Chapter 35: Stop Making a Scene, Sijin
But after only taking a few steps—
Li Ke noticed something odd. Normally, her coworkers would greet her immediately. But now, they were standing at a distance, stealing glances at her, eyes shifting nervously.
What was that supposed to mean? Was there a ghost behind her or something?
That terrifying?
Frowning, Li Ke thought maybe it was a company executive parking behind her and she had unwittingly blocked their way.
She glanced behind her instinctively, mentally prepared—but still jumped in fright and almost dropped all the documents she was holding.
Damn! That’s President Fu!
Sure, Li Ke had seen the company announcement about it, but reading it and being mentally prepared were two completely different things.
Thanks to her professional training, she managed to suppress her shock and nervously tightened her grip on the documents.
Then she turned and gave a respectful bow.
“Hello, President Fu.”
It’s survival, okay? She really hadn’t meant to sell out her boss.
“No need to be so formal. I won’t be coming around here often,” Fu Qingyun said.
Her tone was emotionless, polite but distant. There was a gloomy aura about her that was hard to describe.
She didn’t seem like the same person Li Ke had met in the beginning. Back then, Fu Qingyun was still cold and authoritative, yes, but at least she felt alive.
Now? She seemed like someone wearing a mask all the time—deeply reserved, unreadable, unreachable.
Maybe even Fu Qingyun herself didn’t understand why she couldn’t let go of Qiao Sijin. Their relationship had long ended. No more entanglements. A clean break. Move on.
But was she really here just to remind herself of that?
Li Ke started mentally running through a thousand scenarios of why Fu Qingyun might be talking to her. She even imagined Fu Qingyun pulling out a black card the next second and coldly declaring:
“Here’s the money. I want all her information.”
If that happened… well, she’d have to consider it carefully. At the very least, check the card balance first, right?
“I know Sijin doesn’t want to see me right now,” Fu Qingyun said. “So I’ll have to rely on you to look after her.”
Oh. So President Fu was here to ask her to take care of her boss?
But… that was literally her job! Did that really need to be said?
“President Fu, this is part of my responsibilities. I would’ve done it regardless,” Li Ke said, now feeling like a heroic martyr ready to lay down her life for her boss.
Was there anyone more dedicated than her? No way. Impossible.
“If there’s anything you need—talk to me. Including matters with Tao Yi.”
Wait, weren’t they supposed to be over?
By now, shouldn’t President Fu be moving on to a new love interest?
…
Under the dim streetlamp.
A somewhat tipsy Qiao Sijin was brought back to the company by Xu You and Qiu Zhirou, because she had rushed out earlier and left some of her personal items in the company’s break room.
She had taken a taxi back alone to grab them, not wanting to trouble Li Ke, who had been given the night off.
“…Hmm? Isn’t that Li Ke?”
She rubbed her eyes and confirmed it. Yep, that was definitely Li Ke.
Didn’t she give her the night off? What was she doing sneaking back to the office? Since when did assistants have to overwork themselves?
Wait a second.
Qiao Sijin narrowed her eyes and focused on the figure standing opposite Li Ke. That back… looked really familiar.
She definitely knew that person. No—absolutely knew them.
“Li Ke!”
She bent down slightly and shouted. Loud enough to shake heaven and earth and send chills through the living and dead alike. Li Ke flinched like she’d been shot.
“Boss…? Why are you here…”
This is it. I’m done. Li Ke frantically waved her hand.
“President Fu, you have to go now. If Boss sees you here with me, I can’t guarantee she won’t tear you in half!”
“Oh no—Boss is going to think I’m a traitor. I swear I’m not!”
Was she that kind of person? Absolutely not.
Li Ke tried to push Fu Qingyun behind the car, but the movement was so obvious that it couldn’t possibly escape Qiao Sijin’s sharp eyes.
Drunk or not, she wasn’t blind.
With angry strides, she stormed over.
“Li Ke! Who are you hiding?! You dare hide someone from me?”
What, did she think Qiao Sijin wouldn’t notice?
As Qiao Sijin tried to peer around the car, Li Ke reached out to block her path.
She really was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Right now, the boss was merely mad. But if she saw President Fu? All hell would break loose.
“No one! It’s just a coworker of mine!”
Yeah, right. Total lie. But for survival, Li Ke would say anything.
“Really?”
Hmm, maybe she was right. The person she thought looked familiar might just be another employee.
Qiao Sijin patted her own head. Maybe it was the alcohol clouding her mind.
Then she spotted the documents in Li Ke’s hands. That didn’t look like her script…
“What’s that in your hands?”
No way she could let her boss see that. Li Ke, like a guilty thief, clutched the papers to her chest. But the overly suspicious move only deepened Qiao Sijin’s doubt.
Raising an eyebrow, she reached out to snatch them.
Li Ke closed her eyes like a martyr facing execution. If Boss saw this, she’d definitely have a huge fight with Tao Yi.
But what else could she do? Qiao Sijin’s current mental state was truly concerning.
The night wind blew through her long black hair, strands fluttering over her shoulders.
Just as she was about to grab the documents, a long slender hand reached out—
And firmly grabbed her wrist.
The grip was tight. So tight it felt like they never wanted to let go.
Qiao Sijin froze.
In that moment, even the air seemed to still. Words failed. Emotions tangled.
That face, hidden in shadow, gradually emerged under the light.
Fu Qingyun took a step forward, her features illuminated by the streetlamp.
Her eyes filled with worry.
“Stop making a scene, Sijin.”
