Chapter 51: The Confrontation and the Escape
The assistant to Dong Aoyu was nowhere to be found, and a strange silence had fallen over the area as if planned. Through the iron railing in front of her, Zhu Qingluo could barely make out the silhouette of the person standing opposite Dong Aoyu—a figure wearing a silver fox mask. The person was tall and slender, with graceful, long limbs and a formal black uniform that radiated an oppressive air.
Zhu Qingluo was immediately on high alert. She had made a point of knowing everyone at the event, yet this person had appeared out of nowhere. A sense of repulsion rose in her.
The “Fox” was even taller than Dong Aoyu. “No,” the Fox said, their voice low and indistinct. A pair of long, dark eyes peered through the mask, their gaze chillingly familiar to Zhu Qingluo. She gasped, thinking she must be mistaken.
Dong Aoyu’s face went dark. “How is that possible? What good are you? You can’t even handle this one small thing!”
The Fox explained that there was a “small accident” while retrieving the item, but the matter was being resolved. Zhu Qingluo decided this was her cue to leave, but as she turned, she heard Dong Aoyu’s angry order: “You, go now. Tell the manager to hand over the item in ten minutes.”
The Fox stood still, their eyes under the mask showing a mocking defiance. Enraged, Dong Aoyu lunged forward, her fist raised. Zhu Qingluo held her breath, but the next thing she heard was Dong Aoyu’s scream.
“Aaaah!”
Zhu Qingluo’s heart sank. She didn’t leave, compelled to see what was happening. What she witnessed was terrifying. Dong Aoyu’s arm was twisted at an unnatural angle, frozen in mid-air. “How dare you… lay a hand on me! You low-level nobody, do you want to get fired?!” she screamed.
The “Fox” laughed softly, their voice cold and hypnotic. “Fool.”
“You… you are…” Dong Aoyu’s expression froze. She recognized the voice. “Jiang Yun!” she shrieked.
In an instant, Jiang Yun kicked Dong Aoyu to the ground. The neutralized arm now felt numb. Dong Aoyu scrambled backward, not caring about the dust, and saw her actual unconscious assistant behind a pillar. Her nemesis had replaced her own subordinate.
“You’re so treacherous! You went to all this trouble just to steal my treasure,” Dong Aoyu said, recovering her usual arrogance. “I’m never going to give it to you.”
Jiang Yun stood over her, looking down. “Did you touch her with that hand?” she asked, her voice low and dangerous.
Dong Aoyu was momentarily confused. Then, Jiang Yun produced a bottle of red wine, uncorked it, and sniffed it. “Wait…” Dong Aoyu stammered, frantically trying to remember who Jiang Yun could be referring to. A thought flashed in her mind, and she saw Zhu Qingluo’s calm face at the edge of her vision.
It was her!
With a chilling laugh, Jiang Yun poured the entire bottle of red wine over Dong Aoyu’s head. “Do you like to drink so much? Then have some more.”
Dong Aoyu, soaking and shivering on the floor, asked in a raspy voice, “Is she your person?”
Jiang Yun’s silence was an arrogant confirmation. Dong Aoyu laughed maliciously. “Don’t be so sure. You better hurry, or you’ll regret it.”
Jiang Yun’s gaze sharpened, and she whirled around to stare at the railing where Zhu Qingluo had been. But the area was silent and empty, as if no one had ever been there.
…
A Dangerous Proposition
Zhu Qingluo, who had been hiding outside the building, wrapped her coat tighter. The night wind was growing colder. She had sent a message to Assistant Wu, who was still busy. Her anxiety was rising. Although her escape to Yu City had seemed smooth, everything felt suspicious, especially after seeing Jiang Yun. Once she recognized Jiang Yun’s voice, she had made a swift decision to flee. She assumed Jiang Yun’s presence was about the “Moon Soul” item, but a chilling doubt lingered. What if she was here for her?
Zhu Qingluo decided she couldn’t stay in Yu City any longer. She had to leave now and get as far away from Jiang Yun as possible.
About twenty minutes later, she saw Xie Ke walking out of the venue. There was no avoiding her. Xie Ke, who had failed to secure the “Moon Soul,” was in a frantic mood, but her attitude toward Zhu Qingluo had shifted dramatically.
“Where are you going?” Xie Ke asked, her voice surprisingly pleasant.
“Back to the hotel,” Zhu Qingluo said simply.
Xie Ke took a deep breath. “Miss Zhu, I was impulsive earlier. Please don’t take my words to heart. This is a very busy time.” She came closer, looking at Zhu Qingluo with a probing expression. “I won’t tell anyone you want to leave Yu City… but I’m not at ease with you traveling alone. How about I give you a ride?”
Zhu Qingluo saw through her false concern and used Xie Ke’s own words against her. “Director Xie said before that I was too much trouble for her.”
The comeback was so fast that Xie Ke’s smile froze. “That was just a joke. We’re family. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“Family?” Zhu Qingluo laughed to herself. “But our families are still separate. Or are you willing to give up your background to become a part of the Jiang family?”
A flash of ruthless ambition crossed Xie Ke’s face—a desire to replace Jiang Yun. But it was gone in an instant.
Just then, a business car pulled up. Xie Ke placed her hand on the back of Zhu Qingluo’s wheelchair, her fingers tightening. “Miss Zhu, shall we leave now?” she asked.
Zhu Qingluo realized Assistant Wu wasn’t coming tonight. She had to rely on Xie Ke. She could feel Xie Ke’s barely hidden intentions—she wanted Zhu Qingluo out of Jiang Yun’s life. This was a risk, but it was one she could exploit.
“Then I’ll have to trouble you,” Zhu Qingluo said, her voice flat.
Xie Ke pushed her forward, opened the car door herself, and ushered her in with a fake air of hospitality.
