- Chapter 28 - Mistaken for Happiness
As the workday ended, a few people remained behind to work overtime.
Jiang Ciqiu picked up her bag, glanced back, then walked straight out without hesitation.
She felt she still needed time to come to terms with the fact that her internship was in the design department.
“An honest internship is the only way to get the certification, but this isn’t even my field, Dad!”
Jiang Ciqiu was practically nursing a headache.
No one dared to say a word about the young miss clocking out early.
The moment she stepped outside, she spotted Bai Chen’an waiting at the entrance. The well-fitted black suit accentuated his figure, and his neatly styled hair gave him an obedient, polished look.
With both looks and an intriguing contrast—despite everyone knowing he was Mr. Jiang’s secretary—passersby still stole glances at him.
Jiang Ciqiu smacked her forehead. “Oh right, I forgot to tell Dad not to send you to pick me up.”
Bai Chen’an smiled. “You’ve been quite forgetful lately, Miss. You only just remembered something from this morning.”
“No wonder I spent the whole afternoon feeling like I’d forgotten something. So, it was this.”
Jiang Ciqiu suddenly exhaled in relief, her restless heart finally settling.
She got into Bai Chen’an’s car, and the two exchanged idle chatter before arriving at Jiang Ciqiu’s new apartment.
Waving goodbye to Bai Chen’an, she headed upstairs alone.
It wasn’t until she opened the door and saw Chu Han waiting at the entrance that she realized the gravity of the situation.
“Oh, Miss Chu, waiting for me?”
Casually tossing out the words, Jiang Ciqiu bent down to change her shoes.
Hearing her even humming cheerfully, Chu Han curled her lips into a cold smile. “You seem to be in a good mood?”
“Hmm…” Jiang Ciqiu thought for a moment. “Not bad.”
After changing her shoes, she stepped onto the floor and walked past Chu Han to pour herself some water.
“Did you forget something?” Chu Han turned to look at her. “Jiang Ciqiu.”
Hearing her full name again, Jiang Ciqiu shivered involuntarily.
Stammering, she replied, “W-what now?”
She was inexplicably too guilty to even turn around, only daring to sip water with her back to Chu Han, trying to calm her suddenly racing heart.
Was it really such a big deal that she forgot to tell her dad not to let Bai Chen’an pick her up? Did Chu Han even need to know?
And even if she did, why did it matter? Why was she acting so accusatory?
Jiang Ciqiu grumbled inwardly.
“Fine, I get it. I’ll call him later, okay? Stop saying my name like that.”
“Later?” The woman behind her let out a cold laugh. “Isn’t that a bit too late?”
“No, it’s not. I’ll call whenever I want. Are you seriously upset about this too?”
Jiang Ciqiu turned and shrank under Chu Han’s icy glare, her own irritation flaring. “Chu Han, you’re overstepping.”
“Oh, so I’m not even allowed to be angry about my own stomach?”
“What do you mean, your stomach?” Jiang Ciqiu frowned, stepping aside. “You’re being ridiculous…”
As those words left her mouth, Chu Han’s expression darkened completely.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Glancing at Chu Han’s frosty demeanor, Jiang Ciqiu hurried to open the door.
Jian Shu lifted two bags in her hands. “I brought her things and some medicine I picked up.”
Jiang Ciqiu stepped aside to let her in, casually handing her a new pair of slippers. “Why bring medicine? We already have some here.”
“Really?” Jian Shu sounded puzzled as she straightened up after changing into slippers. “But when I just called Chu Han, she said no one was coming…”
Her voice suddenly rose a notch: “Ah, Chu Han, why is your face so red?”
She quickly brushed past Jiang Ciqiu and hurried over.
Reaching out to touch the wheelchair-bound woman’s face and forehead, Jian Shu’s tone turned urgent: “Chu Han, don’t you know you’re running a fever?”
The woman in the wheelchair replied coolly, “I know. That’s why I asked you to bring medicine.”
“But I didn’t buy any fever reducers! Why didn’t you tell me you had a fever earlier?”
Jiang Ciqiu took two steps forward to examine Chu Han’s face. Both her cheeks and the area beneath her eyes showed unusual redness.
Jian Shu knew all too well that Chu Han became even more tight-lipped in situations like this. Turning to the still bewildered Jiang Ciqiu, she asked bluntly:
“Didn’t you notice she had a fever?”
At this moment, she couldn’t care less about social niceties or Jiang Ciqiu’s privileged background, her tone far from friendly.
Jiang Ciqiu blinked: “I… I thought she was just happy…”
Happy?
Jian Shu couldn’t comprehend this person’s thought process.
Suppressing her irritation with a frown, she asked, “Do you have hot water?”
Jiang Ciqiu looked around before replying, “I’ll boil some.”
With a stony expression, Jian Shu pushed the wheelchair toward the coffee table while lecturing nonstop.
“Chu Han, you’re getting worse. I’ve always told you to take better care of your health, and now you’re running a fever just days after returning. Are you trying to kill me with worry?”
Chu Han glanced at the woman fumbling with the kettle and said calmly, “People get sick a few times every year.”
“A few times? I’d rather you never got sick at all, and you’re telling me you plan to get sick several times?!”
“Watch your language.”
Jian Shu snapped, “If you still want me as your friend, shut up and wait quietly for the hot water so you can take your medicine.”
Her tone made it clear this wasn’t a joke—she was genuinely upset. Chu Han obediently fell silent.
Jian Shu wasn’t one to anger easily, but when truly provoked, she became relentless. A single wrong word could set her off for hours.
The bespectacled woman had come straight from work, still in her light blue dress shirt tucked neatly into her women’s dress pants, without even changing clothes before rushing to the pharmacy and then here.
Now seated on the sofa, she leaned forward, her waist bending over her thighs as she rummaged through the medicine bag she’d brought. After examining several medications, she tossed them aside.
Standing up, she called to the person with her back turned at the kettle: “Miss Jiang, do you have any fever reducers?”
Jiang Ciqiu turned to respond, “Yes, we do.”
She then left the kettle to search through the TV cabinet, pulling out a first aid kit.
Placing the kit on the coffee table, she opened it to reveal neatly organized contents. After checking several boxes, she quickly located the fever medication.
“Here,” she handed the medicine to Jian Shu, then placed a few more items on the table, “and some cooling patches too.”
Jian Shu glanced at them: “Quite well-stocked.”
Under normal circumstances, Jiang Ciqiu would have proudly replied, “Of course, look whose home this is.”
But now, she just gave an awkward chuckle before standing up, mumbling something about needing to check the water, and quickly retreated.
Watching her retreating figure, Jian Shu muttered absently, “Is it just me, or is she acting strange?”
She wasn’t seeking anyone’s response, so after saying this, she immediately dismissed the matter from her mind.
Handing the items she had sorted out from her small suitcase to Chu Han, she said, “Check if these are what you needed. Let me know if anything’s missing, and I’ll organize them for you when I have time.”
After passing them over, she picked up a cooling patch to open, but before she could tear the packaging, her phone rang.
It was a call from Su Huaijin.
