Chapter 39: Rotten Peach Blossom
Regarding that person’s blind date, Gu Feiran didn’t ask much.
If she really had that intention, Gu Feiran would consider herself blind, and whether the other person lived or died in the future would have nothing to do with her.
After Gu Feiran finished eating, someone called out to her on the way back to her office. Turning around, it was Dr. Jiang. “Dr. Jiang.”
Jiang Lan walked up to her and asked in a low voice, “Dr. Gu, there’s something I want to talk to you about. Can we go to your office?”
Gu Feiran said, “Sure.”
The two entered the office. Gu Feiran went in first, while Jiang Lan followed, locking the door behind her. Turning around, she said, “Dr. Gu, about Xiao Ci’s abnormal pheromone issue, I hope you can act like you don’t know or not mention it to anyone, especially those involved in gland research.”
There are legal regulations stating that alpha, omega, and beta individuals with abnormalities are obligated to cooperate with relevant genetic research under legal, reasonable, and humanitarian conditions.
If they don’t cooperate, they will be forcibly taken away.
However, after the research is completed, they will receive compensation based on the duration and content of the research.
When Xiao Ci turned eighteen and differentiated into an alpha, she was taken for a month-long study because she had no pheromones and her glands were dysfunctional.
Bl00d draws, tests, and being locked in a room for pheromone experiments.
A whole month of experiments—that kind of torment could only be understood by those who went through it.
These years, no one brought it up again, but unexpectedly, Xiao Ci’s glands underwent a mutation. If those people found out, they might take Xiao Ci away again.
Gu Feiran stood in front of her desk, her demeanor cold. “Hasn’t Miss Jiang been fine since she was discharged?”
Not only fine, but running around every day.
Hearing this, Jiang Lan thought Dr. Gu wasn’t aware of Xiao Ci’s condition and assumed it was just a common mutation. She breathed a sigh of relief. Since Dr. Gu didn’t know, there was no need to explain further and risk raising suspicion.
Jiang Lan smiled and said, “Yes, Xiao Ci is indeed fine, safe and healthy. Well, Dr. Gu, if there’s nothing else, I won’t disturb your work.”
Gu Feiran said, “I’ll see you out.”
Jiang Lan turned to leave. “No need, you’re busy.”
After seeing Dr. Jiang off, Gu Feiran walked to her desk, looking at the thriving money tree, her thick lashes tinged with emotion.
Jiang Ci landed the next evening. Driving out from the airport, lightning flashed, thunder roared, and wind and rain mixed, hinting at a big storm.
The weather forecast said a big storm would hit at eight, and surprisingly accurate this time, thunder started now.
Before the rain began, with few cars on a weekend evening, Jiang Ci floored the accelerator from the airport to the hospital.
When she got close to the hospital, only a few scattered raindrops fell. But the next second, a downpour crashed down.
Raindrops hit the car, creating a blurry mist of water.
Jiang Ci set the wipers to high speed, slowing down to match the car in front. All around were glaring red taillights. Though there weren’t many cars in the city, the heavy storm slowed traffic to a crawl. She reached the hospital past ten.
Jiang Ci parked in the underground lot near the hospital square, took two black long-handled umbrellas from the trunk, and walked to the hospital.
With heavy rain and few people, the hospital lobby was crowded.
Jiang Ci folded her umbrella and took the elevator to the General Surgery Department, only to be told Dr. Gu had just left and was probably downstairs.
Jiang Ci said thanks, switched both umbrellas to one hand, and took out her phone to message Dr. Gu: I’m at the hospital. Have you left by car?
After sending the message, Jiang Ci went to Little Aunt’s office, but a colleague said Little Aunt was on duty tonight. So, she left one umbrella under Little Aunt’s desk with a note.
Then Jiang Ci took the elevator down, quickly walking to the entrance. Scanning the crowd, she didn’t see Dr. Gu. Had she already left?
Buzz, buzz—her phone vibrated in her pocket.
Jiang Ci looked down and saw a message from Dr. Gu.
Gu Feiran: Behind you.
Behind?
Jiang Ci turned around, her gaze cutting through the overlapping crowd, slowly landing on Dr. Gu, standing in the corner with arms crossed, looking at her.
Jiang Ci gripped her phone and umbrella, striding over, apologizing several times for bumping into people before reaching Dr. Gu.
As Jiang Ci walked, her steps slowed unconsciously. Maybe because they hadn’t seen each other in days, Dr. Gu’s aloofness seemed stronger than before, suddenly giving off a “strangers keep out” vibe.
“What’s up?” Dr. Gu’s tone was flat.
Jiang Ci replied, “The forecast said a big storm, and I was worried you couldn’t get a ride, so I came to pick you up.”
Gu Feiran said, “No need, Miss Jiang. You’re overthinking.”
Even someone as dense as Jiang Ci could sense something off in her words. Dr. Gu rarely called her by name, but she definitely wouldn’t call her Miss Jiang.
The three words “Miss Jiang” sounded eerie. Could it be because she broke their plans twice in a row, making Dr. Gu angry?
“Sorry, I’ve been breaking plans this week,” Jiang Ci said.
Gu Feiran didn’t react, just looked at her.
Jiang Ci thought for a moment, then reached into her trench coat pocket, pulling out a dark blue box with a bow and handing it to her. “I was on a business trip these two days, and while shopping with a client, I saw this. I thought it’d look beautiful on you, so I bought it.”
It wasn’t anything precious, just something that caught her eye.
If Dr. Gu liked it, great. If not, Jiang Ci would take it back and get something more valuable next time.
Gu Feiran looked at the gift box in her hand but didn’t take it. “I don’t accept gifts without merit. Besides, if it’s jewelry, I don’t have a chance to wear it at work.”
Reminded by Dr. Gu, Jiang Ci realized doctors often perform surgeries and avoid wearing jewelry to prevent accidents.
Jiang Ci slowly lowered her hand, the gift resting against her clothes in her palm. “Sorry, I forgot about that.”
It seemed choosing a suitable gift was better.
Jiang Ci put the gift box back in her pocket and took out an embroidered panda pendant from another pocket. It looked round and cute. “This was made with a client, but my skills aren’t great, and time was short, so I only embroidered the ‘F’ from your name. Sorry, it’s not great, but you don’t have to wear it. You can hang it on a bag or at home.”
Because the “F” on the pendant was poorly embroidered, Jiang Ci hadn’t planned to show it. But since the necklace wasn’t accepted, she offered the pendant. Looking at the “F,” she suddenly felt it was too embarrassing to give.
Gu Feiran glanced at it. The panda and pendant were quite cute.
But the “F,” as she said, wasn’t well done—crooked and messy.
Gu Feiran looked up at Jiang Ci and said, “Thanks for the thought, but I won’t take it. I heard from Dr. Jiang that you went on a blind date today and might get married next month. I think we should keep some distance.”
Blind date?
So Little Aunt had already told Dr. Gu. No wonder Dr. Gu had been cold since earlier.
Jiang Ci explained, “Sorry, about the blind date, Little Aunt hoped I’d try marking an omega to see if it could fix my gland mutation. I didn’t refuse her because she’s so busy and still worries about me. I didn’t want her to stress. But I threw out all the blind date profiles. I didn’t go today and won’t in the future.”
Jiang Ci sincerely said, “Dr. Gu, sorry.”
She should’ve made it clear earlier.
Gu Feiran said, “I don’t need apologies. Anyone can say sorry. What I want to know is, you refused Dr. Jiang this time, but what about next time? With your personality, you’ll accept while apologizing to me, then one day, when you can’t resist Dr. Jiang’s pressure and meet someone, will I just get another sorry from you?”
Gu Feiran stepped closer, pressing Jiang Ci. “So many people who wronged you never apologized, yet you keep saying sorry to me?”
As her words landed, Jiang Ci clenched her fists, looking at Dr. Gu. A burning bitterness surged through her, nearly overwhelming her.
The rain poured outside, splashing on the steps and wetting their clothes’ edges.
Gu Feiran looked at her, her eyes full of Jiang Ci.
“Dr. Gu, you’re still here?”
A hospital colleague, about to leave, noticed them. She put down her umbrella and walked over to greet them.
Gu Feiran hid her emotions, stepped past Jiang Ci, and stopped a short distance behind her, saying gently, “It’s raining hard. I’m waiting for a ride.”
The colleague had seen them standing close earlier and glanced at Jiang Ci’s back—tall, in a black trench coat, looking slender. From behind, she matched Dr. Gu well. The colleague whispered, “Dr. Gu, is this your girlfriend?”
Gu Feiran denied, “No.”
The colleague said, “Then a suitor, huh? Our Dr. Gu always has admirers wherever she goes. I’m jealous.”
Gu Feiran said, “Rotten peach blossoms too.”
The colleague chuckled, “Any rotten peach blossom that catches Dr. Gu’s eye must be special. But Dr. Gu, listen to me. You’re so pretty, an S-level omega. Don’t fall for someone just because of a few trinkets or small gifts. We should aim for an S-level alpha or someone from a top family who’s generous. Even if you divorce, you’d get a fortune, so the rest of your life won’t be spent slaving away in the hospital.”
Gu Feiran nodded, smiling, “Got it, definitely.”
The colleague glanced at Jiang Ci again, opened her umbrella, and advised, “This one doesn’t seem good enough. Clear things up with her and find someone new.”
Gu Feiran frowned slightly but kept smiling, “Hmm.”
The colleague walked to the steps, turned back to Gu Feiran, “I’m leaving. Need a ride to the station?”
Gu Feiran said, “No, someone’s picking me up.”
“Alright, bye, Dr. Gu.”
“Bye.”
Watching the colleague leave, Gu Feiran looked at Jiang Ci, who had turned around. The necklace and pendant were back in her pocket, holding only an umbrella.
Jiang Ci stopped a step away, meeting her eyes. “I heard what you said. I’ll make it clear to Little Aunt that blind dates won’t happen again. As for our relationship, even if we’re together, you’re not obligated to do tests for me, especially since I haven’t promised you anything.”
Gu Feiran looked away, now much calmer. “I don’t care about promises. Doctors never promise patients a cure—it’s too vague. Just do what’s in front of you well. Don’t do it for me. I’m not that important to you, and you don’t need to put that burden on me.”
“I won’t, don’t worry,” Jiang Ci assured.
Gu Feiran nodded, turned her head, and sighed deeply. “Walk me to the road.”
Jiang Ci opened the umbrella over both of them, gently holding her. “The car’s in the square’s parking lot nearby. It’s a short walk. I’ll take you back.”
After speaking, Jiang Ci helped her down the steps, tilting the umbrella toward Dr. Gu. But Gu Feiran pushed it to the center so neither got wet.
As the umbrella was adjusted, Jiang Ci looked down at Dr. Gu. Raindrops pattered on the umbrella, noisy but not unpleasant.
Jiang Ci said, “Dr. Gu, you’re… really great.”
Gu Feiran said, “I know.”
That response was pretty cute.
Jiang Ci stared at her for a bit, then said, “The other day after work, Little Aunt talked to me. Besides the blind date, she also mentioned you.”
Gu Feiran focused on the road, stepping wide to avoid puddles. “Dr. Jiang doesn’t want me involved in your matters.”
Jiang Ci chuckled lightly, “You guessed it?”
Gu Feiran said, “Dr. Jiang always separates work and personal matters. When your health was fine, she tried to set us up. But since the day you went to the emergency room, she hasn’t mentioned it again and has been colder toward me.”
A gland issue requiring a top-level or S-level omega for reverse marking was too obvious.
Dr. Jiang’s actions were understandable.
Leaving the hospital, on the way to the parking lot, a small puddle had formed on the tiles, about a step wide.
Jiang Ci held Dr. Gu’s waist tighter, lifting her with one arm to step past the puddle.
After crossing, Jiang Ci didn’t let go.
Her mind kept replaying what Dr. Gu had said earlier.
