Chapter 27: Sister… You Don’t Have to Worry
That was probably the first time Li Ke dragged her suitcase to apply as Qiao Sijin’s assistant. At that time, Qiao Sijin wasn’t exactly a famous actress.
Which, for the freshly recruited Li Ke, was a huge relief — it meant Qiao Sijin didn’t have the kind of diva attitude big stars were known for.
If she made a few rookie mistakes in her first job as an assistant, there’d still be room to fix them.
“She’s the one you’ll be following from now on,” Tao Yi said, lifting her gaze toward Qiao Sijin and letting out an involuntary sigh. The words landed in Li Ke’s ears like a landmine.
No way — even a D-list celeb acts this high and mighty?
Then again, that wasn’t impossible.
A lot of D-listers these days act like they’re A-listers. If Qiao Sijin was one of those, Li Ke could be in for a rough time.
“Got it, Sister Tao. I’ll be careful.”
Tao Yi gave a light smile and flicked the ash from her cigarette. She patted Li Ke’s white T-shirt.
“I’m talking about the person next to Sijin — that’s the one you need to handle with extra care.”
“Sijin herself is pretty easy to deal with.”
What kind of cryptic message was that? Was she speaking Chinese or not?
Following Tao Yi’s gaze, Li Ke saw a woman standing beside Qiao Sijin, casually dressed and relaxed in posture. The two of them were deep in conversation, and Qiao Sijin’s eyes never strayed from the elegant woman beside her.
Not even for a second.
There was a different kind of atmosphere between them — even someone as clueless as Li Ke could sense it. She licked her lips. Was she about to walk into a drama right off the bat?
“That woman looks kind of familiar… Is she a celebrity too?”
But that didn’t make sense. If she was, then all the showbiz trivia Li Ke had crammed these past few days should’ve helped her recognize the woman. No way someone so pretty wouldn’t be famous — if not, then netizens clearly had terrible taste.
“She’s not a celebrity, but she might as well be.”
“You’ve heard of Fu Qingyun, CEO of Nanshan Group, right?”
At that, Li Ke slapped her own forehead. Now that Tao Yi mentioned it, she remembered — her lips trembled.
No wonder that woman had looked so familiar — she was practically a staple on university news channels.
Today, Fu Qingyun was dressed down — a fitted white crop top, black jeans, a light sun jacket, and only minimal makeup. Her long black hair fell loosely down her back, and she held a hot drink in her hand.
She looked exactly like someone in her twenties.
She had none of the imposing aura she usually carried in newspapers or TV interviews. In fact, she seemed to be enjoying the moment — smiling, chatting with the person in front of her.
A breeze blew gently past them, and they stood close — very close.
“Uh… my current boss isn’t Fu Qingyun’s long-lost sister or something, is she?”
Please, please, let this be sisterly affection, right? Just some warm sisterhood!
Li Ke started praying in her heart — but out of nowhere, Qiao Sijin suddenly tiptoed and kissed Fu Qingyun’s cheek.
She tried to hide the gesture behind her script, but Li Ke and Tao Yi had been watching from the start. They didn’t miss a thing.
There was a faint red lipstick mark left behind.
Li Ke gripped her suitcase tightly, screaming internally — Ahhhhhh! This is still sisterly affection, right? Definitely just sisterhood! Just some wholesome PDA between sisters in public!
“That’s what I was trying to tell you,” Tao Yi said as she turned and gave Li Ke a glance.
She smiled faintly — but there was too much weight behind that smile. It made Li Ke’s hair stand on end.
“You know why I picked you?”
“Because you’re clean — no baggage, no scandals. Which means you won’t be leaking any of this, right?”
Okay, got it. That was her warning shot.
Li Ke nodded. Message received loud and clear. Who in their right mind would cross someone like the CEO of Nanshan Group?
“As for the relationship between Sijin and President Fu, I trust you can figure out how to handle it on your own. What you shouldn’t ask, don’t ask. What you shouldn’t hear, don’t listen. And don’t go poking around.”
Frightened, Li Ke immediately struck a soldier’s pose, palm over her temple like she was swearing allegiance.
“Understood! Mission accepted. I absolutely won’t betray my two bosses!”
Tao Yi chuckled at the sight.
“Let’s go. I’ll take you over for introductions.”
Li Ke, still very much in her timid phase, trailed behind Tao Yi step by step.
“President Fu.”
Hearing the voice, Fu Qingyun lifted her lashes. Recognizing Tao Yi as Qiao Sijin’s manager, she assumed this was work-related and stepped back slightly.
“Sister Tao… what brings you here?”
Qiao Sijin knew she’d overstepped earlier, but since Fu Qingyun hadn’t scolded her, she felt a bit bolder.
She hid the script behind her back, though she was still nervous. She knew she shouldn’t have done something like that in public.
But… she just couldn’t help herself. Back then, she really, really liked Fu Qingyun.
“I came to introduce your new assistant.”
“She’s just started today — go easy on her.”
Li Ke extended her hand with a polite smile, greeting both Qiao Sijin and Fu Qingyun, carefully keeping her attitude neutral and respectful.
“Hello. May I ask how I should address you?”
True to Tao Yi’s word, Qiao Sijin wasn’t difficult to get along with. She even extended her own hand in return, offering a warm smile.
“Oh… my surname’s Qiao, given name Sijin. Just call me Sijin.”
“No need to be so formal.”
Jobs were hard to come by these days — no way she was letting this one slip.
“You don’t need to be so stiff either.”
“Want a milk tea?”
Qiao Sijin handed over a cup of milk tea she’d bought earlier but hadn’t had a chance to drink while chatting with Fu Qingyun.
Li Ke was flattered, but she accepted it. It seemed like a promising start.
“Thank you, Boss, for your generosity.”
Meanwhile, Fu Qingyun stood with arms crossed, silently watching the scene.
“Sijin, if anything doesn’t feel right, just let me know.”
The words were bold — almost blunt. Li Ke froze. She wasn’t stupid — she understood perfectly what Fu Qingyun was implying.
“I know. But one assistant is more than enough. Sister… you don’t need to worry.”
As soon as Fu Qingyun spoke, the whole atmosphere shifted — it was like winter had arrived.
But Qiao Sijin responded without hesitation. She called her “Sister” — softly, sweetly, tenderly.
