- Chapter 18 - Keeping a Beauty in a Golden Cage
The apartment was already furnished, and since it was needed urgently, there was no time for renovations.
The overall style was Scandinavian, with three bedrooms and two living rooms, offering a spacious layout.
When they arrived, the place was bustling with people coming and going, bringing in daily necessities and clothing.
The wheelchair had been prepared by Bai Chen’an. Jiang Ciqiu pushed the woman to sit by the sofa, watching the constant stream of people moving things in and out. She reached out and stopped a woman carrying winter clothes.
“Can you send over some more clothes?”
The woman responded professionally, smiling. “Of course, Miss Jiang. Please let us know the styles and brands you need, and we’ll do our best to prepare them for you.”
“Not for me—for that lady over there.” Jiang Ciqiu pointed at Chu Han.
“Understood. What are her measurements? Or would you prefer we take them now?”
Jiang Ciqiu glanced over. Chu Han was looking at her phone and seemed about to raise her eyes in response to the gaze.
Jiang Ciqiu quickly turned away, barely avoiding her line of sight.
“Go ask her yourselves and figure it out.”
“Certainly.”
“Wait—don’t charge this to my father’s account. Keep a separate record, and I’ll pay for it myself.”
“Of course, Miss Jiang.”
Nodding, Jiang Ciqiu walked toward the entrance.
Bai Chen’an was standing by the door, seemingly occupied with something. Seeing him typing on his phone, Jiang Ciqiu immediately reached out to block his screen, whispering sharply, “Chen’an, you promised not to tell my dad!”
“I—”
“You only agreed to pick me up because you swore you wouldn’t say anything! Are you going back on your word now?”
“I’m not!” Bai Chen’an laughed helplessly. “Another secretary just asked me about something, and I was replying.”
“If it were about my father’s business, you’d discuss it face-to-face or call. You wouldn’t text.”
Jiang Ciqiu eyed him skeptically. “Really?”
“If you don’t believe me, look for yourself.”
He handed her his phone.
Jiang Ciqiu studied him for a moment. “You’re the one offering—I didn’t ask.”
The chat was indeed with another secretary, and the conversation was about trivial matters.
Satisfied, Jiang Ciqiu averted her gaze. “Fine, I’ll trust you for now.”
“For now?” Bai Chen’an retrieved his phone, amused.
“What else? You’re my dad’s secretary, and you’ve ‘betrayed’ me so many times before. How can I trust you easily?”
Jiang Ciqiu lifted her chin, her expression haughty.
Bai Chen’an adjusted his stance, a smile playing at the corners of his eyes. “So, this is my test to regain your trust?”
“Consider it that, but it’s the only one. So,” Jiang Ciqiu said seriously, “absolutely—do not tell my dad or anyone else.”
It was the first time Bai Chen’an had seen Jiang Ciqiu so solemn. He nodded and couldn’t help asking, “Why? Is that young lady inside someone your parents shouldn’t know about?”
“Yes, and not just them—no one should know.”
Having worked by Mr. Jiang’s side for so long, Bai Chen’an had seen all sorts of things. His sharp, elite mind whirred into action. He leaned in slightly, bending down to whisper conspiratorially—
“Miss Jiang… are you keeping a beauty in a golden cage?”
“A—what?!”
Jiang Ciqiu nearly jumped. “Of course not! Bai Chen’an, what are you thinking?!”
Covering his nose—nearly collided with her sudden movement—the man straightened up, coughing lightly and adjusting his glasses.
“Oh, so it’s not that.”
“Huh? Brother Chen An, what kind of things have you been exposed to?”
Bai Chen’an looked at her: “Miss, you catch on quite quickly. Seems you know quite a bit yourself.”
“Isn’t it perfectly normal for a woman to know these things?”
“Normal…” Bai Chen’an raised an eyebrow and said slowly, “Is it?”
A heterosexual probably wouldn’t make that connection so quickly unless…
“You know as well as I do that this circle has all kinds of people. If a man can know, why can’t I?”
Secretary Bai nodded: “You’re absolutely right, Miss.”
Jiang Ciqiu hurriedly said: “Forget it, I won’t argue with you. Just don’t tell anyone about this, or I’ll never speak to you again!”
“As you wish, Miss.”
Watching her hurried retreating figure, Bai Chen’an shook his head with a faint smile.
The young mistress was still as childish as ever, showing no signs of growing up.
“Ugh, this is so annoying. I actually have something else to discuss with you.”
Bai Chen’an’s smile froze awkwardly on his face.
Fortunately, Jiang Ciqiu didn’t notice and continued: “I need a housekeeper—someone who can not only clean but also cook, and most importantly, knows how to take care of people.”
He nodded: “Understood. Actually, the master had already mentioned hiring one.”
Father Jiang knew his daughter, who had been waited on hand and foot since childhood, had no ability to take care of herself. She needed someone to look after her even when going out for a few days, let alone living alone.
He was deeply concerned and wanted someone to keep an eye on her.
Knowing her father’s intentions, Jiang Ciqiu added: “But not someone hired by my father. Find an agency that isn’t under his control.”
Bai Chen’an hesitated: “But I’m the master’s secretary.”
“Then just tell him it was my decision. I’m asking Brother Chen An to help me find a housekeeper.”
“So, Brother Chen An, will you help me?”
Bai Chen’an almost envisioned the chubby little girl who used to follow him around in childhood, and his heart softened instantly: “Alright, Brother Chen An promises.”
Jiang Ciqiu’s lips curved upward: “I knew my Brother Chen An would come back to me.”
With that, she walked back into the room and glanced at the sofa. The wheelchair that had been there was gone—Chu Han had moved it to the balcony.
The crowd in the room gradually thinned out as the person in charge brought the bill for Bai Chen’an to sign at the door.
The staff member Jiang Ciqiu had stopped earlier to place clothing orders called out: “Miss Jiang, we’ve placed your ordered clothes in the walk-in closet—yours on the left side, Miss Chu’s on the right.”
Jiang Ciqiu didn’t react to the first part, but froze at the next sentence: “Wait, what did you say? Where did you put them?”
“The walk-in closet.”
Jiang Ciqiu rushed to check the closet and came running back.
“Didn’t I tell you where to put them?” she asked.
The woman shook her head: “N-no, you didn’t.”
“I didn’t?”
“Did you…?”
“If I didn’t, why didn’t you ask? How could you just decide to put them in the walk-in closet? Couldn’t you tell that’s the master bedroom’s closet?”
“Miss Jiang, please don’t be angry. This was our mistake. We’ll move them to the room you specify right away.” The woman bowed repeatedly, practically writing “sorry” on her face.
Jiang Ciqiu waved her hand impatiently: “You’d better hurry. I’m exhausted and want to rest.”
The person who had just left was immediately called back to move the misplaced clothes.
Chu Han had somehow come in from the balcony without her noticing, twirling his phone with amused interest as he watched her.
“Can’t we share the walk-in closet?”
