Accidentally Sold Myself (Rebirth) - Chapter 28
28: The Tired Luo Ningshuang
Gu Xi couldn’t understand why Luo Ningshuang’s temper was so easily triggered. It was just a form of address, nothing more. Besides, she had gotten used to calling her that when they were kids.
That night, Luo Ningshuang slept on the edge of the bed, each with their own blanket, not saying a single word, clearly signaling a cold war unless Gu Xi admitted fault.
But would Gu Xi admit fault? Of course not. In fact, it suited her just fine. Who told Luo Ningshuang to tease her so much that day? She had to get back at her and make her mad.
The next day on the plane, Luo Ningshuang remained silent, while Gu Xi seemed quite cheerful, humming a tune and typing away on her phone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the plane is about to…”
Luo Ningshuang shot a cold glance, pursed her lips, and gave a soft cough. Gu Xi heard it but ignored her, turning sideways to continue typing.
However, an accident happened at that moment. A passenger behind Gu Xi, perhaps with an upset stomach, stood up abruptly, disregarding the plane’s imminent takeoff. As the plane started moving, the passenger lost balance and bumped into Gu Xi, knocking her phone to the ground and stepping on it. Fortunately, the phone was sturdy enough not to break, but what made Gu Xi want to cry was this:
When the passenger bent down to pick up the phone, the screen was still on, and in their haste, they didn’t notice. As the plane jolted again, the passenger steadied themselves by grabbing a seat, then handed the phone back to Gu Xi.
She took it and looked—her 2,000-word draft had been completely deleted.
“Hey, sir, you can’t stand up…”
Whatever the flight attendant was saying to the passenger, Gu Xi couldn’t hear it anymore. All she felt was frustration, compounded by motion sickness. She was like a salted fish, lying there motionless.
It was awful—her stomach churned, and even though it was empty, she couldn’t shake the nausea.
Suddenly, Gu Xi felt a gentle massage on her temple. Opening her eyes, she saw Luo Ningshuang had unbuckled her seatbelt and was softly rubbing her head.
Her foggy mind gradually cleared. Their eyes met—Luo Ningshuang’s gaze softened, her lips pursed in a feigned look of disdain, exuding both pride and helplessness.
Gu Xi’s scalp tingled. Her gaze drifted to Luo Ningshuang’s red lips, recalling the fleeting, ambiguous touch from that day. Her heart began to race uncontrollably. She knew she was shamefully smitten, wanting to keep this person by her side.
But the thought of their three-year contract doused her burning feelings like a bucket of cold water.
Gu Xi pushed her away, saying awkwardly, “I’m feeling better.”
Luo Ningshuang sat back, sighing as if in resignation. “All I did was tell you not to call her ‘Sister Xi.’ Is it worth staying mad until now?”
Gu Xi: “…” What? Turning the tables on her?
Gu Xi turned her head, ready to retort, but seeing Luo Ningshuang’s teasing smile, her words fizzled out. She huffed, “I’m not mad. You’re the one who’s mad.”
“Since you know I’m mad, why haven’t you tried to comfort me?” Luo Ningshuang grabbed Gu Xi’s hand, sounding helpless.
Gu Xi stiffened slightly. She really wanted to ask Luo Ningshuang what she meant by all this. If she didn’t like her, why do so many things that could be misunderstood?
But she didn’t dare. Every time she was teased, it sparked a fire in her. Unwilling to back down, she grabbed Luo Ningshuang’s collar with her other hand, pulled her close, and quickly planted a kiss near her lips with a loud “muah.”
Seeing Luo Ningshuang’s stunned expression—so adorably dazed—Gu Xi felt satisfied. She smoothed out the wrinkled collar and grinned, “Alright, darling, no more sulking. There can be plenty of ‘sisters,’ but you’re my one and only wife!”
Hmph, touched yet? For someone like Gu Xi, who wrote web novels, cheesy lines like these were a dime a dozen.
But Luo Ningshuang sighed, her tone filled with disappointment. “Gu Xi, I didn’t expect you to be like this!”
Gu Xi: “…?”
“I didn’t think you’d be like those slick-talking men, wanting to keep the ‘red flag’ at home while letting ‘colorful flags’ flutter outside. One wife isn’t enough—you still want a bunch of sisters?” Luo Ningshuang’s eyes sparkled with mischief.
Gu Xi: “…” Wait, that’s not what she meant! But, thinking about it from another angle, it did kind of sound like that?
“Big Boss, I wouldn’t dare! You hold the purse strings. If you cut off my allowance, all those ‘colorful flags’ would turn into white flags!” Gu Xi said with a sly smile, putting on a cunning, money-grubbing expression.
“Keep talking nonsense!” Luo Ningshuang teased. “How’s your head? Still dizzy?”
Gu Xi shook her head and was surprised to find, “Hey, I’m really not dizzy anymore. That’s amazing.”
With two hours left until their destination, she had enough time to write a chapter. Without hesitation, she dove back into typing.
Luo Ningshuang, left ignored on the side: “…” She wanted to pry open Gu Xi’s head to see what was in there. Didn’t she say she loved flying? Why was she typing now?
…
After finishing her writing, the system activated just in time.
Ding~ Jinjiang System Update Complete.
Version: v0.0.02
Mall Mode Unlocked: Each purchase deducts corresponding Luck Points.
Current Luck Points: 5/300
The Luck Point cap had increased, and there was a mall now. Gu Xi was thrilled, so much so that she didn’t notice Luo Ningshuang’s scrutinizing gaze.
But her excitement lasted only a moment. The cheapest item in the mall required 50 Luck Points.
This update was practically useless. Disappointed, Gu Xi asked, “System, besides the mall, are there any other features? Like adding stat points to characters, like in games?”
Ding~ The system has relayed your request to the Main God. The Main God has rejected it. Other worlds may allow this, but not in the End-of-Dharma world, as it’s too overpowered and violates the rules. Author Ji, you should be content—you already have one overpowered skill: drinking.
Gu Xi: So you’re saying the Main God can’t break the rules?
Ding~ Correct. Breaking the Milky Way’s laws would lead to destruction and restructuring. Loopholes can be exploited, but the Main God finds that too low-class.
Gu Xi: …So there are other Main Gods?
Ding~ Author Ji, your intelligence is concerning. Every world has different laws, so naturally, there are many Main Gods. This system’s Main God is the Jinjiang Main God.
Heh, sounds like this one’s the low-class one!
“Gu Xi, why are you zoning out? We’ve landed. Time to get off.” Luo Ningshuang called out several times. Seeing Gu Xi still lost in thought, she spoke coldly.
“Huh? Oh!” Gu Xi snapped back to reality and glanced at her. Seeing the suspicion in Luo Ningshuang’s eyes, she broke out in a cold sweat. How could her dumb brain forget there was someone right next to her?
Gu Xi got off the plane first, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Luo Ningshuang’s gaze was glued to her back. She sneakily glanced back.
“What are you looking at? Keep moving!” Luo Ningshuang saw Gu Xi shrink back like a startled turtle and burst out laughing.
“Darling, I’m here to pick you up!”
Gu Xi followed the voice and saw a woman with striking features, a curvaceous figure, and a dress that accentuated her tall frame, made even taller by high heels. Her golden hair, unusual for Z Country, made her stand out like a crane among chickens.
Clarice strutted toward Luo Ningshuang with a “click-clack” of her heels. Gu Xi watched, thinking that with a bit more force, those thin heels might snap in half.
“Clarice, why are you here?” Luo Ningshuang looked displeased and sidestepped her attempt at a hug.
Clarice’s eyes filled with grievance, catching Gu Xi’s attention. Being a homebody surrounded by Z Country locals, seeing such a stunning and charismatic foreigner naturally piqued her curiosity, and she stared a bit longer.
Luo Ningshuang caught Gu Xi’s ogling and promptly stomped on her foot.
“Ow!” Gu Xi clutched her foot, hopping in place, looking utterly comical.
She didn’t know what had gotten into Luo Ningshuang, but she was grateful Luo didn’t often wear heels due to her height. Otherwise, Gu Xi was sure her foot would have a hole in it.
Because of the stomp, Clarice noticed Gu Xi. Pointing at her, she fumed, “It’s you… Just you wait… I’ll take you down!”
Her loud voice drew incredulous stares from everyone around. Rumor had it foreigners were quite passionate, and they felt sorry for the girl she was targeting.
Luo Ningshuang’s face darkened as she stepped forward to drag Clarice away, but Gu Xi pointed at Clarice and said, “So it was you that day!”
Oh~ The crowd pieced it together—they had history!
Luo Ningshuang’s face stiffened, her aura turning as cold as a winter storm, keeping everyone at a distance.
“It was me! Do you dare to face me one-on-one?” Clarice said, puffing out her chest with an air of arrogance.
Oh~ The crowd pieced together more—such drama!
Luo Ningshuang stepped between them, her patience at its limit, her voice like a volcano about to erupt. “Shut up. We’re leaving.”
Oh~ The crowd pieced together again—a love triangle!
“Oh~”
Gu Xi obediently followed Luo Ningshuang, occasionally glancing at Clarice until a glare made her look away.
At that moment, Gu Xi received a message from her friend. Opening it, she read:
Friend: I’ve arrived. I’m staying at XX Hotel.
Gu Xi: Got it. I just got back too. Let’s rest for now, and I’ll come find you tomorrow.
Friend: Sounds good!
Distracted by texting, Gu Xi didn’t notice Luo Ningshuang had stopped and walked straight into her with a “thud.”
“Ouch, I’m cursed today!” Gu Xi rubbed her forehead. All she did was fail to update a new chapter on time.
“You idiot, don’t you watch where you’re going? What if you hurt my darling?” Clarice stepped forward, rubbing Luo Ningshuang’s back where Gu Xi had bumped into her, not forgetting to scold her.
“Enough. Get in the car.” Luo Ningshuang said, stepping away from Clarice and opening the front car door.
Clarice pouted but got in. As soon as she sat, she sensed something was off and tried to get out, but Luo Ningshuang slammed the door shut with a “bang,” nearly hitting her prominent nose.
Gu Xi followed Luo Ningshuang to the back seat. Seeing Clarice’s aggrieved expression, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t cry, darling. When we get back, we’ll have a 300-round battle, and all your anger will vanish…”
Clarice, seeing Gu Xi’s challenge, perked up. She wasn’t going to lose.
Luo Ningshuang: “…”
She was so tired!
