- Chapter 6 - Comforting You. I'll Be Waiting in Bed.
The words hung in the air, freezing both of them in place.
Xu Xun froze the moment the words slipped out.
She moved her lips, cautiously watching Cheng Yang, who seemed completely oblivious to the situation. She stammered, “I… I didn’t mean it like that.”
Cheng Yang met Xu Xun’s flustered gaze and smiled. “Don’t you know I don’t have any other Omegas?”
Xu Xun stared blankly at Cheng Yang, a faint warmth rising to her forehead.
At that moment, the Alpha leaned in for a comforting kiss.
Xu Xun heard Cheng Yang say, “You’ve been working too hard these past few days. Taking care of me while juggling work—you’ve been leaving before dawn and returning after dark.”
Cheng Yang smiled. “It’s rare to have this much free time. Now that you’ve won an international award and gained global recognition, endorsement offers are flooding in. You’ll be swamped with work soon.”
Xu Xun’s slender fingers rested on the back of Cheng Yang’s hand. She looked up into the Alpha’s bright, sparkling eyes and said with a self-deprecating laugh, “If I’d known I’d be this busy, I wouldn’t have taken that film role in the first place.”
“Don’t say that.”
Cheng Yang closed her eyes briefly. Though she didn’t fully understand her current condition, she knew all too well how quickly the entertainment industry churned through talent, with countless actors rising and falling like fleeting stars.
If Xu Xun didn’t seize this opportunity, she might soon become a “person of no record.”
Cheng Yang tentatively suggested, “A’Xun, listen to me. You should participate in that travel reality show.”
Xu Xun was utterly bewildered. She couldn’t understand why Cheng Yang was so eager to push her away. “Yangyang, why are you…?”
Cheng Yang spoke earnestly, “I’ve researched that show. This season features many renowned actors and even an award-winning director. We both know how prestigious it is.”
Xu Xun moved her lips, but no words came out.
Faced with such a tempting offer, she stubbornly shook her head. “I won’t go. I want to stay with you. I’m not going anywhere.”
Cheng Yang joked, “It’s just a reality show. I’m not going to suddenly vanish. What are you so afraid of?”
Xu Xun shook her head again.
Cheng Yang saw through her worries. “I know you’re concerned about me, but you’re only twenty-six. Your future is bright. You need to think about your future.”
Xu Xun remained silent.
Cheng Yang smiled, leaned in, and kissed the corner of her lips. “I’m a year younger than you, you know, Jiejie. Just listen to me, okay?”
Xu Xun’s heart fluttered. Cheng Yang’s use of “Jiejie” sent a shiver of warmth through her body.
Meeting the Alpha’s intense, direct gaze, Xu Xun nodded dumbly. “I promise.”
Cheng Yang’s lips curved into a smile as she wrapped her arm around Xu Xun’s neck, pressing their foreheads together. “That’s a good girl.”
Xu Xun lowered her lashes, unable to resist asking, “I know you’re doing this for my own good, but after all these years of acting, I have everything I could ever want. The only thing I can’t bear to lose is you.”
Cheng Yang suppressed a laugh, finding Xu Xun’s every word strangely dramatic.
This wasn’t some life-or-death situation—it was just a few months of filming a variety show. There was no reason for such an extreme reaction.
But then Cheng Yang remembered her near-fatal accident on the way back to China. Anyone would be traumatized by that.
That explained why Xu Xun had been so clingy, willing to pay exorbitant breach-of-contract fees just to stay by her side.
Seeing Xu Xun agree to continue filming the variety show, Cheng Yang reminded her, “A’Xun, you should apologize to your manager.”
Xu Xun nodded. “Okay, I was wrong this time…”
Before she could finish, a sharp voice cut through the air from outside the door: “Xu Xun! Come out here!”
Cheng Yang froze, whispering, “Who’s that?”
Xu Xun explained, “It’s my manager. How did she find me here…?”
Cheng Yang pinched Xu Xun’s chin, her eyes crinkling as she pressed a kiss to his lips. “See? I told you this variety show was crucial. Go smooth things over with your manager.”
The words sounded awkward no matter how you heard them.
Xu Xun didn’t want to leave the house. With a frustrated expression, he said, “Don’t talk nonsense. She’s an Omega, and my heart belongs only to you.”
Cheng Yang pushed Xu Xun toward the door, laughing. “Alright, alright, getting jealous over something like this? I can’t go out looking like this anyway. I’ll take a nice bath and wait for you in bed.”
Before he left, Cheng Yang looped her arm around Xu Xun’s neck, pressed his head against hers, and kissed him for a few lingering seconds.
After the bedroom door closed, Xu Xun instinctively touched his lips, a dazed smile spreading across his face that he couldn’t control.
Xiao Qing, standing at the foot of the stairs, caught the entire scene.
At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her, but she quickly realized something was wrong.
Xu Xun was in love!
Xu! Xun! Was! In! Love!
!!!
This was far more terrifying than breaching the variety show contract.
Xiao Qing stood frozen in disbelief, still reeling when Xu Xun came downstairs.
Xu Xun immediately noticed Xiao Qing’s strange demeanor. “What’s wrong? You look so pale.”
Xiao Qing stormed in and slammed her handbag onto the sofa. She glared at Xu Xun, whose face was flushed and bore a suspicious red mark on his neck, and demanded, “Are you seeing someone?”
Xu Xun, seated on the sofa, replied without hesitation, “Yes.”
“Say that again!” Xiao Qing’s voice sharpened with fury.
Xu Xun glanced up at her, unsurprised by her reaction. “Sit down first. Don’t wake her.”
Xiao Qing’s gaze swept to the tightly closed bedroom door. Lowering her voice to suppress her simmering rage, she hissed, “What did you tell me back then? No dating or marriage before thirty!”
Xu Xun took a sip of water, raising an eyebrow. “You actually believed that?”
“Of course not!” Xiao Qing’s brow furrowed deeply. “This is insane! Insane! Renting a hotel room is one thing, but bringing someone home? What if you’re photographed? Have you considered the consequences?”
Xu Xun nodded. “I know.”
Xiao Qing’s frustration boiled over. “If you know, you should be avoiding risks! Get her out of here immediately! And don’t get too close in the future!”
Xu Xun leaned back comfortably on the sofa, smiling. “Sister Xiao, let’s not talk about that today. Let’s discuss the variety show instead.”
“The variety show? This issue is far more serious than a contract breach!” Xiao Qing exclaimed.
Xiao Qing had never encountered such a thorny situation before. Realizing the truth belatedly, she said with a forced smile, “So that’s why you suddenly messaged me about breaking the contract. You’re in love, aren’t you?”
Xu Xun remained silent, tacitly confirming Xiao Qing’s suspicion.
Xiao Qing’s brow furrowed into a deep frown. “I’ve been watching your progress all these years. I always thought you were a clear-headed person. But I can’t understand—who is this celestial being you’ve been hiding? What kind of enchantress could bewitch you so completely, turning your world upside down?”
Xu Xun replied, “Sister Xiao, whatever problems arise from this, I’ll take full responsibility. You don’t need to worry about it.”
Xiao Qing was exasperated. “But I’m your manager! How can I just stand by and do nothing?”
Xu Xun lowered his gaze and explained, “There’s no solution to this for now. I won’t break up with her. We’ll announce our marriage soon. I’ve already chosen the venue.”
“…………”
Xiao Qing laughed in anger. “What did you say? Say it again!”
Xu Xun stared directly at her, enunciating each word clearly: “I’m going to marry her.”
—
Cheng Yang sat on the second-floor terrace, sipping tea.
Though called a terrace, it was more like a small garden, filled with potted peach trees of various varieties.
It was May, and the trees were laden with unripe peaches.
Cheng Yang looked up and noticed a pale pink honey peach hanging overhead, seemingly ripening ahead of schedule.
No wonder she had smelled a faint peach fragrance when she looked up. Cheng Yang had initially panicked, thinking her pheromones were leaking and hastily checked herself.
The peach was perfectly round and pink. Cheng Yang reached up and plucked it. Its fuzzy skin felt pleasant to the touch.
Xu Xun must really love peaches, Cheng Yang thought. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have planted so many honey peach trees at home.
But then she reconsidered: My pheromones smell like peaches. Could it be that Xu Xun likes me because he likes peaches?
Cheng Yang cupped her chin in her hands, staring intently at the ripe peach in the plate. “Looks like I’m a hopeless romantic,” she muttered to herself.
She had no idea how long Xu Xun and her manager were talking outside. Bored, Cheng Yang sat beneath the peach tree and pulled out her phone to check the news.
When she opened Weibo, the trending topics were all about her. Some were even spreading rumors that her prolonged absence meant she had already died.
Cheng Yang couldn’t understand why these people were cursing her for no reason.
Just a few days ago, she had posted a Weibo update assuring everyone she was safe, which had also gone viral. Now, a new wave of clout-chasers had already begun their antics.
Cheng Yang carefully searched her memories for information about her identity. The encyclopedia entry about her was surprisingly detailed.
First and foremost, she was an actress. She was also the only daughter of the Cheng Group’s chairman, single and unmarried.
However, rumors circulated that she had gotten engaged in March of this year, though the identity of her fiancé remained unknown.
Initially, Cheng Yang had wondered why, despite the major incident of her car accident and amnesia, her parents had never tried to find her—except for Xu Xun.
Later, upon investigating, Cheng Yang discovered that her only mother had passed away from illness last December.
Cheng Yang’s heart churned with mixed emotions. The Cheng Group was now being managed by her aunt, who had never contacted her. Could the near-fatal car accident have been connected to her aunt?
Returning to her bedroom, Cheng Yang turned on her computer and tried to search for any clues. But her mind remained blank. Staring at the empty address bar, her fingers danced across the keyboard, attempting to find something through muscle memory.
Unfortunately, Cheng Yang found nothing.
Her phone’s contact list was also empty. She slumped lazily onto the bed.
Whenever she tried to recall anything about her past, a headache would strike, as if an invisible force were blocking her memories.
It seems my life before wasn’t as carefree as I thought.
If it wasn’t happy, then I won’t think about it.
Humans are creatures of self-preservation, and Cheng Yang was no exception.
She liked Xu Xun, cherished their time together, and laughed heartily every day.
Cheng Yang watched her past appearances on screen. On the big screen, she was radiant and glamorous, flashing her signature dazzling smile at everyone.
No one knows me better than I know myself.
Cheng Yang could see through the eyes of this “Cheng Yang”—the one who was thriving in her career and shining in the public eye—that she wasn’t truly happy.
She closed her laptop, cleared her browsing history, and slipped out of her coat before entering the bathroom.
Â
Â
Downstairs, Xu Xun and Xiao Qing had been talking for a long time.
Â
Setting down her teacup, Xu Xun gazed at the darkening sky outside and said, “Let’s end our conversation here for today. I won’t act impulsively again. I apologize for all the trouble I’ve caused you.”
Â
Xiao Qing patted Xu Xun’s shoulder and sighed. “You’re still young. In this world, emotions are the least important thing. Money and status are what truly matter. You’ll understand when you’re my age.”
Â
Xu Xun nodded.
Â
Xiao Qing, finally seeing Xu Xun free from her romantic delusions, asked curiously, “By the way, what’s your lover’s name? Is she an actress or a civilian?”
Â
Xu Xun’s lips curved into a smile. “Her name is Cheng Yang.”
Â
Xiao Qing pondered for a moment, then casually remarked, “Cheng Yang… that name sounds so familiar…”
Â
The two exchanged a glance, and Xiao Qing immediately sensed something was wrong.
Â
She frantically searched her memory for information about “Cheng Yang,” finally uncovering the unsettling truth.
Â
Her voice trembling, Xiao Qing tentatively asked, “Which Cheng? Which Yang?”
Â
Xu Xun stood up with a smile. “What do you think?”
Â
The teacup in Xiao Qing’s hand slipped and shattered on the floor.
Â
Her vision went black.
