- Chapter 1 - CohabitationShe and I Are Already Married
We were already married.
When Cheng Yang woke up, dusk was approaching.
Her drowsy, blurry face was reflected in the glass window. The bed beside her was empty, only the smoothed white sheets remained.
Barefoot, Cheng Yang stepped onto the carpet and, leaning against the wall, walked unsteadily to the door.
As she opened it, she saw the maid outside, wiping the stair railing.
“Aunt Jiang,” she asked in a raspy voice, “where’s A’Xun?”
Jiang Huimei approached and steadied Cheng Yang, who was still unsteady on her feet. “Miss Xu Xun went to the Starlight Ceremony today,” she replied. “She told me not to wake you and let you sleep in.”
Cheng Yang gazed at the darkening sky, a faint smile curving her lips. “When did she leave?”
Jiang Huimei helped Cheng Yang sit on the sofa. “She left at dawn.”
“Oh,” Cheng Yang murmured, switching on the flat-screen TV opposite her and expertly navigating to the movie channel.
Moments later, a warm, beautiful face appeared on the screen.
The Omega being interviewed by the host was Xu Xun, Cheng Yang’s newlywed wife.
A secret marriage is still a marriage.
Though Cheng Yang remembered nothing, she knew that choosing to marry secretly was the best option while Xu Xun’s career was soaring.
Suddenly, a sharp pain stabbed through her scalp.
Cheng Yang’s brow furrowed, and she gasped for breath.
Jiang Huimei immediately called their private doctor.
Standing helplessly behind Cheng Yang, Jiang Huimei watched as cold sweat streamed down the Alpha’s face, afraid to move.
When Jian Fan arrived, Cheng Yang was curled up on the sofa, her eyes closed.
The Alpha’s cheeks and lips were as pale as paper, her lower lip marked with a dense pattern of teeth marks, and fine beads of sweat dotted her forehead.
After an injection of a sedative and painkiller, Cheng Yang’s labored breathing gradually eased.
She slowly opened her eyes, looked at the beta before her, and said weakly, “Why is it you? I thought A’Xun had come back.”
Jian Fan glanced at the large screen where Xu Xun was raising a trophy and shaking hands with the host. He sighed helplessly, “Look, she’s on TV.”
Cheng Yang’s eyes widened slightly, and she smiled. “If only I had the power to travel through time and space, I could jump into the TV and accept the award with her.”
Seeing Cheng Yang’s unwavering gaze fixed on Xu Xun, who was radiating brilliance on the big screen, Jiang Huimei sighed inwardly.
She hesitated, exchanging a glance with Jian Fan, then shook her head, at a loss for words.
After a moment, Cheng Yang suddenly spoke up. “Aunt Jiang, I always feel like something’s missing from that wall.”
Before Jiang Huimei could ask what she meant, Cheng Yang continued, “Why isn’t there a wedding photo of me and A’Xun?”
Jian Fan and Jiang Huimei exchanged bewildered looks.
Jiang Huimei’s mind raced as she quickly sent a message to Xu Xun, who was thousands of miles away. “It’s probably just put away,” she explained. “You can ask her when she gets back.”
—
Meanwhile, at the boarding gate thousands of miles away, Xu Xun received Jian Fan’s message.
Xu Xun frowned slightly as she read it.
She pinched the bridge of her nose and called her assistant.
It was nearly midnight when Xu Xun’s car finally pulled up to the villa.
After enduring hours of turbulence on the plane, her heart began to race the moment her high-heeled feet touched the ground.
The villa was brightly lit, causing Xu Xun to involuntarily furrow her brow. Her steps quickened, urgency driving her forward without her even realizing it.
The moment the front door swung open, a pungent smell of burning filled the air.
Jiang Huimei paced anxiously at the entrance of the open kitchen, her face lighting up as she spotted Xu Xun like a savior. “Miss, you’re finally back! Madam insisted on cooking you a midnight snack herself, but I didn’t dare interfere…”
Before she could finish, Xu Xun hurried into the kitchen, only to find Cheng Yang holding a steak pan emitting dark smoke.
Cheng Yang’s hand stung from the hot handle. She was about to discard the charred steak and ruined pan when she turned and met Xu Xun’s urgent gaze.
For a moment, she didn’t know how to react.
Xu Xun took the pan by the handle, set it aside, and gently grasped Cheng Yang’s wrist, carefully examining her hands.
The fingers of Cheng Yang’s left hand were slightly reddened from the burn.
It barely hurt, and she was about to reassure Xu Xun when the other woman slowly lifted her head.
Cheng Yang met Xu Xun’s bloodshot eyes, and a tidal wave of emotion surged through her heart.
She couldn’t understand why such a minor burn would trigger such an intense reaction in Xu Xun.
Cheng Yang was terrified by Xu Xun’s demeanor.
She felt like prey caught in the gaze of a predator, unable to speak or move.
The two remained frozen in place for over ten seconds.
Cheng Yang noticed Xu Xun’s expression suddenly shift again, as if the Omega who had nearly devoured her moments ago had never existed.
Xu Xun’s vocal cords rasped, her voice hoarse and trembling as she spoke.
Even though she spoke slowly, Cheng Yang could still sense something was wrong.
“It’s almost dawn,” Xu Xun asked. “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Cheng Yang stared at the scorched steak pan, looking like a child caught doing something wrong.
She explained softly, “Dr. Jian said you’d be back around one in the morning. I couldn’t sleep, and I was worried you might not have eaten properly while entertaining clients, so I…”
The words Xu Xun was about to say caught in her throat. She moved her lips, her face etched with exhaustion, the meticulously applied makeup failing to mask her fatigue.
Through the layer of foundation, Cheng Yang could even see how paper-white her cheeks had become.
Taking advantage of Jiang Huimei’s distraction while cleaning the kitchen, Cheng Yang quickly pressed a kiss to Xu Xun’s red lips. Taking her hand, she said softly, “A’Xun, I was wrong.”
The two soft, pale pink lips parted like a dragonfly skimming the water’s surface, leaving behind a faint scent of alcohol.
Cheng Yang knew Xu Xun had been drinking again.
Xu Xun’s body stiffened, her pupils suddenly dilating.
Faced with Cheng Yang’s unexpected kiss, she didn’t even know where to put her hands.
Cheng Yang thought Xu Xun was still upset with her, so she pressed closer, wrapping her arms around Xu Xun’s waist. She lowered her head and gazed up at Xu Xun with an innocent expression.
Xu Xun remained silent. Cheng Yang leaned in further, pressing the tip of her nose against Xu Xun’s, nuzzling her affectionately.
“A’Xun, are you too tired? Why don’t we take a bath and go to bed?”
“Okay…”
Xu Xun nodded mechanically, like a puppet on strings, her gaze dropping.
When she met Cheng Yang’s beautiful, teary eyes, muscle memory compelled her to look away.
This reaction displeased Cheng Yang.
She felt frustrated. Despite her own initiative and the fact that they were married, Xu Xun’s responses to her were sometimes bizarre, completely unlike the intimate exchanges between normal couples.
Suppressing her doubts, Cheng Yang reasoned that Xu Xun had been working since dawn, returning home exhausted after a long day. It was understandable that she wouldn’t want to be intimate.
After a few internal sighs, Cheng Yang pulled away from Xu Xun, creating a half-meter distance between them.
She looked up into Xu Xun’s eyes. “I know you’re in the midst of your career’s peak, so busy you barely have time to breathe. Don’t worry, I’ll support you no matter what you do.”
In the bedroom, Cheng Yang lay face down on the bed, unable to sleep on her back.
During the car accident, the back of her head had suffered a severe impact. Miraculously, aside from the head injury, she had only sustained minor scrapes and bruises.
Cheng Yang couldn’t recall anything from before the accident.
Whenever she tried to retrieve her lost memories, even a slight mental effort would trigger a sharp, needle-like pain in her head.
After lying there for a while, her mind remained blank. Straining her thoughts only brought pain.
She gave up.
I won’t think about it anymore.
If I fell here, I’ll just lie down and sleep it off.
Half an hour later, Xu Xun emerged from the bathroom wrapped in a towel. She turned to see Cheng Yang lying face down on the bed, staring back at her.
Cheng Yang cupped her face in her hands and smiled, eagerly inviting Xu Xun onto the bed.
Her movements were a little too enthusiastic. As she sat up, she aggravated the scrapes on her leg, hissing in pain. When Xu Xun glanced over, she quickly pretended nothing was wrong.
The moment Xu Xun sat on the bed, Cheng Yang snuggled close.
She wrapped her arms around the freshly bathed, soft-smelling Omega from behind, nuzzling the nape of Xu Xun’s neck.
Xu Xun’s pheromone was White Sandalwood, a faint, sweet, and delicate fragrance that could only be detected up close.
The shower gel at home was peach-scented, exactly like Cheng Yang’s pheromones.
Though they hadn’t marked each other recently, Cheng Yang wrapped her arms around Xu Xun from behind, inhaling the White Sandalwood scent overlaid with peach. She felt utterly content.
Due to the car accident a few days prior, Cheng Yang had developed various minor health issues, preventing her from marking her Omega. She could only nuzzle against him from behind.
Xu Xun’s hair tips were still damp. With his back to Cheng Yang, his movements seemed perfectly normal.
But the moment Cheng Yang leaned her head on his shoulder and turned to gaze at his cheek, she couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “A’Xun, your face is so red. Are you blushing?”
Xu Xun bit his lower lip and mumbled, “No.”
Cheng Yang sighed dramatically, feigning helplessness. “Ah, no wonder you don’t want to get close to me. My hair’s been shaved off at the back—it’s so unsightly.”
Xu Xun quickly protested, “That’s not true! I just… I just…”
Cheng Yang whined, “Just what? You think I look ugly now, don’t you? I cry every morning when I see my hideous hair in the mirror. If the accident had disfigured me, and my pretty face was gone, would you divorce me then?”
“……”
Warm breaths brushed against the back of Xu Xun’s neck, gradually tinting his snow-white skin with a delicate blush.
Cheng Yang, oblivious to the subtle changes in the Omega’s body she held, continued to nuzzle him relentlessly. Perhaps due to years of self-restraint, she remained unaware of the unusual reactions her embrace was eliciting in Xu Xun.
Realizing her “Beauty Trap” had failed to ensnare Xu Xun, Cheng Yang reluctantly released him. She turned away, hugging her knees to her chest and resting her chin on them, curling into a ball like a wronged snow-white kitten.
Xu Xun climbed onto the bed, but as soon as he sat beside Cheng Yang, she startled him with a sudden embrace.
Her voice hoarse and nasal, Cheng Yang accused him in a wounded tone, “You said our pheromone compatibility was one hundred percent, but I don’t feel like you like me at all. You don’t even respond when I kiss you. Has your affection for me faded since we got married? Do you find me repulsive now?”
Xu Xun held Cheng Yang tightly as she buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing softly. He murmured gently, “I’ve never found you repulsive, nor have I ever considered divorcing you. I’m just afraid… afraid you might not want me anymore.”
Upon hearing these words, Cheng Yang’s mind froze for a moment. She moved her lips, unsure of what to say.
Perhaps the car accident had affected her language system. Cheng Yang bit her lower lip, finally letting out a cold hmph. “That’s more like it. You can’t divorce me, or I’ll hang myself from the bedpost the very next day… Mmph.”
“Don’t say such nonsense!”
A hand clamped over her mouth.
Cheng Yang met Xu Xun’s angry gaze. She kissed his palm twice and was about to suck on his fingertips when Xu Xun abruptly pulled his hand away.
Xu Xun’s palm tingled, the sensation spreading through his entire body. He swallowed hard, turning his head to meet Cheng Yang’s triumphant gaze.
“……”
Cheng Yang was about to pounce on the Omega and kiss him fiercely.
Just as she was rubbing her hands together, ready to “misbehave,” she noticed the fatigue had vanished from Xu Xun’s eyes, replaced by an odd, glittering light.
Her poised movements froze. Cheng Yang heard Xu Xun say, “Yangyang, you just said I can’t divorce you, right?”
Cheng Yang nodded blankly.
Xu Xun smiled faintly, then his expression darkened as he said calmly, “Alright, I’ll remember that. But if one day in the future, you’re the one who brings up divorce…”
Cheng Yang grew anxious. Though she didn’t understand the meaning behind Xu Xun’s words, she blurted out, “That day will never come!”
Their eyes met.
Xu Xun grasped Cheng Yang’s wrist, his fingertips tracing the delicate, slender fingers of her hand, brushing against the newly scabbed-over abrasion on her skin.
He lowered his head and kissed the scar on her knuckle. “You said it yourself. You can’t take it back.”
A tingling, numbing sensation surged from her fingers through her entire body. Cheng Yang’s scalp prickled, and she shook her head distractedly. “I won’t take it back.”
Just a few days ago, every breath had sent a sharp pain through Cheng Yang’s head. Now, her body was recovering steadily, the wounds slowly healing. She had already forgotten the pain before the scars had even faded.
Her teeth itched, and her heart ached with longing to mark the gentle, attentive Omega before her.
But…
But a nameless unease lingered in Cheng Yang’s heart. She hadn’t yet figured out how to handle their relationship.
She had just woken up in the hospital, and Xu Xun was the first person she saw.
Xu Xun’s eyes were red from crying as he told her she had lost her memory. He also revealed that they had secretly married just days before her car accident.
Recalling Xu Xun’s panicked state at the time, Cheng Yang instinctively glanced at the Omega before her.
Xu Xun’s bright eyes remained fixed on her. In a hoarse voice, she asked, “Yangyang, does your head still hurt?”
Cheng Yang slowly shook her head, lying, “It doesn’t hurt anymore. I feel perfectly fine now. Do you think our relationship…”
Hearing Cheng Yang’s hesitant words, Xu Xun pressed, “What is it?”
Cheng Yang’s beautiful eyes flickered slightly as she smiled. “Nothing. Oh, Aunt Jiang mentioned you put away our wedding photos. Could I see them?”
Xu Xun exhaled slowly, then pressed a gentle kiss to Cheng Yang’s forehead, her voice trembling almost imperceptibly.
Her eyes curved into a warm smile as she said softly, “The wedding photos… of course you can see them. But they fell off the wall and broke a few days ago. I had them sent for restoration, and they should be back by tomorrow.”
