- Chapter 22 - Just a Little Closeted
The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted it.
The atmosphere seemed to freeze. Chu Han didn’t move for a while, and that softness remained pressed against Jiang Ciqiu’s arm.
“…You’re not wearing a bra?”
All she heard was the woman’s ambiguous chuckle.
Jiang Ciqiu’s drowsy mind finally snapped awake and began racing.
How could she possibly explain that this wasn’t sexual harassment?
A hand suddenly reached up and, before Jiang Ciqiu could react, pressed firmly against her chest, fingers lightly squeezing.
Chu Han curved her lips. “Yours is pretty soft too.”
“And why would anyone wear a bra to sleep?” Her gaze drifted downward to Jiang Ciqiu’s chest. “Oh, you are wearing one.”
Jiang Ciqiu instantly held her breath, her entire face burning crimson under Chu Han’s watch.
Her voice trembled inexplicably. “Y-you can let go now, or I’ll sue you for sexual harassment.”
“…Sexual harassment?” Chu Han laughed. “It’s just a little squeeze.”
Oh. She was straight. A damn straight girl!
“Just let go already!”
The flush on Jiang Ciqiu’s face gradually faded, replaced by irritation.
“Fine, letting go. No need to overreact. Besides, it’s not like you’re the one who’s been left stranded here for so long. Why are you so mad?”
“Who said I’m mad?!”
Chu Han steadied herself against Jiang Ciqiu’s arm and straightened up, tilting her head slightly to soften the sound.
“Then stop yelling.”
The woman frowned, expression blank. “I’m tired. Hurry up and get me out of here. I want to go back to my room and sleep.”
“Sleep?” Jiang Ciqiu snorted, her bravado waning again. “I’m exhausted too.”
“Got it. Next time, I won’t wake you up to help me in the bathroom.”
“…”
Jiang Ciqiu had no comeback. She tightened her grip and slowly guided Chu Han to the door, helping her into the wheelchair.
“Good ni—”
The woman maneuvering the wheelchair turned smoothly and glided away without a backward glance.
The half-spoken “goodnight” stuck in Jiang Ciqiu’s throat. She muttered, “Seriously? Holding a grudge like that? I already apologized… Wait, did I? Or didn’t I?”
She scratched her messy hair. “Ugh, whatever. I’m too tired to care about you!”
Glancing back at the chaotic bathroom, she had no energy to clean up now. She turned off the lights, leaving only the bedside lamp, then walked back to the bed.
The mattress was soft—the same brand as the one at home. Definitely her dad’s doing.
She pulled back the covers and climbed in, arranging the sheets before lying down and reaching to turn off the lamp.
As her hand stretched out, her gaze fell on the exposed skin of her forearm.
That lingering softness seemed to still be there.
Jiang Ciqiu’s face flamed red again. She stretched further to switch off the lamp, then burrowed under the covers, staring at the indistinguishable ceiling as she willed the heat in her cheeks to fade.
Jiang Ciqiu was closeted. She couldn’t even remember exactly when it started.
Her adolescence had been a late bloomer. While the boys and girls around her were developing crushes on the opposite s3x, she was still preoccupied with having fun.
By the time she grew curious about love, the people around her had already become aware of social hierarchies. Innocence had soured, gradually morphing into the complexities of adulthood.
Back then, Jiang Ciqiu no longer expected to have friends. Gradually, she remained single until now.
Many handsome men came and went around her, some drawn to her family background, others to her looks.
Those people would say things like “what a perfect match,” but Jiang Ciqiu simply wasn’t interested. Even setting aside the matter of gender, she felt nothing for them.
No matter how much they insisted, Jiang Ciqiu never dated a single boyfriend.
Not even a fake one—she couldn’t be bothered to pretend.
Fortunately, her family never pressured her about it. In their eyes, Jiang Ciqiu was still a child—who would push a child to date?
“Ugh, so annoying! I really shouldn’t have agreed to this!”
Jiang Ciqiu cursed herself for being so impulsive. No matter how much money she had been offered, she should never have gotten herself into this mess.
Now look—she was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
She mocked herself inwardly.
She was just a little closeted girl who had never been in love. The horror stories she’d heard online—”never get involved with straight women”—were enough to terrify her.
She had never harmed any woman. Heaven better open its eyes and see clearly—don’t punish her for someone else’s mistakes!
Jiang Ciqiu clasped her hands together sincerely, praying.
The “white moonlight” type was clearly straight—straight as an arrow. Sure, she was beautiful, but getting involved with her would only lead to heartbreak and pain.
Still, Jiang Ciqiu doubted she’d ever fall for someone like that—after all, she was so annoying.
Thinking this, Jiang Ciqiu suddenly relaxed.
“Right, she’s so annoying. How could I ever like her?”
Problem solved. Miss Jiang finally pulled the blanket over herself, a faint smile on her lips as she drifted off to sleep.
She was at peace, but on the other side, Chu Han felt like she had a bone stuck in her throat.
She moved from her wheelchair to the bed and immediately called her old friend, who was still at the office preparing to pull an all-nighter.
By now, the company was empty. Jian Shu was in the deputy CEO’s private break room, brewing coffee.
The office at night was eerily quiet, with only the sound of running water and the rustling of the coffee packet. When the phone suddenly rang, she fumbled to answer it. “Good grief, Miss Chu! You scared me half to death!”
She patted her chest. “I was planning to work all night, but your call nearly sent me straight to the underworld.”
“What’s with the tone?” Chu Han noticed. “This groveling act isn’t like you.”
“It wasn’t before, but it’s about to be.”
“Are you getting demoted?”
“Bull!” Jian Shu grumbled. “Can’t you wish something good for your bestie?”
“Groveling usually means a demotion.”
Jian Shu leaned against the counter, exasperated. “Not happening. Even if someone gets demoted, it won’t be me.”
“It’s the boss’s daughter—that Miss Su—she’s being transferred under me as my assistant.”
“Assistant? Like, fetching coffee for you?”
Jian Shu thought for a moment. “Pretty much. I’ve met Miss Su a few times—she doesn’t seem very reliable. Life’s about to get tough.”
“Work was already piling up, and now this nuisance drops in.”
“Hey, you know what? Last time I was in the boss’s office handling a document, I ran into that Miss Su throwing a tantrum at her dad.”
She took a sip of coffee and frowned. “God, this stuff is bitter. I envy people who can stay alert just by drinking tea.”
“Then,” Jian Shu circled back and continued, “the reason she’s throwing tantrums at her dad is because she has a crush on Vice President Jiang from the company above ours—you know, Jiang Ciqiu’s older brother.”
“She’s demanding her father help her. What can he do? The Jiang Corporation has an entire headquarters building, and their subsidiaries occupy several floors above our company’s main office—not to mention they have multiple branches.”
“Although our company is strong too, compared to the Jiang Corporation, we’re just a small fish in a big pond. It’s downright overreaching.”
“Since her father can’t help her, she throws fits, insisting on turning everything upside down. She’s completely spoiled.”
“Speaking of being spoiled,” Jian Shu recalled something, “that Miss Jiang doesn’t seem as arrogant as the rumors suggest. She actually appears quite approachable.”
