- Chapter 10 - That Ridiculously Foolish Woman
The valet brought the car to the entrance. Qi Jiu reached for the keys, but Jiang Ciqiu stopped him.
“You really want to drive?”
The freshly eighteen-year-old boy was momentarily confused.
“If you have a car, drive your own. If not, take a taxi. I don’t want a kid who just turned eighteen driving my car.”
Qi Jiu asked, “Then how are you getting back?”
He had clearly seen Jiang Ciqiu drinking earlier.
Jiang Ciqiu swung her crossbody bag strap. “I’ll have someone pick me up, or call a designated driver. It’ll be quick.”
“Most likely, I’ll call a driver.”
Qi Jiu still tried to persuade her. “Miss Jiang, my driving skills are really good. You don’t have to worry about anything going wrong.”
“I said no,” Jiang Ciqiu replied, looking at him. “And about your family’s factory, I’ll mention it to my father. But whether he’ll use it depends on your own capabilities.”
“So, you don’t have to force yourself to drive me home just for your family’s sake. That’s it—it’s getting late. You should head back.”
“I—”
Jiang Ciqiu frowned slightly. “Hmm? Is there something else?”
Qi Jiu immediately shook his head. “No, nothing! Goodbye, Miss Jiang!”
He ran off quite a distance before Jiang Ciqiu finally turned her gaze away.
But then, the boy suddenly came sprinting back, panting heavily. “Miss Jiang, I know you don’t want to hang out with me, but thank you for helping me earlier.”
He bowed deeply before quickly running off again.
Jiang Ciqiu stood frozen for a long moment before suddenly bursting into laughter.
“So, this is the proper way to show gratitude, huh?”
Not like that White Moonlight, who nearly made her explode in anger.
The designated driver arrived quickly. Jiang Ciqiu handed him the keys and settled into the backseat, leaning against the window in a daze.
Her temper flared up fast but faded just as quickly. After Qi Jiu’s little interruption, she wasn’t angry anymore.
What remained was a sense of helplessness.
It had just occurred to her—even if she had awakened her consciousness in this novel’s world, what did it matter? If everything was subject to the “butterfly effect,” then no matter what she did, the plot would inevitably unfold.
It was only a matter of sooner or later.
For example, the female lead and Jiang Wanhe had already met ahead of time, and the White Moonlight had returned earlier than expected.
She couldn’t predict what exactly she might change—or whether it would hasten the downfall of the Jiang family.
As for delaying it…
Wait. Delaying…
A sudden realization struck Jiang Ciqiu. Outside the window, a passerby briefly locked eyes with her through the glass.
If the Jiang family’s ruin was solely tied to the romantic development between the male and female leads, then all she had to do was slow down their relationship’s progression.
They had already met, so cutting it off at the root was impossible.
But the deepening of their feelings didn’t rely solely on them—it was influenced by numerous external factors.
And the most crucial figure in all of this was that White Moonlight.
The woman walking on the sidewalk outside had changed out of her employee uniform from the club. Even in a simple T-shirt, she stood out effortlessly in the crowd.
She had been crouching earlier, playfully teasing a child by the roadside, but upon seeing Jiang Ciqiu, the smile on her face gradually faded.
Jiang Ciqiu rolled up the car window and leaned back against the seat, utterly exasperated.
“I refuse to believe that keeping them apart is such an impossible task.”
For now, her plan was simple: minimize contact with Chu Han. That woman didn’t like her, and she couldn’t stand her either.
So her main focus would be sabotaging Jiang Wanhe and the female lead’s interactions, with preventing Chu Han and Jiang Wanhe from meeting as a secondary goal.
Before figuring out the rules of this world, she decided to take it slow and play it safe.
After all, the initiative was entirely in her hands now.
—
Chu Han straightened up and waved goodbye to the child.
The eye-catching red sports car soon disappeared from view. She took a few steps back and stood beneath the shade of a tree.
Leaning against a streetlamp, she made a call. It rang for a long time before the person on the other end picked up.
The voice sounded hurried: “What’s up?”
Chu Han: “Can I stay at your place tonight?”
“You’re back in the country? Since when?”
“Not long ago. The day before yesterday, or maybe yesterday.”
“You’re not even sure yourself?”
“I arrived in the early hours. Don’t really remember.”
The other person didn’t hesitate at all before nodding: “Sure, but my place is pretty small. Hope you don’t mind.”
“Right now, I just need a place to stay. I was never some delicate young lady, you know—not as pampered as you think.”
“Alright, I’ll send you the address. Just come over. But I’m working overtime right now. The spare key is under the flowerpot by the door. You can let yourself in.”
Chu Han chuckled: “Got it. See you later, then.”
The other person let out a long sigh: “Not much later, honestly. I barely have any free time these days. I finally managed to land this VP position, but I’m young and have no connections. The rumors people at the company are spreading behind my back—who knows how many there are.”
“I have to put in the hours, prove myself. Otherwise, not only will this seat be uncomfortable, but I might get fired any day.”
Chu Han tapped the back of her phone and asked, “Any job openings at your company right now?”
“…Wait, Chu Han, you’re joking, right? Your family… really went bankrupt?”
“Completely and utterly bankrupt. You still didn’t believe me until now?”
“Ah… I thought you were pulling my leg, like back in high school.”
Shrugging, Chu Han said, “No joke. It’s real. My dad really jumped off a building too.”
Silence stretched on the other end before a frustrated thud against the table. “Sorry, I’ve been too busy to reach out. Job openings… I don’t think there are any.”
“Stay at my place for a few days. Once I wrap things up here, we’ll talk.”
Chu Han smiled faintly. “It’s fine. I’ll figure something out.”
“Seriously, Chu Han? You came back without any backup plan?”
“Plans got derailed. I had one, but not anymore.”
“What happened?”
The woman took a few steps to the side, watching the passing traffic.
“Ran into some ridiculous, stupid woman who ruined everything. The people in the States made things impossible for me, so I had no choice but to come back.”
“Ridiculous, stupid woman?”
The voice on the phone laughed—this was the first time she’d ever heard Chu Han use such “harsh” words.
“Just from that short description, I can tell how much you despise her.”
Chu Han exhaled sharply. “Honestly, it’s not entirely her fault. But I’m still mad. That woman’s always so self-righteous.”
As she spoke, she pulled a voice recorder from her pocket.
She’d been so close to succeeding, but Jiang Ciqiu had barged in and ruined everything.
“Always? So, it’s happened more than once? Now I’m really curious—what exactly did she do to make the famously unflappable Miss Chu this angry?”
Rubbing his temples, Chu Han said, “There’s nothing much to say.”
“Ah, I’d love to chat in detail, but unfortunately, I still have a ton of work left to finish.”
Chu Han responded, “Alright, we’ll talk later then.”
