, instinctively wanting to call out to the Chairman, but when she saw the person sitting next to Grandma, her expression froze. She quickly recovered and greeted, “Chairman, Director Qiao.”
“President Jiang, long time no see,” Qiao Zhenfei said.
Jiang Ci smiled, “It’s been a while. Director Qiao looks even younger and more radiant.”
Director Qiao, Qiao Zhenfei, Qiao Yunchi’s mother.
At the engagement ceremony that day, after Qiao Yunchi left, it was Qiao Zhenfei who declared the engagement off and said the cooperation with the Jiang family was over. She never expected Grandma to be sitting with her again.
Qiao Zhenfei looked at Jiang Ci and said, “Hearing that, someone might think I’m ancient.”
Jiang Ci softly explained, “Director Qiao, you’re joking. It’s just been so long, I almost thought I mistook someone else.”
Qiao Zhenfei scoffed, full of disdain.
If Yunchi hadn’t genuinely liked this pheromone-incompetent waste, she would never have agreed to that marriage. Luckily, Yunchi came to her senses and called off the engagement that day.
Qian Ying spoke up, “Regarding the canceled engagement, I’ve discussed it with Director Qiao. Our two families will continue to have a good cooperative relationship. Jiang Ci, don’t hold any prejudice.”
Jiang Ci said, “I wouldn’t dare hold prejudice against Director Qiao.”
Qiao Zhenfei said sternly, “You don’t dare hold prejudice against me, but you do against Yunchi. I heard from Yunchi that you deleted her, and when she tried to add you back, you didn’t accept? President Jiang, our Yunchi is not only a top-level omega but also a big star in the entertainment industry. Her adding you on WeChat is your blessing, and you dare not agree?”
Jiang Ci said softly, “The engagement between Yunchi and me is over. Keeping her on WeChat didn’t seem right, so I deleted her.”
Qiao Zhenfei said, “The engagement ending is one thing, but Yunchi wanting to keep you on WeChat or add you back is her business. Who are you to decide on your own?”
Jiang Ci lowered her head, subtly frowning, “Director Qiao is right. I’ll add Miss Qiao back later.”
Qiao Zhenfei ordered, “Add her now.”
Jiang Ci said, “Okay.”
She took out her phone from her pocket, passed Qiao Yunchi’s WeChat friend request, and sent a message.
Jiang Ci said, “Director Qiao, I added her back.”
Qiao Zhenfei looked away, scoffing, “That’s more like it.”
Jiang Ci slowly tightened her grip on the phone, her expression uneasy.
