- Chapter 23 - She's Really So Dumb
“Hmph,” Chu Han sneered coldly. “Easy to talk to… You say your piece, and she forgets hers. Truly easy to talk to.”
“Yikes…” Jian Shu rubbed her arms. “That creepy smile of yours is making me nervous being alone in the office. What, are you not happy living with Miss Jiang?”
“Happy! You seem to like her so much—why don’t you come live with her instead?”
“Wait, when did I say I liked her? What I meant was she’s not as spoiled as Miss Su!”
Chu Han: “You weren’t the one left in the bathroom for half an hour, so of course you don’t think she’s spoiled.”
“Hey!” Jian Shu couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Are you taking it out on me? What happened? Spill it.”
“You don’t sound the least bit sympathetic.”
“I think it’s hilarious. It’s rare to see our Miss Chu Han get worked up, especially over the same person in just a few days.”
Chu Han: “Laugh again, and I’m hanging up.”
“Fine, fine, no more laughing. So, are you okay? Didn’t catch a cold, did you?”
“Don’t know. Maybe. Almost died in there.”
Chu Han gritted her teeth. “She’s really so dumb.”
As an old friend, Jian Shu found amusement in the situation but still cared enough to ask, “Did you take any medicine?”
“No.”
“Take some, just to be safe. You can’t even walk right now—don’t let a fever hit you.”
“I’ll think about it tomorrow.”
Jian Shu didn’t need to guess—she knew this stubborn woman probably wouldn’t take it.
But knowing her nature, Jian Shu didn’t push further. Sipping her coffee as she walked out, she asked, “So what actually happened?”
Chu Han paused before recounting the whole incident from start to finish.
To her surprise, the first reaction from the other woman was an uncontrollable laugh.
“This is priceless. You two are priceless.”
Hearing that, Chu Han’s face darkened. “I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, wait—don’t! I’ll stop laughing.”
“Whose side are you even on?”
Jian Shu: “Yours, obviously.”
“You really don’t think she’s dumb?” Chu Han sounded genuinely puzzled.
“She was just tired…”
“Jian. Shu.”
The way Chu Han enunciated her name sent shivers down her spine.
“Fine, fine! She’s dumb! Dumb as a rock!”
“…Boring.”
“I called her dumb—what more do you want, Miss Chu?”
“Talking to you is pointless. Get back to work.”
“Alright, I’ll bring your stuff over tomorrow and make sure you take your meds.”
Chu Han thought for a moment. “That Miss Su starts work tomorrow?”
“Yeah, the boss is in a hurry. I’ve got a ton of unfinished work myself. He claims she’s here to help me, but I bet she’s clueless and will just get in the way.”
She let out a long sigh. “Whatever, I’ll take it one step at a time. I refuse to believe one assistant can cause that much trouble.”
“Get some sleep. You just got back to the country—I doubt you’ve had much rest.”
Jian Shu wasn’t wrong. These past few days, Chu Han had been running around nonstop, barely managing two hours of sleep yesterday.
After hanging up, Chu Han turned off the light and adjusted her position to avoid putting pressure on her cast.
In the darkness, her breathing was steady, but a whisper-soft voice slipped out: “Stupid woman.”
The next day, Jiang Ciqiu was jolted awake by her alarm. She reached out to turn it off, rubbed her eyes, and climbed out of bed.
She wasn’t the type to have morning grumpiness, just a bit dazed when first waking up.
Pushing open the bathroom door, she struggled to keep her eyes open as she fumbled her way inside, then mechanically began brushing her teeth.
Having just moved in, she was still getting used to the layout.
After freshening up, she headed to the walk-in closet to pick out an outfit.
Since she was going to work, she chose professional attire, then stared at the beauty in the full-length mirror for a long while.
Curving her lips into a smile, she murmured, “Perfect.”
Finally, she applied light makeup to tone down her striking features before leaving the room.
The living room was empty—Chu Han was probably still asleep. That suited her just fine; she didn’t want to see that annoying woman first thing in the morning anyway.
She opened the door and brought in the breakfast left outside. Jiang Ciqiu had been ordering it these past few mornings, planning to cancel the service once the housekeeper arrived.
After taking a few small bites, another knock sounded at the door.
Jiang Ciqiu knew who it was. She walked over and opened it.
“Brother Chen’an, can you talk to Dad about letting me go to the office on my own? It’s not far from here—no need to trouble you with picking me up.”
“It’s no trouble. It’s part of my job.”
After the polite exchange, Bai Chen’an added, “You’ll have to bring it up with the Chairman yourself. Me saying anything won’t help.”
Jiang Ciqiu nodded. “Fine. Brother Chen’an, have you eaten breakfast? I ordered some—want to have some?”
“I already ate.”
Bai Chen’an followed her inside, glancing around. “Where’s Miss Chu?”
“Still asleep, I guess. Don’t know.”
“Aren’t you going to call her for breakfast?”
Jiang Ciqiu’s gaze flickered away. “…She’ll come out and find food if she’s hungry.”
“With a leg in a cast and needing a wheelchair?”
“…”
“Did something happen between you two? Did you argue?” Bai Chen’an pulled out a chair and sat beside her.
“No.”
Seeing him still staring, she faced him and repeated, “No.”
At most, she’d just been subjected to some passive-aggressive remarks.
The proud Miss Jiang would never admit such an embarrassing thing to anyone—she’d take it to her grave.
But Bai Chen’an’s thoughts were clear: Got it. They argued.
Jiang Ciqiu ate a few more bites before setting the remaining portion aside.
“Secretary Bai, hurry up and find us a housekeeper.”
“Understood, Miss. I’m already interviewing candidates—she’ll arrive by tomorrow evening at the latest.”
Bai Chen’an adapted quickly, smoothly transitioning from her calling him “Brother Chen’an” to “Secretary Bai” and responding appropriately.
“Can’t she come today?”
“We still need to vet them carefully and go through some formalities.”
“Fine, tomorrow it is.” Jiang Ciqiu muttered, “It’s just one more day to endure…”
Bai Chen’an checked his watch. “It’s about time, Miss. We should head to work.”
Jiang Ciqiu stood up, glanced at the food container left on the side, nudged it closer to the edge of the table, then followed Bai Chen’an out.
Once in the car, she picked up her phone and stared at it blankly.
Bai Chen’an observed her while driving, noticing her screen wasn’t lit and her gaze was unfocused.
After a while, Jiang Ciqiu finally turned on her phone.
She began typing a message to the contact saved as “Annoying Woman.”
Bai Chen’an looked away, no longer watching.
Breakfast is on the table. Make sure you eat it…
After typing the line, she felt it sounded too caring. Dissatisfied, she deleted and rewrote it several times before settling on—
There’s breakfast on the table.
Just as she was worrying about whether she was being too cold, a sudden phone call popped up, startling Jiang Ciqiu. Her finger trembled and accidentally hit send.
