Chapter 15: I Feel Like Staying Here Is More Dangerous
After returning from the restroom, Qiao Sijin felt uneasy, hoping that the man from earlier wouldn’t spread what had happened between her and Fu Qingyun — that beautiful mistake.
“Miss Qiao, about just now…”
The man began in a low voice.
Qiao Sijin sighed internally. She knew it wasn’t over yet. She should’ve cut things off cleanly and rushed to the bathroom, leaving the two of them behind.
Now look at this mess.
“Just pretend you didn’t see anything, or else… you know the consequences.”
Qiao Sijin made a slicing motion across her neck, clearly startling the man. She sheepishly rubbed her own neck.
“Boss, what are you two talking about?”
Li Ke had just finished her phone call and walked over, sensing something off about the atmosphere between them.
Could it be that the boss had thrown another diva tantrum?
No way. That problem had been long cured. If she had to pinpoint when it changed, Li Ke frowned and thought — it must have been when Qiao Sijin and Fu Qingyun started showing signs of breaking up.
Once you lose your backer, even the boss learns to tone things down.
This world really is cold and realistic.
“Ahem… it was nothing, nothing at all. Miss Qiao and I were just talking about how pleasant our next collaboration will be.”
The man’s words were stuttered, but Qiao Sijin maintained a perfectly professional expression, placing her palms together beneath her chin, nodding in agreement.
“That’s right. Strictly professional.”
Wow, how moving.
Outside of filming, Li Ke had never seen her boss care about anything. What a miracle!
If this kept up, maybe things would get easier for her.
Maybe she could even get control of the boss’s social media accounts back.
That is… as long as the boss doesn’t go around liking gossip about colleagues’ divorces, cheating scandals, or domestic violence rumors.
Those tabloids are pure speculation — nothing confirmed. But when Qiao Sijin accidentally liked one, it basically confirmed it as fact.
That was a disaster. Not only did it ignite the other PR teams’ keyboards, their own inboxes and company accounts got bombarded by angry fans.
Total chaos.
“Really, boss? You seem so lively and in high spirits tonight.”
Could she stay like this forever?
Of course, Li Ke could only think that to herself. If she said it aloud, her boss would probably slap her into next week.
Better to stay alive.
“Stop sucking up. Have you had anything to drink?”
Qiao Sijin narrowed her slightly tipsy eyes at Li Ke.
Being suddenly questioned made Li Ke nervous. She had been tempted earlier, but had managed to hold back.
“No, boss! I’m professionally trained, after all.”
She had seriously resisted the temptation of all that good food and wine.
Who else could’ve done that? That was near-monk level restraint.
“Then let’s go.”
At this moment, Qiao Sijin only wanted to get out of there. She didn’t even know if Fu Qingyun was still around, but for safety’s sake, it was best to leave early.
“Seriously? Boss, you’re leaving so soon?”
Weren’t you just holding up a wine bottle, shouting ‘not going home till we’re drunk’?
But normally, Qiao Sijin wasn’t this out of control — she was usually quite composed. Must be the mental stress recently.
Li Ke could understand.
“I feel like the longer I stay here, the more dangerous it gets.”
“Huh?”
“Boss… you didn’t see any paparazzi, did you?”
That made Li Ke instantly alert. If Qiao Sijin got photographed here, it could spoil the movie’s schedule.
She rushed to the window to look down, scanning for any suspicious figures.
“No… but I think that person is scarier than the paparazzi.”
That sounded even more frightening!
Neon lights flickered outside the window as Li Ke scanned nervously. Was it a ghost or something? No — she was a firm materialist. No scaring herself.
“You’re leaving already? Miss Qiao, won’t you stay a bit longer?”
The magazine editor-in-chief walked over, trying to persuade her to stay.
“No thanks. I need to go home and study my script.”
“See you on set tomorrow.”
Qiao Sijin extended her hand, and the editor-in-chief took it in a gentle handshake.
Stay longer? What, just to walk into the lion’s den again?
She had made that mistake once and wouldn’t make it a second time.
Back then, she gambled that Fu Qingyun wouldn’t care whether she stayed or left — and she was right. Fu Qingyun had opened the cage and let her go.
So now that she had come back, what did she want?
Qiao Sijin knew she had to stay far away from Fu Qingyun. In terms of power or cunning, she was no match for someone raised in a den of wolves.
For her, there was only one option: escape.
Yes, it was cowardly.
But avoidance may be shameful — and still effective, right?
In her nanny van, Qiao Sijin finally had a moment to check her phone, which was badly cracked. Thankfully, it could still power on.
Fu Qingyun had wiped it clean earlier, so the glass shards were mostly gone.
She opened the chat app. Thankfully, the button still worked, and she could unlock it.
As soon as the home screen loaded, she saw a ridiculous number of unread messages — 99+ notifications.
Who the hell was blowing up her phone in the middle of the night?
Annoying!
She looked closely. All from one person.
“Xu You?”
“Don’t tell me she got caught by some A-list celebrity and is sending me SOS messages?”
Qiao Sijin imagined the scene: Xu You being strung up in a mansion by four men in black suits and sunglasses, getting whipped while she sobbed and screamed.
A paparazzo like her? No way she’d get off easy.
This could be life or death.
Qiao Sijin couldn’t ignore it. She had to help, if needed.
Even though her screen was too cracked to read properly, she could still figure out the gist through context.
Turns out, Xu You had bombarded her because she saw Fu Qingyun at the mansion entrance earlier.
“Don’t go in no matter what! Qiao Movie Queen, this is worse than running into your ex post-breakup!”
“If Fu Qingyun sees you looking all proud and smug like this, she’ll definitely beat your ass!”
What the hell was wrong with this girl’s way of speaking?
