- Chapter 6 - Jian Mo's Preferences
The meal was served right in their hotel room. Ye Wenjin had initially thought they would go out to eat, but to her surprise, Jian Mo had arranged for the food to be delivered instead.
This came as a relief to her. Since the two of them weren’t yet familiar with each other, going out for a meal together would have made her feel uneasy.
Besides, the hotel’s dining area was likely crowded. If she were to appear in public with Jian Mo…
Ye Wenjin recoiled at the thought. Even though Jian Mo had accepted her proposal, she still believed she wasn’t worthy of her. Being seen together would undoubtedly invite gossip, and she didn’t want to subject Jian Mo to that.
Fortunately, they stayed in. The tension in Ye Wenjin’s chest gradually eased.
However…
Now that they were alone in the same room, the relief she had felt slowly gave way to nervousness again.
The atmosphere was too quiet as they ate, neither of them speaking.
Ye Wenjin occasionally stole glances at Jian Mo, whose expression remained composed as she ate—slow, deliberate, methodical. But… she seemed a little picky.
Ye Wenjin noticed the moment Jian Mo’s chopsticks accidentally touched some cilantro. Though her expression didn’t change, her delicate brows furrowed slightly before she calmly withdrew her chopsticks and wiped them with a napkin.
It seemed she detested it so much that even the slightest contact was unbearable.
Ye Wenjin quietly observed, trying to learn more about Jian Mo’s preferences.
By the end of the meal, she had gathered that Jian Mo disliked anything with a strong or pungent taste—cilantro, scallions, and the like.
Her preferences, on the other hand, were clear: she favored mild flavors and apparently couldn’t handle spicy food.
Ye Wenjin took mental notes.
Twenty minutes later, the meal concluded, and as promised, Jian Mo prepared to take Ye Wenjin back.
As the scenery outside the car window blurred past, Ye Wenjin debated whether she should return to the Yin household.
Weekends were supposed to be for rest, but Yin Yu rarely took breaks. She was always busy at the company, often bringing Yin Feifei along. After all, Yin Feifei was her heir, and competence was naturally the top priority.
If Yin Feifei proved too incompetent, the company’s shareholders would be the first to object.
Of course, it was also possible that the shareholders preferred an heir who was easier to control.
But none of that concerned Ye Wenjin. After some thought, she decided returning to the Yin household now was too risky.
Flashes of last night’s events replayed in her mind. Ye Wenjin was certain Yin Feifei had been involved—otherwise, she wouldn’t have tried to take her away upon hearing she was unwell.
As for Yin Yu…
At the time, it had been hard to say, but now, things might be different.
So Ye Wenjin ultimately decided against going back. She glanced at the silent Jian Mo beside her, hesitation flickering across her face.
“What is it?”
Jian Mo’s sudden question startled her, but once she processed the words, Ye Wenjin nervously fidgeted with her fingers before murmuring, “I… don’t want to go back to the Yin household right now.”
Jian Mo didn’t ask why. She simply nodded. “Alright.”
Ye Wenjin fidgeted, opening her mouth to explain but finding no words. In the end, she stayed silent.
However, she noticed the driver had adjusted the route—they were now heading toward her university. A wave of relief washed over her.
Returning to the Yin household now was definitely a bad idea. At school, surrounded by people, she would at least be safer than at the Yins’ place.
Although she suspected Yin Feifei was involved, Ye Wenjin couldn’t figure out when exactly the drug had been administered. Moreover, the drink had been handed to her by a waiter at Mrs. Lin’s indication—could Mrs. Lin have been the one who spiked it?
That didn’t make much sense.
Ye Wenjin didn’t know the truth, but she knew one thing for certain.
From now on, she had no family.
She used to be naive, believing that Ye Shuyao still loved her, that Yin Yu and Yin Feifei might dislike her but wouldn’t harm her. She had clung to the hope that as long as she stayed out of trouble, things would be fine.
But not anymore.
Ye Wenjin lowered her gaze, her expression subdued, and thus failed to notice the gaze fixed on her from beside her.
The car was silent, the atmosphere heavy.
The driver glanced at the two through the rearview mirror but quickly averted his eyes, not daring to look again.
Something felt off.
Still, his employer’s affairs were none of his business—best not to meddle.
The car arrived at the school gates in silence, and Ye Wenjin finally exhaled in relief.
Sharing a confined space with Jian Mo was too much for her, especially since both of them still carried traces of each other’s pheromones, mingling indistinguishably—an unbearably intimate sensation.
Her melancholy didn’t last long before the lingering scent of Jian Mo’s pheromones tugged at her awareness. Though Ye Wenjin told herself not to dwell on it, her thoughts kept straying, involuntarily drawn to Jian Mo.
Just the thought that the other woman still carried traces of her pheromones made Ye Wenjin’s emotions twist strangely—flustered yet restraining herself, afraid of seeming intrusive.
Fortunately, Jian Mo remained silent the entire time, as still as a jade statue, barely betraying any emotion.
After murmuring a quiet goodbye to Jian Mo, Ye Wenjin finally stepped out of the car. Watching the vehicle drive away, she turned to head back to her dorm—only to find Rong Yunshu standing behind her.
“Yunshu? What are you doing at the school gate?”
Rong Yunshu glanced at the departing car, smiling gently. “I was just coming back from outside and saw you getting out of the car. Thought it looked familiar, so I came over—and it really was you. By the way, didn’t your aunt say you had a cold? Are you better now?”
Ye Wenjin’s smile stiffened slightly, but she nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine now.”
Rong Yunshu caught something in her expression but held back from asking.
A shadow flickered in her eyes, but she said nothing more, simply linking arms with Ye Wenjin. “Let’s go back to the dorm together. You’re back just in time—you’re in for a treat.”
Ye Wenjin instinctively tensed at the contact but was distracted by her words, a glimmer of delight in her eyes. “Did your mom make walnut cookies again?”
Rong Yunshu grinned and nodded. “Bingo. As a reward, you can have an extra piece later.”
Ye Wenjin brightened, but then, remembering her diet, her smile dimmed. “I’ll just have a small taste.”
Rong Yunshu’s smile faltered briefly before she shrugged casually. “Right, I forgot you’re watching your weight. What a shame.”
Ye Wenjin agreed—Rong Yunshu’s mother’s walnut cookies were truly delicious!
Every time Rong Yunshu brought them, she couldn’t resist eating two, only to feel guilty afterward and rush to the dance studio to burn off the calories for forty minutes.
However, she needed to maintain a lean weight recently, so she could only take a small bite of the walnut pastry.
She thought with some regret.
Returning to the dorm, Ye Wenjin was surprised to find both of her roommates present.
Chu Yunsheng always went home every weekend, yet this week she hadn’t left. And Zhou Wuhua, who was usually buried in the library, grinding away at her studies, was rarely in the dorm. Today was an unusual gathering.
As soon as Ye Wenjin appeared, everyone turned to look at her.
Hearing the door open, Chu Yunsheng poked her head out from her bed. “Wenjin? You’re back? Did you recover from your cold?”
Ye Wenjin nodded with a faint smile but didn’t elaborate.
Seeing her nod, Zhou Wuhua averted her gaze.
Rong Yunshu, who had been walking behind her, initially looked up to say something but was immediately startled when she noticed the scent patch on the back of Ye Wenjin’s neck. In her shock, she blurted out without thinking, “Wenjin? Is that a scent patch on your neck? Did you undergo secondary differentiation?”
Her tone was unmistakably excited, instantly drawing the attention of the other two.
Chu Yunsheng’s eyes widened as she rolled off her bed. “What? You had a secondary differentiation? Into what? Alpha or Omega?”
She was genuinely stunned. Typically, after secondary differentiation, Alphas didn’t need scent patches—only Omegas did, to prevent their pheromones from triggering compatible Alphas into a rut.
And now, Ye Wenjin was wearing a scent patch!
Before Ye Wenjin could even speak, Chu Yunsheng gasped, “Wenjin, you turned into an Omega! Does that mean you’ll have to move out?! No way!”
Ye Wenjin: “…”
Though she was touched by their reluctance to see her go, couldn’t they at least let her finish?
One of them was lost in thought, while the other kept rambling excitedly. Ye Wenjin felt her headache returning.
If Zhou Wuhua hadn’t finally had enough and manually silenced Chu Yunsheng, the commotion might have lasted even longer.
Finally able to explain, Ye Wenjin said calmly, “Relax, I did undergo secondary differentiation—but as an Alpha. Don’t worry, I won’t be moving out.”
Her brief, clear answer resolved everyone’s confusion.
Chu Yunsheng exhaled in relief. “Good, good. If you left, we’d have to get a new roommate, and that would be so awkward.”
Ye Wenjin chuckled. “Don’t worry, I’ll probably—”
She had been about to say she’d likely stay until graduation, but then a sudden thought crossed her mind.
If she married Jian Mo, would they live together?
Once the idea took hold, the lingering memories of last night’s intimate moments flashed through her mind. Ye Wenjin trailed off, her face slowly turning red.
Chu Yunsheng: “?”
Zhou Wuhua: “??”
Both stared at her in confusion, unsure why she had suddenly become flustered.
Chu Yunsheng blinked, instinctively turning to discuss this with someone—only to see Rong Yunshu’s expressionless face.
“What the—? What’s wrong with you? I didn’t do anything to you!”
Chu Yunsheng initially thought she had offended this elder sister, but to her surprise, Rong Yunshu was acting very unusually today—she didn’t even bicker with her!
Something was off—extremely off!
Chu Yunsheng gazed at her thoughtfully, only to see Rong Yunshu glance back with an indifferent expression.
Though it was embarrassing to admit, she really was a little scared.
Chu Yunsheng paused, then subtly edged closer to Zhou Wushang for cover.
Zhou Wushang slowly looked between her and Rong Yunshu, adjusted her glasses, and said nothing—but shielded Chu Yunsheng almost imperceptibly.
Ye Wenjin remained completely oblivious to the undercurrents between the three, still lost in her own thoughts.
But no matter how much she turned it over in her mind, she couldn’t shake the idea that living with Jian Mo was just too thrilling. Taking a deep breath, she suppressed those thoughts for now, deciding not to dwell on the possibility.
Yet every shift in her expression was keenly observed by Rong Yunshu.
She averted her gaze, lowering her eyes.
How could… she be an Alpha?
