- Chapter 12 - The Rumored Brother-Obsessed Miss Jiang
Bai Chen’an wasn’t just there as a chauffeur. He handled all the paperwork for Jiang Ciqiu and even gave her a tour of the office, making introductions everywhere.
If Jiang Ciqiu hadn’t insisted on setting up her own desk, he probably would have stayed to arrange everything for her.
“Really, Secretary Bai, you’ve done enough. At this point, you might as well hang a banner announcing I’m the Jiang family’s young mistress, so everyone treads carefully. I’m starting to wonder if you’re the one who actually wants this job.”
Bai Chen’an set down the things he’d carried in, exhaling slowly as he gave her a worried look.
“Young Miss, you know the only reason Mr. Jiang agreed to let you come is because he couldn’t refuse you, right…?”
Jiang Ciqiu closed her eyes in exasperation. “I won’t cause any trouble, Brother Chen’an, I promise!”
He patted her shoulder. “Alright, I’ll stop. Just focus on your work—consider it getting a head start on your internship.”
“Mr. Jiang said you’ll be held to internship standards. If you don’t meet them, you’ll have to do it all over again later.”
“I know, I know,” Jiang Ciqiu said, pushing him toward the door. “Go on, Secretary Bai, I’m sure my dad needs you more than I do.”
“Alright, alright, no need to push—I’m going.”
She stopped shoving, and Bai Chen’an turned to look at her one last time.
Seeing him about to speak, Jiang Ciqiu covered her ears.
The man sighed helplessly, ruffled her hair, and finally left.
“Ugh, how many times have I told you not to mess up my hair?!” she called after him.
Bai Chen’an didn’t turn around, just waved over his shoulder.
Once he was gone, Jiang Ciqiu gathered the pile of things he’d left and headed toward her department.
Passing by a small reception desk, she noticed the woman behind it smiling so brightly her eyes nearly disappeared.
Work Rule #1: Build good relationships with colleagues.
So, Jiang Ciqiu immediately dug out a chocolate bar from her pile and handed it over.
Everything in that pile had been prepared by Bai Chen’an—it seemed he’d gone shopping early that morning just to stock her up.
The receptionist gushed, “Thank you so much, Young Miss!”
The title made Jiang Ciqiu’s skin crawl. She forced a laugh. “Just call me by my name. We’re colleagues now—let’s get along!”
The receptionist looked flustered by the informality but before she could respond, a woman stormed past them.
Dressed in high heels, her curves accentuated by her outfit, she moved with purpose.
Jiang Ciqiu stared at the retreating figure, struck by how familiar she looked. “Who’s that?”
The receptionist shrugged, avoiding eye contact. “The daughter of the company downstairs. I don’t know her name, but I think her surname is Su.”
Their branch office wasn’t a standalone building—they’d leased unused floors above another company’s space. So, the floors below belonged to a different business entirely.
“Then why is she coming up here? Isn’t her company downstairs?”
The receptionist glanced at Jiang Ciqiu’s expression before hesitantly answering, “Sh-she’s probably here to see President Jiang.”
Jiang Ciqiu’s eyebrow shot up. “Jiang Wanhe?”
The receptionist nodded.
“A romantic entanglement, huh? Is Jiang Wanhe really that popular with women?”
“Of course! President Jiang is the perfect gentleman—polite, wealthy, handsome, and considerate. There isn’t a single woman in this company who doesn’t like him…”
Seeing Jiang Ciqiu’s indifferent expression, the receptionist quickly waved her hands in defense, “I-I-I meant your brother is a great person! I don’t have those kinds of feelings for Vice President Jiang!”
“Tsk,” Jiang Ciqiu shook her head, “Typical male lead.”
Every woman seems to fall for him.
To the receptionist, her reaction appeared as nothing more than a sister’s possessiveness toward her brother.
—No one knew where the rumor started in the company that Jiang Ciqiu and Jiang Wanhe had an exceptionally close relationship, with Jiang Ciqiu being extremely possessive of her brother.
Such gossip wasn’t particularly widespread within their social circle but had gained traction outside.
It was all that damn novel setting.
Ultimately, it was just to maintain the “purity” of Jiang Wanhe’s love life before he met the female lead.
Speaking of which, Jiang Ciqiu realized that since her consciousness awakened, she hadn’t inexplicably lost her memory and ended up somewhere warning people off.
“Hey, let me ask you something.”
Jiang Ciqiu beckoned the receptionist closer, lowering her voice, “Do you know about those incidents where I supposedly went around hitting people?”
The receptionist paled, thinking this was a veiled threat. She took a large step back, waving her hands so frantically they blurred.
“Young Miss, I really didn’t mean it like that! How could I dare to covet the Vice President? Please don’t fire me—I really need this job! I… I… If you want, you can slap me! I won’t fight back at all!”
She even leaned her face forward, offering it up.
Jiang Ciqiu rarely felt this flustered, “Keep your voice down! I’m not going to do anything to you!”
“I just want to know if you’ve heard why I supposedly attacked those women?”
From childhood, Jiang Ciqiu had never hit women or children.
Even when some women were particularly irritating, she’d only ever given warnings.
So, she had to clear this up.
Not daring to delay, the receptionist stammered, “I-I’ve heard a little…”
“Tell me.”
The receptionist hesitated, “Would this count as tattling?”
Jiang Ciqiu chuckled, “Of course not. I’m just asking. It’s not like my reputation was ever good to begin with, and it’s not your fault anyway.”
“But this young lady believes that once you get to know me, you’ll realize I’m nothing like the rumors.”
Seeing her amiable demeanor, the receptionist relaxed slightly. “What I heard was… that Young Miss Jiang is very possessive of her brother.”
“That’s it? No rumors about me being in love with my adopted brother from different parents?”
Seeing the receptionist’s expression, Jiang Ciqiu understood, “Ah, so there were. I knew it.”
The receptionist whispered, “Miss Jiang, you won’t blame me, right?”
“Of course not. Alright, I get the gist. Now I’m off to see my so-called deeply beloved brother.”
The receptionist wore a complicated expression but said nothing.
After a few steps, Jiang Ciqiu turned back and set down the pile of items, flashing a bright smile.
“Could you keep an eye on this box for me, receptionist sis? I’ll come back for it after the show.”
Dazzled by her beauty, the receptionist readily agreed, “Of course! I won’t leave this spot.”
Only after Jiang Ciqiu had walked far away did the receptionist process her words.
Did she say “the show”? What show?
Was the company organizing some theatrical performance?
Why hadn’t anyone told her? What a loss, what a loss!
