- Chapter 5 - Altering the Plot
“Long time no see.” This opening line felt oddly comedic for the “Jiang siblings” who had grown up together.
Jiang Ciqiu glanced up at him, her expression blank as she calmly replied, “Mm.”
To the Jiang parents, this exchange made Jiang Ciqiu seem somewhat cold. They exchanged a glance, guessing that the siblings might have had some disagreement.
But nothing couldn’t be resolved over a meal.
They called the two to the dining table, where dishes had already been served by Butler Bai. The cook’s skills were as impeccable as ever—each dish was a feast for the eyes, nose, and palate, making one’s mouth water just by looking.
The Jiang household didn’t adhere to the traditional “head of the family seating arrangement.” Instead, they sat facing each other, with no chair placed at the so-called “head” position.
Naturally, Mr. and Mrs. Jiang sat together, leaving Jiang Ciqiu no choice but to sit beside Jiang Wanhe.
Come to think of it, the last time the four of them had shared a meal was over two years ago.
Back then, Jiang Ciqiu had just graduated from high school, and the family had thrown a small celebration for her university acceptance.
Since then, the two siblings had rarely seen each other, and even when they did, their interactions were limited to polite greetings.
Jiang Ciqiu lowered her head, mechanically picking at her food, chewing each bite for what felt like an eternity before swallowing.
Mr. and Mrs. Jiang first inquired about Jiang Wanhe’s work at the company before shifting the conversation to a real estate project.
Jiang Wanhe maintained a smile throughout, showing no trace of the resentment he harbored toward the Jiang family.
At most, there was a subtle distance beneath the surface of their closeness.
Listening to their discussion, Jiang Ciqiu suddenly spoke up, “Is that project specifically assigned to you as the lead?”
Mr. Jiang chuckled. “Silly child, your brother personally negotiated this deal. Who else would take charge if not him?”
To everyone’s surprise, Jiang Wanhe lowered his gaze. “…They specifically requested Hu Qing to handle it.”
Hu Qing—another highly capable deputy general manager at the subsidiary company.
Mr. Jiang’s expression flickered briefly before he reassured him, “It’s fine. Hu Qing is a veteran, and you’re still new. Take it slow—no need to stress too much.”
“Yeah, no need to stress. After all, it’ll end up being yours anyway.”
“Xiao Ye, what did you say?”
“Huh?” Jiang Ciqiu looked up, stirring her chopsticks in her bowl. “Nothing.”
She had accidentally voiced her thoughts aloud.
Originally, Hu Qing had been assigned to the project, but midway through, Jiang Wanhe had somehow managed to push him aside and take over as the lead.
It was precisely this move that earned Mr. Jiang’s admiration, leading to Jiang Wanhe’s eventual transfer to the headquarters after the project’s completion.
But in the original timeline, it should have been Mr. Jiang who brought this up. Jiang Ciqiu had disrupted the flow of conversation by mentioning it first.
With the original discussion derailed, they moved on to other trivial topics.
Parents always worried about their children’s romantic lives, and Mr. and Mrs. Jiang were no exception. Soon, they steered the conversation toward Jiang Wanhe’s love life.
“Wanhe, don’t bury yourself in work all the time. These things take time—there’s no rush. By the way, have you met any girls you’re interested in lately?”
Hearing this, Jiang Ciqiu subtly glanced at him. Jiang Wanhe’s expression remained indifferent, his faint smile betraying little interest.
“Not in a hurry.”
For now, he wasn’t in a hurry. But once he met the female lead, his tune would change entirely.
After a series of heart-wrenching trials, he’d be willing to hand the entire Jiang family over to her.
In the end, that’s exactly what he did.
Thinking of this, Jiang Ciqiu let out a mocking laugh. She had never been one to hide her feelings—if she had something to say, she always said it outright.
So, she made no effort to lower her voice. Jiang Wanhe paused mid-conversation and turned to look at her.
“Ye Zi, what’s wrong?”
Her parents also glanced over, their expressions tinged with slight annoyance and disapproval, but mostly with a silent plea for her to rein it in.
“Oh,” Jiang Ciqiu met their gazes, idly stirring the meager portion of rice in her bowl with her chopsticks. “This meal is just… bland.”
“How could that be? I think it’s quite good. Aunt Li’s cooking is as excellent as ever,” her mother said, puzzled.
Jiang Ciqiu shrugged. “Maybe I just don’t have much of an appetite.”
“Oh, by the way, Brother.”
She only ever called him “Brother” in front of their parents.
Jiang Wanhe turned to her with an easy, indulgent smile, as if humoring a younger sister. “What is it, Ye Zi?”
“Are you staying at home tonight?”
If she wasn’t mistaken, Jiang Wanhe would say—
“I actually came back to discuss this. Mom, Dad, I want to move out.”
Jiang Ciqiu exhaled softly. Just as expected—word for word, just like in the novel.
Her parents were stunned, immediately asking why.
He explained that he wanted to focus on his work at the company, to build something of his own while he was still young.
Seeing his determined expression, their parents gradually softened. Just as they were about to relent, Jiang Ciqiu spoke up.
“Don’t, Brother. Aren’t we all living together just fine as a family?”
“Besides, if you stay, you can always consult Dad if you run into any difficulties.”
Jiang Wanhe replied, “But I’m working in real estate.”
“And it’s your first time, right? Everyone needs time to learn. Dad has decades of business experience—real estate is nothing to him.”
“Also, now that we’re grown up, we’re both busy with our careers. We already spend so little time with Mom and Dad. If you move out, we’ll have even fewer chances to be together.”
“As your sister, I’d like to spend more time with you too.”
“…” Jiang Wanhe stared at her, his expression flickering briefly before he composed himself.
“Mom, Dad, what do you think?” He still left the final decision to them.
“There will be plenty of time later, but opportunities like this don’t come often.”
Her mother, who had been wavering, hesitated again. Her father frowned in thought before asking, “Is this really necessary?”
Jiang Wanhe said, “I don’t want to regret it.”
Her father looked between his children, then at his wife, before finally speaking. “I see both sides. But… Wanhe, stay home a little longer. If you run into trouble, you can always talk to me. If you still feel moving out is better later, we’ll discuss it then.”
“Now, let’s just enjoy the meal.”
Jiang Ciqiu lowered her eyes slightly, a faint smile curving her lips. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Jiang Wanhe’s gaze.
She ignored him. Suddenly, the food in front of her tasted much better.
Who knew altering the plotline could be so simple?
There was no way she’d let the story unfold so smoothly—of course she had to stir up some trouble.
Destroy the Jiang family? Hand it over to someone else? Not a chance.
Oh, male lead? The chosen one? Please.
Jiang Ciqiu had lived a smooth life, growing up recklessly without a care in the world—she’d never been afraid of anything.
As a member of the Jiang family, she had spent twenty-one years indulging in luxury. Now, it was time for her to give something back.
“A thankless wolf that refuses to be tamed should be sent back to the barren forest where it belongs.”
Not draped in white robes, pretending to be some noble prince.
