Chapter 61: The Cold, Hard Truth
As the words left her lips, Professor Shen watched for a reaction from Jiang Yun. Jiang Yun slowly turned her head and looked at her with a piercing stare, devoid of any emotion. “You remember him, don’t you? The man who kidnapped you from the ocean. Don’t be afraid. I just want you to forget.”
“It was you…” Jiang Yun’s eyes focused, and a cold, murderous word escaped her lips.
Shen smiled. “You guessed it, but it’s not what you think.” The shipwreck had been an accident, and she didn’t know Jiang Yun had been kidnapped. It was by chance that she acquired an experimental sample from the kidnappers. The criminals hadn’t intended to kill Jiang Yun. They were after her rare S-tier Alpha genes, which were highly sought after on the black market. The bl00d sample they took eventually made its way to Shen.
When she realized it was Jiang Yun’s, she didn’t stop her research. She knew that if her experiment succeeded, she could change the world. She would give people the power to choose their own genetic makeup. “The scar is still there, isn’t it?” Shen said, her gaze fixed on Jiang Yun’s neck. Jiang Yun’s face hardened with hatred. A deep, cold anger surged within her. The scar on her neck throbbed. She remembered the moment the criminals took her bl00d and injected a strange serum into her. The pain was a part of Shen’s experiment.
Shen reached out, her fingers trembling. “I warned you,” she said, “not to blindly pursue healing technologies. But you lied to me. You were even ambitious enough to expand the pheromone therapy industry.” If she had let Jiang Yun continue, she would have discovered the truth. Shen would have lost Jiang Yun, her reputation, and her research.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the basement. A water bucket had been knocked over. Shen was on high alert. “Who’s there?” she shouted. There was no answer. She realized her guards were gone and that Dong Aoyu wasn’t answering her phone. A call came in. “Sorry, she can’t make it,” a cold voice said. It was Zhu Qingluo.
…
A Fight for Survival
On the deck of the cruise ship, a violent brawl had broken out. Zhu Qingluo had ambushed Dong Aoyu, and they were fighting. Dong Aoyu was furious. Zhu Qingluo kicked her in the stomach. Dong Aoyu doubled over, but her rage quickly overtook the pain. She lunged at Zhu Qingluo, her fists flying. Zhu Qingluo, still recovering, struggled to keep up. Dong Aoyu realized her weakness and began to mock her. “You’ve come to die. Don’t blame me for not holding back!”
The fight moved to the edge of the ship. The waves crashed against the railing. Dong Aoyu tried to push Zhu Qingluo into the water, but Zhu Qingluo twisted out of her grip. Dong Aoyu, pushed by her own momentum, went tumbling over the railing. There was a splash, and she was gone.
Zhu Qingluo stared at the empty water, her face pale. She caught her breath, then realized she hadn’t found Jiang Yun yet. She looked down at her hand. In her palm was a key, a key she had taken from Dong Aoyu during their struggle.
A loud gunshot rang out. Zhu Qingluo ran toward the sound. She found a door to the basement and cautiously opened it. The room was dimly lit. She saw a figure’s silhouette in front of her. It looked like Shen. Zhu Qingluo prepared herself for a confrontation, but then she saw the figure fall to the ground with a heavy thud.
Zhu Qingluo’s bl00d ran cold. She walked forward and saw Shen’s body. A single bullet had gone through her forehead. Her mouth was open, as if she had been trying to say something. The words, “I’m so… sorry,” were lost in the silence. Zhu Qingluo looked down and saw a drop of bl00d on her shoe. She realized Jiang Yun had done it.
…
A New Beginning
Zhu Qingluo followed a trail of bl00d and found Jiang Yun in a dark corner of the room, curled up with her knees to her chest. A black handgun lay on the floor next to her. Jiang Yun’s eyes were filled with a terrifying, feverish light. She looked up at Zhu Qingluo, a small, beautiful smile on her lips.
Zhu Qingluo felt a shock to her soul. She calmly walked toward her. “It’s okay,” she said. “I told you I’d come and get you.” Jiang Yun got up and hugged her. She buried her face in Zhu Qingluo’s chest, her body trembling with a sense of safety. Zhu Qingluo’s heart ached. She held her close, feeling a wave of relief that she was safe. She checked her for injuries, but there were none. The psychological damage from the drugs, however, was severe.
“Where are we going?” Jiang Yun asked, her voice muffled against Zhu Qingluo’s chest.
Zhu Qingluo paused. “I don’t know.” The cruise ship’s destination had been changed. The journey back would take three times as long.
“Let’s go to Luminara,” Jiang Yun said. She looked happy, as if she were a child telling a secret. “Auntie Xie told me that there’s a legend about a floating lighthouse where a goddess named Sera lives.”
Zhu Qingluo understood. Jiang Yun was looking for a sanctuary. She looked out the window. The sky was turning a soft blue, a new day dawning after a night of chaos. The Pearl sailed forward, slowly and with purpose. The journey was not over.
“Okay,” Zhu Qingluo said, gently holding her. “We’ll go to Luminara.”
