- Chapter 7 - "Oh, Little Liar."
Although living with Jian Mo felt incredibly thrilling, Ye Wenjin suddenly realized something.
There were only four of them in the dorm, so anything happening to one would likely be noticed by the others.
But her marriage to Jian Mo…
Wasn’t this something better kept quiet?
If others found out, might it cause trouble for Jian Mo?
With this thought, Ye Wenjin instinctively wanted to keep it secret.
It made sense—she was just a college student. If not for the chance encounter with Jian Mo, their paths would never have crossed.
Jian Mo was successful in her career, with a background even better than the Yin family.
If news of their marriage got out, everyone would think she’d hit the jackpot.
The inevitable gossip wouldn’t bother Ye Wenjin, but she worried it might affect Jian Mo.
Those who love to gossip wouldn’t care about the truth—something Ye Wenjin knew from personal experience.
Though… Jian Mo probably wouldn’t announce it either.
Ye Wenjin suddenly realized she knew nothing about Jian Mo’s thoughts on the matter.
Dazed for a moment, she honestly pulled her thoughts back. Whatever Jian Mo planned, she’d go along with it.
But just thinking about them getting their marriage certificate made Ye Wenjin’s face burn.
She shook her head, trying to dismiss these distracting thoughts, but her unusual demeanor was too obvious—anyone could tell something was on her mind.
The other three had stopped talking at some point and were all looking at Ye Wenjin.
Only when she noticed the unusual silence did Ye Wenjin realize all three pairs of eyes were fixed on her.
Blinking, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
Chu Yunsheng didn’t hesitate before asking, “You seem preoccupied.”
Then she paused before carefully adding, “Did something happen when you went home this time?”
With just the four of them in the dorm, after two years together, they’d all gained some understanding of each other’s family situations.
Both Chu Yunsheng and Rong Yunshu came from well-off families—it was clear they’d grown up surrounded by love.
Rong Yunshu’s mother often made small desserts or snacks for her to share with everyone in the dorm.
As for Chu Yunsheng—being called “Young Miss” by Rong Yunshu wasn’t for nothing.
She truly was from a wealthy family but fortunately lacked the spoiled tendencies, being quite easygoing—just a bit blunt and somewhat oblivious.
Compared to them, Zhou Wuhuan’s family was quite ordinary, but her parents still cared deeply about her.
Only Ye Wenjin—in two years as roommates, they’d heard almost nothing about her family. She’d arrived alone on registration day, and whenever family topics came up, Ye Wenjin usually remained silent.
She never discussed these matters, so over time they understood—her family situation probably wasn’t good.
Beyond that, Ye Wenjin rarely called home, and her family seldom called her either.
What convinced them Ye Wenjin’s family relationship was strained were the occasional overheard phone calls—the atmosphere always tense.
The person on the other end would talk incessantly while Ye Wenjin mostly stayed silent, speaking only briefly when she did.
Judging by all these signs, it likely wasn’t just “not good” but downright hostile.
Realizing this, the three had tacitly avoided prying, pretending not to notice, and maintained their usual interactions.
Ye Wenjin wasn’t oblivious to their kindness. Aside from silently feeling grateful in her heart, she would always help with whatever she could whenever they needed anything.
No wonder Rong Yunshu often called her a pushover.
Hearing Chu Yunsheng’s question now, Ye Wenjin was momentarily stunned—after all, they had never outright asked her before.
But sensing their concern, she immediately smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’m fine. Thank you.”
Chu Yunsheng had initially regretted asking, but seeing Ye Wenjin’s composed expression, she quickly dismissed her regret, her eyes still filled with worry. “Are you really okay?”
She still felt something must have happened because Ye Wenjin seemed off somehow.
Touched yet somewhat helpless, Ye Wenjin replied, “Really, I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
Only when they saw no trace of forced composure on her face did they finally relax a little.
Once the matter was brushed aside, the dorm atmosphere gradually returned to normal.
Zhou Wuhua tidied up and prepared to head to the library, while Chu Yunsheng yawned and got ready to catch up on sleep.
Only Rong Yunshu remained silent the entire time.
Noticing her unusual behavior, Ye Wenjin looked at her curiously. “Yunshu? What’s wrong?”
Rong Yunshu immediately forced a smile and shook her head. “Nothing. Oh, Wenjin, don’t forget to report your Alpha differentiation on Monday.”
Ye Wenjin suddenly remembered. “I almost forgot about that procedure. Thanks, Yunshu.”
Rong Yunshu shook her head and sat down, lost in thought.
Ye Wenjin finally let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Thankfully, the topic of her differentiation had diverted their attention—otherwise, it would’ve been hard to explain.
“Oh, one more thing, Wenjin. There’s an event on Monday. You probably haven’t checked the group chat yet, so don’t forget.”
Ye Wenjin blinked. “An event? On Monday?”
“Yeah, sort of a practical class.”
She reached for her phone to check, only to suddenly remember—it had been confiscated. She had nothing on her now.
How could she have forgotten?
No wonder today had been so quiet. Without her phone, it made sense that no one from the Yin family had called her.
She hadn’t reappeared all last night, and the engagement matter still hadn’t been settled. Yin Yu definitely wouldn’t let it go.
Ye Wenjin’s expression gradually darkened.
“What’s wrong? Where’s your phone?”
Rong Yunshu, who had been watching her closely, immediately noticed the shift and frowned in concern.
Ye Wenjin mumbled, “I think… I left it at home…”
Rong Yunshu’s eyes narrowed skeptically—she didn’t quite buy that excuse.
Meeting her gaze, Ye Wenjin snapped back to attention and forced calm into her voice. “It’s fine, I’ll go back and get it now.”
With that, she stood up and left the dorm.
Rong Yunshu had been about to offer to go with her, but before she could speak, Ye Wenjin had already hurried out.
The dorm fell silent for a moment. Chu Yunsheng, who had been discreetly observing the two, murmured, “Wenjin really is acting strange…”
Rong Yunshu didn’t argue—she felt the same way.
Meanwhile, Ye Wenjin, now deemed suspicious by everyone, slowed her pace once she left the dorm, feeling troubled.
Her phone had been taken by the servants. There was a good chance Yin Yu and the others were waiting for her at home. Going back now would be walking right into a trap—she might even be detained.
But if she didn’t go back…
She didn’t have any cash on hand to buy a new phone.
Ye Wenjin let out a faint sigh and found herself at the school gate without realizing it.
Just as she was unsure of what to do, a car slowly pulled up beside her. The window rolled down, revealing a familiar face.
They had only parted ways at the school gate not long ago, so seeing her again so soon left Ye Wenjin momentarily stunned, wondering if she was mistaken.
“Jian… Sister?”
She had initially intended to address her as “Ms. Jian,” but under the gaze of those calm eyes, the words somehow twisted into “Sister.”
After obediently calling out, Ye Wenjin asked with some confusion, “Sister… why did you come back?”
Jian Mo looked at her, then handed over a gift bag.
Ye Wenjin took it in a daze. “This is…”
“A phone and some cash. Go back now. I’ll contact you on Monday.”
Ye Wenjin froze, instinctively wanting to ask how Jian Mo knew she needed these things. But under those unreadable eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to voice the question.
As Jian Mo withdrew her gaze and prepared to leave, Ye Wenjin suddenly mustered the courage to blurt out, “Wait!”
Jian Mo paused slightly and turned to look at her. “What is it?”
Ye Wenjin closed her eyes awkwardly, almost too embarrassed to face her. But it would be worse to keep Jian Mo waiting, so she took the phone from the gift bag, turned it on, and opened the dial screen. “Sister, could I… have your contact info? Don’t misunderstand—I just thought it’d be easier to stay in touch if I had your number…”
Her voice grew quieter as she spoke.
The scene undeniably looked like she was trying to flirt and ask for a number—with a rather flimsy excuse at that.
It was highly suspicious.
Ye Wenjin lowered her eyes, cheeks slightly flushed. “If… it’s inconvenient, then never—”
“Alright.”
Ye Wenjin snapped her head up and hurriedly handed over the phone. When it was returned, a string of numbers had already been added to the screen.
Now that she had the contact info, Ye Wenjin obediently bid farewell. “Then I won’t disturb you any further, Sister. Have a safe trip.”
The other party remained silent, and the atmosphere grew quiet. Puzzled, Ye Wenjin looked up—only to see the car window gradually rolling up.
Was it her imagination, or did she catch a glimpse of Jian Mo smiling through the gap in the window?
Ye Wenjin stood frozen for a long while, still dazed even after the car had driven far away.
Suddenly, her phone rang. Ye Wenjin instinctively glanced at it and recognized the caller ID—it was the number she had just obtained.
She quickly answered, careful not to disturb the other person. “Hello?”
“Still standing there?”
Ye Wenjin blinked. “No, I’m already on my way back.”
“Heh. Little liar. Go home.”
Ye Wenjin looked around but didn’t spot the familiar car, making her doubt herself.
“Stop looking. I’m already gone.”
Ye Wenjin: “!”
How did she guess that?!
She immediately replied obediently, “Okay, Sister.”
“Mhm.”
The call ended, but Ye Wenjin still held her phone, unwillingly scanning the area once more. When she still couldn’t find the car, she finally mumbled and turned to leave.
This time, however, her steps were much lighter.
