- Chapter 28 - "Like It's Going to Eat Me Up."
Although the clothes shopping was done, Ye Wenjin looked at the mountain of shopping bags and felt a bit overwhelmed.
She leaned in close to Jian Mo and whispered, “Sister, how are we going to carry all this? Will it even fit in the car?”
Jian Mo smiled. “We don’t have to carry it.”
Before Ye Wenjin could voice her confusion, a sales assistant approached them with a beaming smile. “Our esteemed guests needn’t worry. Our store provides delivery service. Just leave us your address, and we’ll have everything sent to your doorstep immediately.”
Ye Wenjin was taken aback—she hadn’t expected such a service.
After hesitating for a couple of seconds, she asked, “Then… do you deliver to the neighboring city as well?”
The sales assistant didn’t even blink, maintaining her calm demeanor. “Of course we do. Please rest assured, serving our valued guests is our duty.”
After all, it was all about sales performance—hesitating for even a second would be disrespectful to her targets!
Still, the sales assistant was a little curious. If these two lived in the neighboring city, why had they come all the way here to shop?
But such matters weren’t for her to pry into, so she merely kept her slight puzzlement to herself, maintaining a neutral expression as she waited for them to provide an address.
Ye Wenjin glanced at Jian Mo, as she didn’t know the villa’s exact address.
Jian Mo curled her lips slightly and handed over a business card. “Contact her. My surname is Jian.”
The sales assistant took it and noticed that the black card with gold embossing bore only the name Wu Mingyu and a contact number—nothing else.
Nodding, the sales assistant carefully put the card away. “Understood, Miss Jian.”
And so, the mountain of shopping bags was finally resolved.
Ye Wenjin also breathed a sigh of relief. She had just been wondering whether all these items would even fit in the car, never imagining that the store would offer home delivery.
But then again, it wasn’t surprising that this shop provided such a service. After all, the clientele who could afford to shop here were no ordinary people, and Jian Mo had bought so much at once—undoubtedly making her a VIP among VIPs.
As they were leaving, Ye Wenjin saw all the sales assistants in the store packing up the clothes they had purchased.
Looking at the endless array of new outfits, Ye Wenjin suddenly felt as if her breath had lightened, her expression momentarily dazed.
To her, these new clothes weren’t just new clothes—they felt more like Jian Mo’s salvation of her.
Only now did the shadows she had felt in her childhood truly vanish without a trace.
The clothes that hadn’t belonged to her had been left behind when she departed the Yin household, with only a handful taken along. But now, she had more clothes than she could ever wear.
It was hard to describe what she was feeling at this moment—Ye Wenjin didn’t even know how to put it into words.
She only felt a warmth swelling in her chest, an inexplicable emotion expanding within her, making her instinctively want to express it.
So much so that when she looked at Jian Mo beside her, she felt as if she…
Wanted to kiss her.
Ye Wenjin stared blankly, unconsciously swallowing.
Thus, when Jian Mo turned to look, what met her eyes was Ye Wenjin’s gaze—shimmering with tiny sparks, brimming with affection and longing.
Jian Mo paused, her expression turning meaningful. “Xiao Jin.”
Hearing the voice suddenly, Ye Wenjin snapped out of her daze and responded blankly, “What is it, Sister?”
Jian Mo looked at her with eyes full of amusement. “Good Xiao Jin, tell me—what were you just thinking about?”
Her voice was soft, yet filled with a tempting allure.
Upon hearing it, Ye Wenjin couldn’t help but recall what she had just been thinking about.
And as she did, heat surged uncontrollably, instantly flushing her cheeks.
Unable to meet Jian Mo’s gaze, Ye Wenjin instinctively shook her head and muttered that it was nothing.
But Jian Mo didn’t believe her. She murmured softly, “Oh? Really nothing? But the way Xiao Jin was looking at me just now… as if you wanted to devour me.”
Ye Wenjin’s face burned even hotter. She glanced around nervously, afraid someone might overhear.
Even though Jian Mo’s voice was low, it rang like thunder in her ears. And Jian Mo was still smiling at her—smiling so much that Ye Wenjin felt steam rising from the top of her head.
Unable to take it anymore, Ye Wenjin grabbed Jian Mo’s hand and hurriedly pulled her away from the crowded mall. She didn’t know where she was going, but anywhere was better than staying in such a public place.
Jian Mo didn’t resist, letting herself be led along.
The crowd around them gradually thinned, but Ye Wenjin didn’t notice, blindly dragging Jian Mo forward until she abruptly pushed open a fire exit.
Bang—
A loud slam echoed, followed by complete silence.
Ye Wenjin snapped out of her daze, finally stopping as she realized where she had taken Jian Mo.
The emergency stairwell was empty, and once the door closed, the silence was absolute. Now, there truly wasn’t a single soul around.
Ye Wenjin froze. Her intention had been to find a less crowded place, but somehow, she had ended up here—somewhere not just quiet, but completely deserted.
Gulp—
She swallowed hard before slowly turning her head, meeting Jian Mo’s amused and knowing gaze.
“So eager, Xiao Jin?”
Ye Wenjin’s heart skipped a beat. Flustered, she tried to explain, but the words tangled on her tongue.
“N-No, I… ah… I didn’t… Sister, I just…”
Stammering incoherently, she grew increasingly frustrated. The more she tried to explain, the less she could speak.
Mainly because she didn’t even know why she had brought Jian Mo to this secluded place. And given the current situation, no matter how she explained it, it seemed… suspicious.
Ye Wenjin faltered.
Then, under Jian Mo’s patient gaze, she slowly lowered her head and mumbled an apology, “Sorry, Sister… I just wanted somewhere with fewer people.”
Jian Mo chuckled. “This place certainly fits.”
Ye Wenjin fidgeted awkwardly with her fingers.
But then Jian Mo took a step forward, closing the distance between them.
Caught off guard, Ye Wenjin’s breath hitched, her eyes widening slightly.
“Sister…?”
Jian Mo didn’t stop. They drew closer and closer until Ye Wenjin could almost feel her soft exhales.
“Xiao Jin,” Jian Mo murmured again, “what were you thinking about earlier?”
Ye Wenjin’s face burned crimson. She instinctively wanted to say she hadn’t been thinking anything, but when she met Jian Mo’s gaze, the words that slipped out were—
“I was thinking… I really wanted to kiss you, Sister.”
Jian Mo laughed softly. “Such honesty deserves a reward, don’t you think?”
Before regret could even surface, Ye Wenjin’s eyes slowly brightened. “Sister?”
Jian Mo didn’t answer. She simply looked at her, luring her in, her red lips parting slightly.
Ye Wenjin nervously pursed her lips, yet her eyes remained fixed on Jian Mo’s lips. Then, murmuring an apology, she leaned in without hesitation and kissed her.
This kiss had nothing to do with desire, yet it was utterly lingering.
The quiet fire escape stairwell was soon filled only with the soft, wet sounds of their kiss, thick with intimacy.
When the kiss ended, Ye Wenjin finally released the hand that had somehow found its way to cradle the back of Jian Mo’s head.
Her gaze lowered to Jian Mo’s lips, eyes hazy, fingers lightly tracing them as she murmured in a slightly hoarse voice, “Sister, your lipstick is smudged.”
Jian Mo curved her lips in amusement. “Then Xiao Jin can help me touch it up, okay?”
Ye Wenjin’s eyes lingered on those lips—the ones she had just marked.
They had kissed so fiercely.
A sudden shyness overtook her, and she nodded softly. “O-okay, I’ll help Sister fix it.”
As she spoke, Ye Wenjin instinctively pulled out her own lip tint. The shade she carried was far bolder than the one Jian Mo usually wore—a deep cherry red.
Only after the first stroke had already touched Jian Mo’s lips did Ye Wenjin realize she was using her own.
Her hand paused mid-application, and she froze for two full seconds before stammering, “Sister… I’m sorry, I forgot to ask. This is the one I carry with me. Should I wipe it off and use yours instead?”
Jian Mo arched a brow slightly, her tone gentle as she asked, “Can’t I use Xiao Jin’s lip tint?”
Ye Wenjin shook her head vigorously. “Of course you can! I just… I was afraid you might not be used to this shade.”
Jian Mo smiled. “It’s fine. I’d like to try the color you like. Later, I’ll help you apply mine, okay?”
Ye Wenjin’s hand trembled slightly, but she nodded with forced composure. “O-of course.”
So she carefully and meticulously applied her own lip tint to Jian Mo’s lips. However, since Jian Mo usually preferred subtler shades, she kept the application light—just a thin layer.
Yet cherry red was an overpowering color; even a thin layer was far more vibrant than Jian Mo’s usual lipstick.
When she finished, Ye Wenjin looked at her and found, to her surprise, that the shade suited Jian Mo perfectly. The change in lip color brought out a different aura, giving her an uncharacteristically striking presence.
Then, Jian Mo applied her usual lipstick to Ye Wenjin. Her preference leaned toward understated elegance, so even her lipstick was a soft, barely-there shade—once applied, it looked almost like her natural lip color.
They had exchanged each other’s lip colors.
By the time they left the fire escape, Ye Wenjin could hardly suppress the heat in her cheeks.
Especially when passing mirrors—her gaze kept drifting to their reflections, lingering on their lips before snapping away as if burned.
Jian Mo noticed but pretended not to see her little reactions, though amusement flickered in her eyes.
The two strolled through the mall like any ordinary couple, casually browsing through various stores.
Most of the time, they bought nothing—just wandered in, looked around, and moved on to the next shop.
At first, when they entered a store, Jian Mo, thinking Ye Wenjin liked what she was looking at, nearly bought everything she had glanced at—until Ye Wenjin noticed and stopped her in time.
After quickly pulling her out of the store, Ye Wenjin whispered, “Sister, I really was just looking. Don’t you think this is fun?”
Jian Mo thought for two seconds but failed to see the fun in it.
Her usual principle was to buy whatever caught her eye. She didn’t understand the point of simply looking without purchasing anything.
But Ye Wenjin seemed genuinely happy—she appeared to love sharing.
Under her guidance, Jian Mo discovered many interesting little trinkets—some beautiful, some amusing, some quirky.
These were things she would never have spared a glance for before. Yet, because Ye Wenjin eagerly shared them with her, she began to notice.
At first, she thought Ye Wenjin wanted them, but it turned out she wasn’t interested in buying everything. She simply found joy in the experience.
Jian Mo didn’t fully grasp what exactly Ye Wenjin found so delightful, but she seemed to find meaning in the way Ye Wenjin so naturally shared her discoveries.
So she started trying to understand, willingly accompanying Ye Wenjin in uncovering these little curiosities.
Eventually, she stopped insisting on buying everything Ye Wenjin looked at. Instead, when she spotted something interesting, she would point it out to her as well.
Noticing the change in Jian Mo, Ye Wenjin’s eyes curved into crescents.
The two wandered leisurely like this until noon, stopping for lunch before driving to the theater.
The performance started at two in the afternoon, so after lunch, the timing was just right.
By the time they arrived, ticket checks had already begun. The line was long, but as VIP seat holders, they could bypass the crowd and enter through the VIP channel.
Following their ticket numbers, they found their seats. Ye Wenjin carefully wiped them down before letting Jian Mo sit.
Jian Mo smiled and squeezed her hand. “Xiao Jin is so thoughtful.”
Ye Wenjin gave a bashful smile. Just as she was about to sit, a familiar voice came from beside them. Turning, she saw Rong Yunshu staring at her in surprise.
“It really is you, Wenjin! I thought I was mistaken.”
As Rong Yunshu spoke, her gaze flickered briefly to the figure beside Ye Wenjin before she quickly curved her lips. “Hello… Wenjin’s Sister.”
Ye Wenjin: “!”
