- Chapter 13 - I Like Your Pheromone
In truth, this incident was merely a minor episode.
Â
Yet it had become deeply buried in Cheng Yang’s heart, leaving her feeling guilty and disoriented, as if she owed Xu Xun something.
Â
Love often comes with a sense of indebtedness.
Â
Cheng Yang admitted to herself that she loved Xu Xun deeply now. She also knew that before her amnesia, the two must have been incredibly devoted to each other.
Â
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Cheng Yang drifted off to sleep.
Â
Xu Xun had closed his eyes before her.
Â
About ten minutes later, Cheng Yang fell asleep.
Â
Suddenly, Xu Xun opened his eyes. Those bright eyes stared at Cheng Yang’s face in the darkness.
Â
The next morning, Cheng Yang woke up hungry.
She sat up weakly in bed, rubbed her sleepy eyes, and caught the sweet aroma of breakfast.
Her stomach growled loudly. Clutching her abdomen with one hand, she washed up and went downstairs.
The villa was filled with the rich scent of eggs and milk. Cheng Yang sniffed deeply, rubbing her eyes as she descended the stairs.
She happened to make eye contact with an Omega sitting in the living room.
Seeing the Omega in a formal suit, sitting with elegant composure, Cheng Yang assumed she must be a friend of Xu Xun’s.
Xu Xun was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables, unaware that Cheng Yang had come downstairs.
The Omega sitting on the sofa stood up, a flicker of surprise crossing her face when she saw Cheng Yang, though the expression vanished almost immediately.
Cheng Yang smiled at her. “Hello, are you a friend of A’Xun’s?”
Xiao Qing extended his right hand, saying politely, “I’m Xu Xun’s manager, Xiao Qing.”
Cheng Yang chuckled. “Oh, Teacher Xiao! Please, have a seat.”
Xu Xun, who had been cutting vegetables in the kitchen, turned around at the sound of their voices. Her gaze deepened as she watched the harmonious scene between the two.
Cheng Yang picked up the glass of warm water the housekeeper had poured and took a sip. “Teacher Xiao, is there something important you wanted to discuss?”
Xiao Qing paused, then recovered. “Nothing urgent, really. I just wanted to check on you and see how Xu Xun’s been doing lately.”
The table in the living room was laden with tonics Xiao Qing had brought. “Xu Xun told me all about your situation. After surviving such a close call, good fortune is sure to follow. You’ll have smooth sailing from now on.”
Cheng Yang’s lips curved into a smile as she set down her glass. “By the way, Teacher Xiao, when does A’Xun’s variety show start filming? I’d love to go with her.”
A fleeting look of surprise flashed in Xiao Qing’s eyes. “Ah, the plans have changed. It’ll probably be in about two months. The director will send out an email a week before filming begins.”
Cheng Yang pursed her lips, a sudden inspiration striking her.
“Teacher Xiao, as a heavyweight in the entertainment industry, could I ask you for the director’s phone number?”
If a lesser-known actor made such a request, it would typically imply a quid pro quo arrangement.
But Cheng Yang was different. With her established status in the industry, she could easily command influence, and directors would practically line up to curry favor with her.
Having debuted as a child star, Cheng Yang boasted a massive fan base across all age groups, making her a guaranteed ratings magnet.
Xiao Qing found this puzzling. Given Cheng Yang’s prominence, she should have connections with most of the industry’s top directors. Why wouldn’t she already have their numbers?
Sensing Xiao Qing’s confusion, Cheng Yang smiled and explained, “My phone was damaged in the car accident, and I still haven’t recovered the data.”
Ah, that explains it.
Xiao Qing readily shared the director’s contact information.
Noticing Cheng Yang typing slowly on her phone, Xiao Qing remarked, “This variety show was originally planned with four guests. The director mentioned sending you an invitation email while you were abroad, but you declined at the time. That’s how Xu Xun got involved.”
Cheng Yang’s typing paused momentarily. “Oh, I see. That’s a bit awkward now.”
But the message had already been sent.
Xiao Qing’s gaze fell on Cheng Yang’s gauze-wrapped head. “Filming starts in two months,” he said hesitantly. “Will your injury be healed by then?”
Cheng Yang touched the back of her head and shook her head. “It’s fine. I’ll be able to remove the gauze soon. Then I can join A’Xun on the variety show. Just thinking about it makes me so happy.”
Xiao Qing hesitated, then said, “Just be careful, okay?”
Cheng Yang’s lips curved into a smile as she glanced at Xu Xun, who was busy in the kitchen. She whispered, “Teacher Xiao, could you keep this a secret for now? I want to surprise A’Xun later.”
Xiao Qing nodded. “Of course. I won’t tell her.”
Cheng Yang sighed in relief. “That’s good. A’Xun actually turned down the variety show to take care of me. I feel like I’m holding her back.”
Xiao Qing pursed her lips, about to say something, when Xu Xun’s gentle voice suddenly came from behind them.
“Breakfast is ready, Yangyang. Come eat.”
Xiao Qing stood up, smiling. “Then I won’t bother you any longer.”
Xu Xun politely insisted, “You’re already here. Have some before you leave.”
The words were polite, but the tone sounded perfunctory. Anyone could tell it was just a formality.
Xiao Qing smiled and stepped back. “I need to return to the company. I won’t bother you any longer. Goodbye for now.”
At that moment, Xu Xun set down his plate, took Cheng Yang’s hand with practiced intimacy, and said with a smile, “We’ll see you out.”
Xiao Qing’s heart skipped a beat, but the smile on his lips remained unwavering. “Alright.”
After watching Xiao Qing leave the villa, Cheng Yang and Xu Xun intertwined their fingers. “Honey, Teacher Xiao has quite a good temper. Even after all that, she didn’t lose her cool with you.”
Xu Xun chuckled. “You’re one to talk. Last time I apologized to her for ages before she finally calmed down. I’ll never dare provoke her again.”
Breakfast consisted of bacon and egg sandwiches paired with creamy, rich cheese milk.
Cheng Yang felt drowsy after eating.
Her health had been weak lately, and she hadn’t been exercising much. Her appetite wasn’t great, and she was prone to carb crashes.
Xu Xun led her by the hand to sit in the backyard garden, basking in the sun.
The garden was filled with peach trees. Cheng Yang looked up to see a canopy of lush green branches laden with countless peaches, their skins still tinged with green, not yet fully ripe.
Half-jokingly, Cheng Yang said, “Honey, why do you love peaches so much? Is it because of me?”
Xu Xun smiled and leaned gently against Cheng Yang’s shoulder. “Of course it’s because of you. I love peaches, I love their fragrance, but most of all, I love the scent of your pheromones.”
Cheng Yang floated on Xu Xun’s sweet words, feeling utterly charmed. “Of course! I knew you loved me so much you’d love everything about me.”
A ripe peach hung overhead. Cheng Yang plucked it effortlessly and placed it on a tray. With a fruit knife, she gently peeled away the fuzzy skin, revealing the crisp, juicy pink flesh beneath.
The peach’s fuzz was sparse, giving the skin a velvety feel.
After a quick rinse, Cheng Yang meticulously diced the fruit into small pieces and added them to the fruit platter, mixing them with the other fruits.
The peach’s aroma filled the air, its sweet, pale pink juice staining Cheng Yang’s fingers.
She rinsed her hands clean and presented the platter to Xu Xun with a radiant smile. “Honey, try the first peach of summer! This one’s sure to be crisp and sweet.”
Xu Xun’s lips curved into a smile.
Cheng Yang speared a pink peach cube with a fruit fork and held it to Xu Xun’s lips.
Xu Xun opened her mouth and took a bite, chewing slowly and savoring the flavor. “Everything Yangyang feeds me tastes extra fragrant and sweet.”
Cheng Yang tasted a piece herself, laughing. “I think your mouth is even sweeter! You’re so good at flattering me, you’ve got me completely dizzy.”
Seeing Xu Xun enjoying the peach, Cheng Yang fed her several more pieces.
Her phone vibrated twice on the table. Cheng Yang glanced at the screen and saw a message from the director. She set down the fruit fork and tapped to reply.
Xu Xun sat quietly beside her, showing no interest in prying into Cheng Yang’s privacy.
Cheng Yang smiled at the director’s excited, incoherent message. She wanted to share her joy with Xu Xun but ultimately restrained herself.
She couldn’t let him know yet. She wanted to surprise him as a mystery guest.
I wonder what his expression will be when he sees me on set, she thought, her anticipation growing.
Cheng Yang put down her phone, ready to continue feeding Xu Xun.
She turned to find his entire face flushed red, his lips swollen, his eyes glistening with tears, and he was gasping for air.
“Wife, what… what’s wrong?”
Sensing something was wrong, Cheng Yang saw Xu Xun shake his head, but his fingernails were scratching frantically at his arm.
Clear marks appeared on his pale skin, and in an instant, the snow-white flesh swelled alarmingly.
Cheng Yang’s heart pounded with panic. The sudden crisis left her speechless.
She pulled Xu Xun into a tight embrace and frantically dialed 120.
“Wife, are you… are you allergic to peaches?”
