Addicted after marriage - Chapter 15
By noon, the office cafeteria was packed.
Luo Shu called Shen Yan, asking to make an appointment with Yu Zhan.
Shen Yan told her to come up directly,
so she took the elevator straight to the top floor the president’s office.
Yu Zhan didn’t even look up from his computer when she entered.
His face, as always, was unreadable.
But today, he was wearing a crisp white shirt under a dark vest,
and somehow he looked even more composed, more magnetic.
Was that… the shirt she’d ordered for him?
Luo Shu walked straight up to his desk and set a paper bag down.
Here’s your shirt. Thanks.
He finally looked up, his eyes shifting from the bag to her. Not feeling well?
A little…
The memory of last night’s awkward conversation still lingered between them.
She quickly added, If there’s nothing else, I’ll go.
He gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment and turned back to his screen.
By the afternoon, the dizziness and nausea had gotten worse.
Luo Shu took the rest of the day off and went to the hospital.
There were so many people waiting that she dozed off in her chair.
When her name was finally called, she jolted awake and stumbled inside.
After she briefly explained her symptoms, the doctor began the routine questions.
Name.
Luo Shu.
Age.
Twenty-two.
Had intercourse last month?
Her heart skipped. Yes, but I took medicine.
The doctor gave a professional smile. The pills are only about ninety percent effective.
There’s still a small chance. Let’s do an ultrasound to be sure.
Cold sweat broke out along her forehead. So that pill wasn’t foolproof after all?
Her fingers gripped the edge of her dress as she nodded,
dazed, and left the consultation room with the test order in hand.
Her vision blurred for a second. Memories of her mother surfaced
the way she’d struggled to raise her alone after being
abandoned by a man who promised the world and delivered nothing.
Walking down the quiet hospital corridor, Luo Shu stared at the order sheet in her hands,
her stomach twisting. If the results showed a baby,
she was finished. She was only twenty-two.
She hadn’t even figured her own life out yet.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but her nerves only tightened.
She thought about messaging Yu Zhan, then remembered he’d blacklisted her.
Even if she called, the great CEO probably wouldn’t answer.
The thought made her throat burn.
She bit her lip hard, fighting the urge to cry.
That was when she spotted a familiar figure walking toward her.
Liao Xian.
It had been barely three months since the woman’s pregnancy,
but she already carried herself with the delicate posture of an expectant mother.
A middle-aged maid followed beside her, arms full of shopping bags and supplements,
fussing over every step.
Luo Shu froze.
Liao Xian’s eyes flicked to the ultrasound form in Luo Shu’s hand,
and a mocking smile curved her lips. You’re here for a checkup too?
Her face was pale, the dark circles under her eyes heavy.
The glamorous, confident woman she used to be was gone.
Liao Xian, Luo Shu murmured, instinctively folding the paper and hiding it behind her back.
You’ve got some nerve, Liao Xian hissed, jaw tight.
Why are you so angry? Luo Shu asked coolly, though she already knew the answer.
Seeing her like this should’ve felt satisfying, but strangely,
Luo Shu only felt a pang of pity. She had lost a scumbag boyfriend
but Liao Xian had lost her husband and the father of her child.
In the end, Luo Shu was the lucky one.
Liao Xian’s tears spilled down her cheeks.
Now that the Qin and Liao families’ engagement is broken,
you must be thrilled, aren’t you? Qin Heng loved you,
but I’m the one who got pregnant. You just couldn’t stand it, could you?
You wanted revenge! Tell me I’m wrong!
Luo Shu didn’t deny it but her voice was steady.
What you and Qin Heng did has nothing to do with me.
I kept silent. It was your uncle who spread those rumors, not me.
She took a step closer.
If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for being careless.
The Qin-Liao marriage was never about love.
You were terrified I’d steal him, so you did something foolish.
Honestly, you brought it on yourself.
You!
Liao Xian’s face twisted with rage. You’re just a fatherless brat!
Who are you to lecture me?
The words sliced through the air.
For a moment, Luo Shu couldn’t move.
Once, they’d been close enough to share secrets till dawn. And now this.
She stayed silent, eyes down.
The hospital’s announcement system broke the tension,
calling her name again and again. Luo Shu exhaled shakily.
She didn’t want to make a scene. Too many people were staring already.
Liao Xian, let’s just stop this, she said quietly, trying to leave.
But Liao Xian stepped in front of her.
You broke up with Qin Heng less than a month ago.
Don’t tell me you’re pregnant with some other man’s baby? Who’s the lucky bastard?
Liao Xian, show some respect! Luo Shu snapped.
She was trying so hard to stay calm, but fury burned under her skin.
If the other woman weren’t pregnant, she might’ve slapped her already.
Why so defensive, Luo Shu? Liao Xian sneered,
suddenly lunging forward to snatch the paper from Luo Shu’s hand.
Give that back!
Luo Shu tried to grab it, but the maid blocked her.
Got it, Liao Xian whispered triumphantly, eyes scanning the form. So it’s true.
Luo Shu’s face flushed red, her nose stinging.
All her life, people had mocked her as the fatherless child,
but Liao Xian her supposed best friend had always defended her.
To hear the same cruelty from her now was unbearable.
Liao Xian laughed softly. You know why I always protected you all those years?
Luo Shu looked up, her heart sinking.
Because Qin Heng liked you. And I liked Qin Heng.
I had to act like the kindest, sweetest girl in front of him.
Everyone said I was compassionate, generous, and he started to believe it.
But inside, I hated you. I’ve always hated you!
Luo Shu felt like the world was spinning.
So all of it—the friendship, the care, the smile had been a lie.
Her boyfriend was a fraud. Her best friend was a fraud.
How ironic.
Tears welled in her eyes, falling before she could stop them.
Give me the paper, she said slowly, each word shaking but firm.
Tell me who the man is, and I’ll give it back.
Liao Xian pulled her maid aside and stepped closer.
Luo Shu wasn’t stupid. She wouldn’t take the bait.
If she said it was Yu Zhan, Liao Xian would never believe her and even if she did,
she’d only use it to humiliate her further.
Besides, Yu Zhan had already cut her off.
Even if she spoke his name, he’d never stand up for her.
Give it back!
She lunged for the form. Liao Xian’s hand flew instead
Smack!
The slap echoed down the corridor.
The busy hospital seemed to fall silent,
the noise fading to nothing but the tinny voice from the
overhead speaker still calling Luo Shu’s name.
Her cheek burned. She didn’t want revenge,
didn’t want another word just her form back.
She reached out again, and this time, when Liao Xian raised her hand to strike again,
a large hand caught her wrist midair.
