Accidentally Sold Myself (Rebirth) - Chapter 10
10: Scumbag Woman
Luo Ningshuang’s slightly cold expression and the fingertips casually tapping the steering wheel caught Gu Xi’s eye, sparking a different interpretation in her mind.
As expected, Luo Ningshuang didn’t like her, which was probably why she seemed so angry, right? Angry about the earlier loss of control. Thankfully, Mo Yuze’s phone call came just in time; otherwise…
Sigh, forget it. Why think so much about it?
When they returned to the company, the two remained silent, and an inexplicable sense of tension hung between them. It wasn’t until they entered the elevator that the people in the lobby started whispering among themselves.
“Is that the president’s wife? Why does it feel like they’re fighting?”
“She looks average, not even as pretty as me. Fighting right after getting married? Hmph, just wait until they divorce.”
“Heh, with that face of yours, how dare you even say that? Don’t call the grapes sour just because you can’t have them.”
“Sour? So what? She’s my goddess! I came to LS for her, but who knew my goddess was into women? Why didn’t she pick me? I’d do anything for her.”
“Ugh…”
“What are you all doing? No gossiping during work hours!” The supervisor barked, and the crowd immediately scattered.
At the 26th-floor reception, Jiang Wenxi saw the two arrive and was about to greet them. But sensing the low-pressure atmosphere around them, she quickly shut her mouth and sat down, pretending to be invisible.
Back in the president’s office, Mo Yuze was lounging on the sofa, eating the food Aunt Lan had sent over. When she saw the two enter, she choked slightly on the food in her mouth, patted her chest, and said, “Luo Ningshuang, I’m going back with you tonight. Man, it’s been ages since I’ve seen Uncle and Auntie. I wonder how they’re doing.”
“Stop making excuses. I know what you’re up to. Visiting my parents is just a pretense—you’re here for the drama.” Luo Ningshuang said, sitting back at her desk with a sigh and a smile.
Gu Xi, meanwhile, quietly returned to her seat. Seeing her computer still on, she realized she’d forgotten to shut it down before leaving. She logged back in and resumed typing.
Only when drinking or writing could she empty her mind and forget all the troubles of the real world.
Mo Yuze stealthily approached Luo Ningshuang, poked her shoulder with a finger, and whispered, “Did you two have a fight?”
Luo Ningshuang shook her head, then said uncertainly, “It’s probably not a fight, right?”
“Gu Xi’s a good person. I’m telling you, you’re 27 already. In three years, you’ll be a 30-year-old hag. Stop focusing only on your career.” Mo Yuze said, leaning in to whisper again.
Gu Xi glanced up and saw the two whispering to each other, looking somewhat intimate.
As expected, the gap in their status was always there. Why else would they avoid talking in front of her?
This only strengthened Gu Xi’s resolve to write a great story and sell it for a film adaptation. Maybe that way, she could close the gap between her and Luo Ningshuang… Wait, why was she even thinking about this?
She quickly shook her head. She just wanted to make money, to become famous, to earn “luck points” and avoid a bad ending.
Meanwhile, outside, Jiang Wenxi was secretly reading Gu Xi’s novel on her phone. Originally, she’d planned to shut down Gu Xi’s computer, but she accidentally clicked the mouse and saw the story. So, she signed up for a JJWXC account and started reading it on the sly.
“Ahh, so sweet! Author, I want to sponsor you!” Jiang Wenxi, who previously had no interest in web novels, had now learned all the lingo and even impulsively sent Gu Xi a “landmine” (a paid gift).
“Sponsor what?” Lan Qingxue asked, amused, seeing Jiang Wenxi muttering to herself like a fool.
“Oh, nothing! It’s you! Mo Yuze’s inside, so I won’t entertain you.” Jiang Wenxi said, too engrossed to pay much attention.
“Alright, I’m going in. But you—shouldn’t you be working? If Luo Ningshuang catches you slacking, you might get fired.” Lan Qingxue teased before heading into the president’s office.
Jiang Wenxi looked up, put away her phone, and thought, No way, I’m not losing this great job. She’d have to read at home tonight.
As Lan Qingxue entered, she saw the intimate moment between the two women and couldn’t help but clench her fists, smiling. “Well, well, when did you two get so close?”
Mo Yuze instantly pulled away. Luo Ningshuang raised an eyebrow at the newcomer and said, “What brings you here?”
“You got married, and I didn’t come to check it out? By the way, where’s your wife?” Lan Qingxue noticed another desk in the room, but the person was obscured by the computer.
Luo Ningshuang stood up, walked over to Gu Xi, startling her into quickly closing her computer and standing up.
Luo Ningshuang took her hand and introduced her, “Gu Xi, my wife. This is Lan Qingxue, the heiress of Blue Sky Entertainment.”
“Hi, you can call me Qingxue.” Lan Qingxue said, nodding after glancing at Gu Xi. She’s a beauty.
But Lan Qingxue was puzzled. Mo Yuze and Luo Ningshuang were so close just now, and Gu Xi didn’t seem jealous at all? Or was she overthinking it?
“Hi…”
Gu Xi hadn’t expected to meet the heiress of Blue Sky Entertainment. Though not the biggest in the industry, Blue Sky was the best at producing web dramas. In a few years, it would skyrocket to one of the top entertainment companies. Could she ask Lan Qingxue for a favor? But that didn’t feel right. Gu Xi was conflicted.
Lan Qingxue, always perceptive, noticed Gu Xi’s furrowed brows and had some guesses but didn’t say anything. Instead, she said to Luo Ningshuang, “Send me your wife’s contact info later. We can hang out sometime.”
“Sure, one sec.” Luo Ningshuang picked up her phone and sent Gu Xi’s number to her.
Mo Yuze pouted on the side, clearly unhappy. Lan Qingxue had basically ignored her. Why? Was she that unattractive? Things didn’t use to be like this.
“Oh, by the way, I came to remind you that a certain admirer of yours, after learning you married a woman, has been rushing back from Country A. They’ll probably arrive tomorrow or the day after.” Lan Qingxue said loudly to Luo Ningshuang, watching Gu Xi’s reaction.
But Gu Xi disappointed her. She was still lost in thought, debating whether to use Luo Ningshuang’s connections to get a foot in the door. Her friend had already recommended her work, so maybe she should wait and see.
Seeing Gu Xi seemingly oblivious, Luo Ningshuang felt an odd sense of relief. That admirer, Clarice, was a real headache—impossible to shake off or scold.
Mo Yuze gloated, “Oh man, the annoying one’s back. You’re in for it now, haha.”
“Don’t laugh at others when you’ve got your own mess to deal with.” Lan Qingxue shot back, a bit resentful. “Haven’t you got a pile of debts to settle?”
“What? No way. We’re all adults here—everything’s consensual.” Mo Yuze denied firmly.
“Oh? Really? Then why did I hear someone showed up at your place this morning causing a scene?”
“No way, your info’s wrong.”
Lan Qingxue narrowed her eyes, hitting back, “Is it? Then why were you kicked out of your house and had your card cut off?”
So that’s why she was rambling on the phone earlier—she’s broke and here to mooch food. But wow, these two have serious chemistry!
Gu Xi’s eyes lit up, watching their back-and-forth. Inspiration struck—she could write a love-hate drama based on this.
Suddenly, a faint fragrance hit her nose, and Gu Xi instinctively wrinkled it.
Seeing her cute reaction, Luo Ningshuang couldn’t resist lightly tapping her nose and whispering, “Lan Qingxue has a crush on Mo Yuze. Too bad Mo Yuze’s too much of a player and gets her funds cut off all the time.”
Gu Xi tilted her head slightly, feeling the warm breath on her ear, which sent a tingle through her scalp. Internally, she screamed, Scumbag! Flirting with me when she doesn’t even like me. Just like Mo Yuze, a total scumbag.
“Lan Qingxue, did you come here just to throw shade at me?” Mo Yuze snapped, annoyed at being called out in front of everyone. I have a reputation, you know!
“Alright, don’t get mad. If you scare Qingxue off, no one’s going to take you in.” Luo Ningshuang said, stepping in to smooth things over.
Mo Yuze gave Luo Ningshuang a pitiful look, trying to act cute, but Luo Ningshuang didn’t buy it. “What’s with the face? No matter how silly you act, I’m not taking you in. Don’t even think about it.”
Mo Yuze’s expression cracked, making Gu Xi burst out laughing. She quickly stifled it when the others looked her way.
Talk about a quick face change. Luo Ningshuang: “…”
“President, we’ve finalized the spokesperson selection. The PR team is waiting outside for your approval.” Jiang Wenxi’s voice came through the intercom.
Luo Ningshuang returned to her seat and pressed the answer button. “Let them in.”
Gu Xi sat back down as two people entered and handed documents to Luo Ningshuang. “These are the candidates chosen by the advertising department. They’re all popular young stars with great fanbases and reputations.”
Luo Ningshuang flipped through the files while the two stood nervously, holding their breath until she looked up.
“Gu Xi, come here. Take a look and pick one male and one female you like.” Luo Ningshuang said, her tone unconsciously carrying a hint of indulgence.
The two staff members were stunned, thinking, Picking spokespeople so casually?
Hmph, scumbag. Just putting on a show in front of others.
Still, Gu Xi got up and casually browsed the files. They were all attractive, but they started blending together. For the first time, Gu Xi wondered if she had face blindness.
“These two,” she said, her eyes lighting up as she pointed at two familiar faces.
Luo Ningshuang glanced at her choices and nodded approvingly. “Why them?”
Gu Xi answered honestly, “Lu Wanrou—this actress leaves a strong first impression. She’s not the most beautiful or famous, but she’s the most distinctive and has the best aura.”
“As for Zheng Qianyu, he’s handsome, sunny, and has no scandals. He’s like a rare pure lotus among male stars.”
The real reason? These two would later become a top actress and actor. Though Lu Wanrou tragically passed away young, her fame skyrocketed afterward… Wait, was she trying to profit off a dead person’s fame? No way, definitely not!
Luo Ningshuang nodded, handed the files back, and said, “It’s them. Have the legal department draft A-level contracts, and you handle the negotiations.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Author’s Note:
Host: “Let’s do an interview. Who fell for whom first?”
Gu Xi: “Her…”
Luo Ningshuang: “Her…”
Gu Xi, with an awkward smile: “We mean it was love at first sight.”
Luo Ningshuang, nodding: “Yeah, it just happened.”
Gu Xi: “…” Damn it.
