- Chapter 9 - Bath - Gentle Persuasion
Shortly after Jian Fan left, Cheng Yang retrieved a heat-resistant tray.
She placed two bowls of steamed egg custard on the tray, each bowl accompanied by two adorable ceramic spoons in different colors.
The scallions were freshly chopped into fine, even pieces and sprinkled evenly over the steamed egg custard.
Cheng Yang carried the tray upstairs and gently pushed open the bedroom door.
Xu Xun, who was lying face down on the bed, turned his head and met Cheng Yang’s gaze.
He struggled to sit up.
Cheng Yang hurried over, set the two bowls of steamed egg custard aside, and carefully took Xu Xun’s arm to help him sit up.
“Honey, are you feeling any better now?”
Xu Xun nodded. “Mm, it doesn’t hurt as much anymore.”
Cheng Yang’s gaze slowly drifted to the back of Xu Xun’s neck. “Let me help you sit up properly.”
Xu Xun chuckled helplessly. “You’re the one who’s supposed to be sick, yet here you are, a patient taking care of another patient.”
“Don’t say that,” Cheng Yang said, her lips curving into a smile as she placed one of the small bowls in front of Xu Xun. “These steamed egg custards look so beautiful. You’re such a talented cook, honey.”
Xu Xun lowered his gaze and smiled. “Your chopped scallions look so neat and appetizing too, so perfectly uniform.”
After exchanging compliments, Cheng Yang scooped up a small spoonful of steamed egg custard and held it to Xu Xun’s lips. “Enough with the scallion praise. Just eat. I’ll feed you.”
Xu Xun’s lips curved into a smile as he took small, deliberate bites of the custard.
After finishing one bite, Cheng Yang scooped up another spoonful and popped it into her own mouth, grinning. “I just love eating what my wife has already tasted.”
Xu Xun’s cheeks flushed. “Alright, hurry up and eat,” she murmured. “It’ll get fishy if it cools down.”
The two took turns, sharing the bowl of custard bite by bite until it was empty.
Then Cheng Yang picked up the second bowl.
Cheng Yang found the experience of sharing a bowl of steamed egg custard with Xu Xun strangely novel. Her heart felt warm and fuzzy, especially watching Xu Xun take such dainty bites.
“Wife, is one bowl enough? I’ll go make you a steak.”
Cheng Yang placed the two empty bowls on a tray, picked it up, and stood up.
Xu Xun grabbed her wrist from behind. “Yangyang, don’t bother. I’m full.”
“Honey, you’re still weak. Dr. Jian said you need to eat more meat.”
Cheng Yang lowered her head and kissed Xu Xun’s wrist, smiling. “I’ve been practicing pan-frying steak every day. I’ve gotten really good at it now—I promise I won’t burn it.”
Xu Xun remained worried. “You’re the one who’s injured and still recovering. Let the chef handle it.”
A hint of disappointment flickered in Cheng Yang’s eyes. “But honey, I heard cooking is muscle memory. Even with amnesia, you can still make delicious food.”
“But I can’t cook anything at all. Does that mean I’ve never made you anything good since we got together?”
Xu Xun moved her lips slightly. “As long as I’m here, you don’t need to cook.”
“How can I just sit around and eat what’s prepared for me every day?” Cheng Yang began to blame herself again. “I get it now—I used to be a freeloader. From now on, I’m going to learn to cook and make you something different every day.”
Xu Xun opened her mouth to protest, but Cheng Yang leaned down and slowly kissed her.
After a comforting kiss, Cheng Yang gently withdrew, taking a few steps back.
“Honey, don’t worry. I know my body well. Just wait in bed, and I’ll go downstairs to make you a steak.”
A complex emotion flickered through Xu Xun’s eyes before she lifted her head. “Then I want it medium-rare.”
“No, you have to eat it well-done.”
Xu Xun couldn’t help but chuckle. “Alright, I’ll listen to you.”
Â
Â
After going downstairs, Cheng Yang began bustling around the kitchen, clanging pots and pans.
Â
She didn’t have much of an appetite herself, but she simply wanted to make something delicious for Xu Xun.
Â
Knowing her limited cooking skills, Cheng Yang figured pan-frying a steak would be relatively simple compared to Chinese cuisine.
Â
She selected a tender filet mignon, skipping the marinating step.
Â
After searing both sides for two minutes each in a hot cast-iron skillet—enough to cook it well-done—Cheng Yang sliced the steak into bite-sized pieces and sprinkled it with freshly ground black pepper.
Â
Done.
Â
The bedroom door was ajar.
Â
Xu Xun caught the savory aroma of the steak from the bedroom.
Â
She set down her phone, threw back the covers, and slowly walked to the dining table in the living room.
Â
Cheng Yang had already plated the steak.
Â
The steak looked appetizing, perfectly seared without being burnt this time.
Â
Vibrant red cherry tomatoes and tender green asparagus formed a colorful palette around the golden-brown steak, its crispy edges making it even more tempting.
Â
Xu Xun tried to forget the “charcoal steak” Cheng Yang had made a few days earlier.
Â
Sitting across from Xu Xun, Cheng Yang noticed the constant upward curve of his lips and couldn’t help but ask, “Why are you smiling so much?”
Â
Xu Xun pressed his lips together. “You’ve improved so quickly. Just a few days ago, you were still…”
Â
Cheng Yang propped her cheek against her hand and pulled out her phone, snapping several photos of the steak she had just prepared. She stretched her arm out to find the perfect angle, capturing a selfie of herself flashing a peace sign with Xu Xun holding his fork and knife.
Â
Xu Xun gazed into the camera, a gentle smile blooming on his lips.
Â
He savored the tender, juicy steak. Though cooked well-done, it melted in his mouth.
Â
“Delicious,” he murmured.
Â
Hearing Xu Xun’s sincere praise, Cheng Yang’s face lit up. She cupped her cheeks with both hands, her eyes shining as she stared intently at the Omega eating so neatly before her.
Â
Since the car accident, Cheng Yang’s focus had deteriorated significantly. Sometimes she would inexplicably drift off into daydreams.
Â
Cheng Yang’s gaze froze momentarily.
Â
Her eyes had been fixed on Xu Xun, but after a moment, they drifted away.
Â
Until her lips brushed against something soft and warm.
Â
Cheng Yang glanced down and saw Xu Xun holding a piece of tender beef to her mouth.
Â
Her heart suddenly softened, and a pang of emotion welled up in her chest. She opened her mouth, took the beef, and chewed slowly, savoring each bite.
Â
Neither of them spoke.
Â
The candle Cheng Yang had lit on the table burned brightly, illuminating their radiant faces.
Â
After finishing her meal, Cheng Yang set her plate aside, planning for the housekeeper to clear it away the next day.
Â
But Xu Xun stepped behind her and took the plate from her hands. “I’m full and have nothing else to do. I’ll wash it.”
Â
Cheng Yang smiled. “Alright.”
Â
They divided the tasks clearly: Xu Xun washed the plates and bowls, while Cheng Yang dried them with a towel and placed them in the sterilizing cabinet.
Â
Once everything was done, Xu Xun stretched languidly, arching her back.
Â
Cheng Yang stared intently at her face, making Xu Xun feel a warmth rising in her cheeks.
Â
“Why are you staring at me like that? Is there something on my face?”
Â
“You’re beautiful,” Cheng Yang said truthfully.
Â
Xu Xun smiled, pressing her lips together. “Then tell me, what exactly do you find beautiful about me?”
Â
Cheng Yang continued to speak honestly, “Your eyes are beautiful, sparkling like stars. Your nose is lovely too, so straight and slightly upturned. And your lips… they’re so red and soft…”
Â
Her eyes lit up as she finished, “They’re both beautiful and perfect for kissing! Kissing you is sweet and tender, like eating jelly.”
Â
Xu Xun’s face flushed slightly as he asked casually, “So, you like kissing me?”
Â
Cheng Yang replied without hesitation, “Of course.”
Â
Xu Xun sighed. “But we’ve both been having some issues lately. I doubt we’ll have many chances to kiss for a while. I have variety shows coming up…”
Â
Cheng Yang frowned. “I’m your family. I’ll come with you.”
Â
Xu Xun looked up, his bright eyes fixed intently on Cheng Yang. “Really? You’ll stay with me the whole time?”
Â
Cheng Yang nodded solemnly. “Would I lie to you? From now on, you’ll work outside to earn money and support me, while I stay home researching recipes and cooking all kinds of delicious meals for you.”
Â
Xu Xun pressed further, “And what else?”
Â
Cheng Yang pondered for a moment. “I’ll warm your bed and take care of you every day.”
Â
“How will you take care of me?”
Â
Cheng Yang’s eyes lit up even brighter. “Of course, I’ll help you through your heat cycle! Omegas are special—they have heat cycles every month. I just don’t know when yours will start…”
Â
Xu Xun’s smile widened. “Soon.”
Â
Cheng Yang rubbed her temples. “I’m sorry, darling. I even forgot when your heat cycle is.”
Â
Xu Xun shook his head. “It’s fine. It’s at the end of the month, still over two weeks away.”
Â
Cheng Yang suddenly tensed up, licking her lips nervously. Her lips glistened, and she began to stutter.
Â
“Th-that’s… that’s not far off at all.”
Â
Xu Xun noticed Cheng Yang’s unease and asked with a smile, “Why are you so nervous?”
Â
Cheng Yang continued to stammer, “N-no… I’m not. I’m just… just thinking about… us… us…”
Â
As she spoke, Cheng Yang covered her face with her hands, the tips of her ears turning red.
Â
Xu Xun leaned forward and kissed the forehead of the pure and adorable Alpha, coaxing gently, “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. If you’ve forgotten what to do, I’ll teach you when the time comes.”
Â
The moment those words left his lips, Cheng Yang’s face flushed even deeper. “Darling, please don’t say that…”
Â
Xu Xun observed Cheng Yang’s blushing, bashful demeanor, taking in every Alpha gesture and expression.
Â
Her Alpha is so adorable.
Â
She’s my Alpha.
Â
Mine alone.
Â
Why can’t Omegas mark Alphas directly?
Â
The gland on the back of her neck throbbed with heat and pain. Xu Xun regretted not completing the marking in one swift motion.
Â
Even if the pain kept me bedridden, it would have been worth it, as long as I achieved my goal.
Â
But…
Â
Xu Xun cupped Cheng Yang’s faintly pink cheeks and smiled. “Yangyang, let’s take a bath and go to bed.”
Â
Cheng Yang nodded, letting Xu Xun lead her upstairs by the hand.
Â
She had already bathed, but she still eagerly anticipated sharing a bath with Xu Xun—the two of them soaking together in the tub, wrapped in each other’s arms.
Â
However, Jian Fan had warned them that Xu Xun’s neck couldn’t get wet until it fully healed. Bathing together would have to wait.
Â
And with the injury on her head, Cheng Yang had to be even more cautious.
Â
Cheng Yang’s footsteps faltered.
Â
She pressed her lips together, her breathing becoming rapid. Afraid Xu Xun would notice her irregular breathing, she forced herself to close her mouth and take small, shallow breaths through her nose.
Â
Her pounding heart betrayed her inner turmoil.
Â
Xu Xun led Cheng Yang into the bathroom by the hand. Afraid she might lose control and give herself away, Cheng Yang murmured, “Wife, maybe I should…”
Â
Before she could finish, Xu Xun unbuttoned her shirt right in front of her, revealing her snow-white, rounded shoulders.
Â
Cheng Yang’s breath hitched, and she instinctively wanted to turn away.
Â
Xu Xun’s soft arms wrapped around her neck, drawing her body close.
Â
Their soft bodies pressed against each other, sending a jolt through Cheng Yang’s scalp. She felt like she was about to explode.
Â
She swallowed hard, her ears ringing with a deafening roar.
Â
Then she heard Xu Xun’s sultry, husky voice, coaxing her gently.
Â
“Yangyang, help me take off my clothes.”
