Jian Shu hadn’t planned to answer the call. She was struggling with a stubborn package while glancing at her phone screen.
After a moment’s hesitation, she set aside the fever patch and picked up.
“Hello, Miss Su.”
“Why aren’t you home?”
“I’m out handling something.”
Su Huaijin didn’t mince words: “Then hurry back. I’m waiting at your door.”
“Miss Su, you’re at my place?” Jian Shu sounded puzzled.
Chu Han noticed her reaction and turned to look, her gaze questioning.
The woman adjusted her glasses and replied to the spoiled young lady on the line, “I’m busy right now.”
Su Huaijin retorted, “I don’t care if you’re busy. You need to come back now.”
Jian Shu glanced back at Chu Han, whose flushed cheeks betrayed her high fever, and lowered her voice with a frown. “I’m really sorry, but—”
The person on the phone seemed to yell something, making Jian Shu pull the phone away slightly, her brow furrowed tightly.
Chu Han could almost hear the distorted voice crackling through the receiver.
Jian Shu looked at her once more before bringing the phone closer and saying slowly, “Fine, I’ll be right back.” Then she hung up.
Chu Han waited until she turned around before asking, “Leaving?”
The woman nodded helplessly, gesturing at her phone with clear annoyance. “She’s threatening me.” She shrugged. “But I don’t have a choice. This is my only job, and I need it.”
“Understood,” Chu Han replied with a nod. “Go ahead.”
Jian Shu sighed, eyeing the fever patch in her hand. “She’s impatient. I’ll call you later—remember to take your meds.”
Only after Chu Han agreed did Jian Shu walks toward Jiang Ciqiu, holding the patch.
“Miss Jiang—”
“Ah—!”
Startled by Jian Shu’s voice, Jiang Ciqiu spun around, arms wrapping tightly around herself.
Jian Shu studied her face, catching a flicker of guilt in her evasive expression.
But now wasn’t the time for teasing. She held out the fever patch and explained.
As Jiang Ciqiu listened, her expression shifted into something awkwardly strained.
Jian Shu, preoccupied with the unreasonable young mistress, didn’t notice the subtle change.
“So, I’ll have to trouble you with this, Miss Jiang.”
Jiang Ciqiu forced a hollow smile, accepting the patch mechanically. “No trouble at all.”
The reasons were laid out plainly—though not explicitly stated, they concerned Jian Shu’s career. Jiang Ciqiu had no grounds to ask her to stay and deal with things here.
After all, she’d just realized she might have made a ridiculous mistake—one she couldn’t brush off.
But Young Miss Jiang couldn’t bring herself to happily send off the third person in the house, so she replied belatedly, “Oh… take care.”
Jian Shu found her odd and gave her another look.
After a pause, she added a few words on behalf of her friend:
“Chu Han gets a bit temperamental when she’s sick. She won’t say anything directly if you ask.”
Jiang Ciqiu thought: She’s sarcastic even when she’s not sick.
“Also, she doesn’t fall ill often, but when she does, it’s severe. If she isn’t cared for properly, the fever can easily spread to her lungs.”
Hearing this, Jiang Ciqiu said, “Then you should find someone proper to take care of her. I’m not up to it.”
“That’s exactly the problem,” Jian Shu pouted, looking helpless. “She’s incredibly stubborn and hates being taken care of by others.”
Speaking of this, she seemed to recall something from the past and said with a hint of melancholy, “Back when we were in school, she toughed it out once. If I hadn’t noticed and taken her to the hospital, her lungs would’ve been ruined.”
Jiang Ciqiu frowned slightly and glanced at the person sitting in the wheelchair with her back turned to them, watching TV as if nothing was wrong.
“Why be so stubborn about something like this?”
Jian Shu replied, “I don’t get it either, but that’s just how she is.”
Checking the time, the woman grew impatient. “I have to go now. Sorry to trouble you, Miss Jiang.”
Jiang Ciqiu forced a smile. “Fine.”
“The water’s boiled,” Jian Shu reminded her.
Jiang Ciqiu nodded to show she understood.
Jian Shu walked over and patted Chu Han on the shoulder, then grabbed her bag from the sofa. After exchanging a few more words with Chu Han, she left.
With the soft click of the door closing, the house was left with just the two of them.
Jiang Ciqiu immediately felt at a loss. After hesitating for a while, she finally poured some warm water into a cup and brought it over.
Chu Han heard her approach but didn’t even glance her way, keeping her eyes fixed on the TV.
Jiang Ciqiu looked at what was playing—an animated commercial, seemingly for children’s products.
Placing the cup of warm water on the coffee table, Jiang Ciqiu sat down on the sofa, cautiously observing Chu Han’s expression.
There was nothing unusual, but there was also no sign she intended to acknowledge her.
Since Chu Han remained silent, Jiang Ciqiu didn’t break the quiet either. She reached for the fever medicine, opened the box, and carefully read the dosage instructions.
Without thinking, she blurted out, “You’re an adult, right?”
“…”
Naturally, the other person didn’t respond to such an obvious question, leaving Jiang Ciqiu awkward for a moment.
After confirming the dosage, Jiang Ciqiu took two pills and placed them in her palm.
She then picked up the cup and half-rose to hand both to Chu Han.
But when she looked up, she realized Chu Han had been staring at her—for who knows how long.
Her eyes gleamed slightly from the light, her pupils slightly contracted, like a starving wolf in the forest locking onto its prey.
Jiang Ciqiu felt a faint chill run down her spine.
She feigned toughness and snapped, “What are you looking at?”
Expecting a sarcastic retort, she was surprised when Chu Han lowered her gaze and ignored her.
Jiang Ciqiu felt unsettled but quickly composed herself and handed over the medicine.
“Take it now.”
Chu Han accepted it, tested the water temperature, then put the pills in her mouth and swallowed them with a sip of water.
As she handed the cup back, she met Jiang Ciqiu’s eyes and said calmly, “Next time, don’t put my medicine in your palm. You’re sweating—it’s sticky.”
Jiang Ciqiu opened her hand and glanced down. Sure enough, it was damp.
Chu Han slowly added, “It’s kind of gross.”
That comment shattered Jiang Ciqiu’s composure. In all her life, no one had ever called her gross.
Though she’d probably feel the same in Chu Han’s position, she still retorted, “It’s just a little sweat. What’s the big deal? Stop being so fussy.”
Chu Han didn’t respond, merely smoothing the skirt over her legs before turning her attention back to the television.
Jiang Ciqiu glanced at her twice, finding the atmosphere strange. The discomfort of sitting together in silence made her feel somewhat irritated.
So, she reached for the medicine bag, wanting to occupy herself with something.
After rummaging through it, she realized all the medications inside were duplicates of what was already in the medical kit. She asked, “Chu Han, didn’t you know we already had these medicines here?”
Without even blinking, Chu Han replied, “I did.”
“Then why did you ask Jian Shu to buy more?”
She said, “I thought we didn’t have enough.”
“That’s impossible,” Jiang Ciqiu picked up the medical kit. “There’s plenty here—two boxes of each kind.”
The woman let out a soft laugh.
Jiang Ciqiu looked over and saw her turn her head slightly, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of her lips.
That smile carried a hint of amusement and mockery.
“I thought it wasn’t enough. That little bit wouldn’t have been enough to fill me up.”
