- Chapter 6 - Only Oneself to Rely On
The most effective way to destroy a wolf in sheep’s clothing was to directly reveal its true nature to Jiang’s parents.
“So… Ye Zi, what exactly are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying… ah… uh…”
Jiang Ciqiu had been in the study for half an hour. Her father watched her mouth move, but not a single word reached his ears.
“What are you saying?” He rubbed his temples. “Ye Zi, stop fooling around. Daddy still has some company matters to handle. If you don’t have anything important, go back to bed.”
“Dad, can’t you hear me?”
“Are you saying something? You’ve been like this for over half an hour—mouthing words without any sound. Your daddy can’t read lips, you know.”
Jiang’s father smiled helplessly and nudged her toward the door by her shoulders. “Good girl, honestly, I don’t have time to play right now.”
“Dad, Dad! What if I write it down for you?”
“Alright, alright. Go back and write it first, then I’ll take a look, okay?”
Jiang Ciqiu was pushed out the door. Her father waved. “Goodnight, daughter.”
The door closed. Jiang Ciqiu frowned in confusion, stood there for a moment, then turned and headed upstairs.
At the stairway, she ran into Jiang Wanhe, who was coming down for a glass of water. The man’s features were sharp—the very picture of a domineering CEO.
At home, he let his bangs fall loosely, and his casual loungewear gave him a uniquely relaxed air.
He was handsome, but that charm only worked on other women and the Jiang Ciqiu from his memories.
Seeing her, he flashed a smile. “Ye Zi…”
Jiang Ciqiu brushed past him, her voice icy. “Don’t call me that.”
“Honestly, I don’t know why you dislike me so much,” the man said behind her, a hint of sorrow in his tone.
Jiang Ciqiu paused mid-step. One hand resting on the railing, she turned to look down at him from above.
He continued, “Maybe in the past, I was a bit distant as an older brother, but we’re still siblings. Since coming back, I feel like you resent me even more. I don’t know why. Ye Zi, can you tell me? I’ll change.”
Jiang Ciqiu studied him for a moment, then tilted her head.
“There’s nothing you need to change. It’s me who should.”
“What?”
“Jiang Wanhe, don’t you think my life has been too comfortable?”
Her index finger tapped against the railing. She glanced at the steps beneath her and descended one.
Answering her own question, she said, “I think it’s been way too comfortable. The family’s dumped everything on you—that must be exhausting.”
Jiang Wanhe’s eyes flickered. “Ye Zi, you’re still in college. There’s no need to rush—”
Jiang Ciqiu shook her head, cutting him off. “No, no, no. Brother, you’ve worked too hard. If such a big family relies solely on you in the future, it’ll be too much.”
“As Mom and Dad’s daughter, and as your sister, I can’t keep indulging like this.”
“Ye Zi…”
“Alright, it’s settled then. Brother, you can rest easy living at home from now on. You don’t have to worry so much about the company anymore—after all, you’ve got us. Family is your eternal support. Don’t carry so much pressure.”
With that, Jiang Ciqiu turned and continued upstairs. The man behind her didn’t call out again. The moment she turned away, his smile vanished, replaced by a dark glare fixed on her retreating figure.
Jiang Ciqiu closed her bedroom door and smiled in satisfaction.
She still wasn’t interested in inheriting the family fortune—those words were just said to provoke Jiang Wanhe.
Moreover, she was curious whether these pressures, absent from the original plot, could change anything.
After laughing enough, she walked to the desk, sat down, and pulled out a notebook and pen to write about this being a fictional world.
But no matter how many times she tried, not a single word would appear on the page.
To confirm it wasn’t the pen running out of ink, she scribbled a few meaningless sentences.
Turns out, the pen wasn’t the issue.
Jiang Ciqiu finally understood—any information revealing the truth of this world was impossible to convey.
So even if she sought out a lip-reader, they wouldn’t be able to decipher a single word.
This world would always find a way to stop her.
Which meant she was on her own.
Then, would those words she spat out to anger Jiang Wanhe become her future tactics?
Inheriting the family business? How utterly boring!
Jiang Ciqiu exhaled heavily, already feeling disinterested.
Just then, her phone rang.
Without looking, she answered and pressed it to her ear. “Yeah, who is it?”
“Hey, our esteemed Miss Jiang finally picks up! Heard you went to M Country to beat someone up?”
“Get to the point,” Jiang Ciqiu said impatiently.
Hearing her tone, the caller immediately straightened up. “Right, so, there’s a gathering tomorrow at the Summer New Clubhouse. Care to grace us with your presence?”
She was about to refuse, but her irritation needed an outlet—a meaningless party would do.
“What time?”
“Eight p.m., VIP Room 5026. We’ll all be waiting for your grand arrival.”
Jiang Ciqiu ended the call and tossed her phone onto the bed.
Grand arrival indeed. If not for her, these people’s families might never have had any ties to the Jiang Corporation.
By old-world etiquette, they should’ve been kowtowing in gratitude.
But Jiang Ciqiu didn’t care—she could cut them off anytime.
The next evening at eight, the Jiang heiress appeared punctually outside VIP Room 5026 at the Summer New Clubhouse.
The group welcomed her with eager enthusiasm. The moment she sat down, a relentless stream of flattery poured in from all sides—from her hair to her stiletto heels, from her outfit to her makeup.
Jiang Ciqiu remained indifferent, though she did smile faintly in amusement.
No one disliked praise, but few, like her, could listen to blatantly insincere, self-serving compliments and still find it entertaining.
Then someone shifted from praising her appearance to her character.
Jiang Ciqiu turned her gaze toward them, her eyes eerily unreadable in the dim light.
Her smile faded, leaving only a hollow curve at her lips. “Kind-hearted?”
Those who had been around her long enough sensed her displeasure. The speaker, however, was clearly a newcomer brought in by someone else, hoping to curry favor with the Jiang heiress for personal gain.
Instead, they had miscalculated spectacularly.
The person froze, too afraid to speak or meet Jiang Ciqiu’s gaze, trembling like a convict awaiting sentencing.
“Enough nonsense.” Jiang Ciqiu stood and walked out.
The one who had called her asked, “Miss Jiang, leaving already?”
“Going to the restroom. What, you wanna come too?”
“I’d love to, but I’m a man.”
Jiang Ciqiu didn’t respond and walked out alone, closing the door behind her.
Only after the door shut did those inside dare to speak about the person who’d just left.
“Who brought you here? Don’t you know Jiang Ciqiu hates it most when people praise her inner qualities? You might not care about living, but we do. Keep your mouth shut, understand?”
“But… why?”
“Who cares why? Just say what she wants to hear.”
“And screw inner beauty. How many people in our circle actually have beautiful souls? Everyone’s heart would stink if you cut it open.”
