- Chapter 4 - The Cheap Brother
As soon as Jiang Ciqiu stepped off the plane, she spotted her parents waiting at the entrance. Standing beside them was a man dressed in a black suit.
As they approached, the man stepped forward to take the small suitcase she was pulling.
Jiang Ciqiu let out a light hum and handed the suitcase over.
“Secretary Bai, it seems your workload hasn’t been too heavy lately.”
The young man smiled, his gold-rimmed glasses resting on his high nose bridge, giving him such an elegant air that he looked less like a secretary and more like the young CEO of some listed company.
“Indeed, it hasn’t been too busy. The young miss hasn’t assigned me much work recently.”
“Hmph,” Jiang Ciqiu glared at him half-heartedly, “Don’t you have your own work to do? Do I really need to assign you tasks?”
“My job is to take good care of the young miss.”
“Tch, you corporate types always talk so sweetly, but you’re always sneaking reports about me.”
Jiang’s mother frowned disapprovingly, her lips pursed in concern. “Chen’an said you sounded in pain over the phone. How could you not tell your father and me about something like this? Were you really planning to keep it from us if not for Chen’an?”
“It’s nothing, Mom.” Jiang Ciqiu clung to her mother’s arm, using her usual tactics. “I’m fine, really. Don’t I know my own body best…?”
Before her mother could respond, her father spoke up with a deep frown. “The hospital appointment is already scheduled. We’re going now.”
“Dad, I really—”
“No room for negotiation.”
With that, Jiang’s father turned and walked away.
Bai Chen’an pulled the suitcase along and smiled at her. “This way, miss.”
Her mother also gave her a waiting look. Jiang Ciqiu had no choice left. She exhaled deeply. “Fine, let’s go.”
The hospital was the best in Beichang City, and the doctor was the city’s top specialist. After carefully reviewing Jiang Ciqiu’s medical report under the anxious gazes of her parents, he finally said, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong.”
“Really? Not even the slightest issue with her brain?”
Jiang Ciqiu interjected, “Daddy, I told you I’m completely fine. Why won’t you believe me?”
“And Daddy, what do you mean by ‘not even the slightest issue with her brain’? You’ve watched me grow up—do I seem like someone with brain problems?”
The doctor reassured them, “There really is no issue. Your daughter is in perfect health.”
Jiang Ciqiu shrugged, giving a look that said, “See?”
After a full-body checkup and the doctor’s confirmation, her parents finally relaxed.
They took Jiang Ciqiu out for lunch before heading home.
Her father still had work at the company, and her mother had afternoon tea plans with other socialites, so both left shortly after, leaving Jiang Ciqiu alone in the massive villa.
Without any memories of her time in the U.S., she couldn’t recall how well she had rested there, but the journey back had been exhausting. She went straight to her room on the second floor to sleep.
By the time she woke up, it was already evening.
Rubbing her eyes, she descended the stairs, her hand barely gripping the railing.
Her throat was dry from sleep, so she headed to pour herself some water. As she did, she asked, “Uncle Bai, are Mom and Dad back yet?”
The butler, Bai, walked in. “Miss, your mother will be home soon. Your father will take a bit longer.”
Jiang Ciqiu nodded, then poured herself a glass of water. After a pause, she added, “What has Jiang Wanhe been up to lately?”
Neither of them had moved out, so Jiang Ciqiu would occasionally see him around.
But recently, Jiang Wanhe hadn’t returned to the villa for quite some time.
When Butler Bai heard her inquire about Jiang Wanhe, he immediately understood that the young miss was asking why her brother hadn’t come home. He explained, “The young master has been busy with a rather tricky project at the subsidiary company, so he’s been staying at the office.”
Jiang Ciqiu’s hand, holding her glass of water, paused. Her long lashes trembled slightly before she slowly lifted her gaze, revealing her light-colored eyes.
“The real estate project with the Chen family in the south?”
“Yes, that’s the one.” Butler Bai nodded. “Miss, how did you know about this?”
Truth be told, the rumors weren’t wrong—the eldest daughter of the Jiang family had little interest in the family business, and her parents had never pressured her about inheritance.
She had always lived freely, doted on by the entire Jiang family.
She probably wasn’t even familiar with the company’s operations, let alone Jiang Wanhe’s new venture into real estate—a field the Jiangs had no experience in. They had built their fortune on the automotive industry before expanding into catering and electronics.
So, for Jiang Ciqiu to accurately name the project was… suspicious, to say the least.
Butler Bai’s extra question was only natural.
Under Bai Shu’s hopeful gaze—as if thinking, My young miss has finally come to her senses!—Jiang Ciqiu merely smiled without answering and turned to sit on the living room sofa.
How did she know?
Of course, she didn’t!
The real estate project with the Chen family in the south—that was something from those sudden, intrusive memories.
In them, Jiang Wanhe had earned their father’s approval through this very project. Soon after, he was transferred from the subsidiary to the main company.
And that was the first step in his slow devouring of the Jiang family.
The flickering colors on the TV screen reflected in Jiang Ciqiu’s unfocused eyes, forming meaningless images.
Once again, she had to ask herself—Novel world, self-awareness, those memories… Can any of it be trusted?
Did Jiang Wanhe, that so-called brother of hers, truly hate the entire Jiang family as much as those memories suggested?
“Damn it!” Jiang Ciqiu pressed her fingers to her temples, frustrated. “What kind of nonsense is this? If I’m going to ‘awaken,’ at least give me an omniscient perspective. Why is everything in first-person? What am I even supposed to understand?”
All she knew was that, in the end, everyone had to make way for the so-called love story between the male and female leads.
And in those memories, she had been obsessed with Jiang Wanhe.
One of the reasons she refused to believe them was that the person in them didn’t feel like her at all.
When her parents had adopted the orphaned son of their late friends, Jiang Ciqiu hadn’t minded.
She had never lacked for love, and they had treated Jiang Wanhe as their own.
But Jiang Wanhe’s attitude toward the Jiang family had always been ambiguous—outwardly affectionate, yet Jiang Ciqiu always felt that warmth was veiled, distant.
As a child, she used to call him gege—big brother. But over time, she started addressing him by his full name.
Now, the two existed in a strange, delicate balance.
She ignored him; he didn’t seek her out. They lived their separate lives, neither crossing the other’s path.
They had never fought. They had simply drifted apart, as if it were always meant to be that way.
And while Jiang Ciqiu’s reputation in society was terrible, Jiang Wanhe’s was impeccable.
It had reached the point where outsiders even lamented why Jiang Wanhe wasn’t actually the Jiang family’s biological child.
Taking a deep breath, Jiang Ciqiu made a decision—if her memories overlapped with reality again, she would believe this was indeed the world of the novel.
She was convinced there couldn’t be so many coincidences in the world.
Everything fit together too perfectly. Refusing to acknowledge it now would just be self-deception.
The sound of conversation at the door snapped her back to reality. Uncle Bai had mentioned earlier that her mother would return soon, but she still hadn’t arrived—likely because she was with her father.
She stood up. “Mom, Dad, I’m starving—”
The figures of three people came into view. Her father was smiling warmly, the fine wrinkles at the corners of his eyes deepening as he repeatedly patted Jiang Wanhe’s suited shoulder.
Her mother also wore an expression of pride and satisfaction.
Her voice drew all three pairs of eyes toward her.
The young man was immaculate from head to toe, his deep-set eyes accentuated by high cheekbones.
Her mother beckoned. “Ye Zi, come here! We have some good news to celebrate.”
“…The Chen family’s real estate deal?”
“Oh my, how did you know? That’s exactly it! Your brother secured the deal!”
“…”
It overlapped. So soon, it overlapped again—and this time, two things at once.
The project being finalized, and Jiang Wanhe coming home for dinner.
But his reason for returning wasn’t to boast about his achievements and request a transfer to headquarters—it was to move out.
The impeccably groomed man turned his gaze toward her, the corners of his lips lifting into a handsome curve, his voice low and husky.
“Ye Zi, long time no see.”
