- Chapter 18 - The Gao family's internal conflict began with the pressure to give birth to a daughter-in-law
The weather was sunny that day, the light just right.
Bai Zixin followed Gao Muting into the Gao family residence, her first time officially meeting the parents as the “Gao family’s daughter-in-law.”
This was the legendary A+ level noble house, covering thirty thousand square meters, with a courtyard big enough to drill soldiers. Even the stone lions at the gate had golden teeth, and the servants opening the door wore uniforms and ties.
But today, the entire Gao family was on standby.
Father Gao and Mother Gao had been waiting at the entrance since morning, like they were welcoming a national treasure. When Bai Zixin stepped out of the car, dressed in an elegant long dress and carrying more than a dozen expensive gift boxes, their eyes nearly sparkled with golden light.
“Oh my, oh my! So this is our daughter-in-law! You’re ten times prettier than the photos!” Mother Gao was as excited as if she had won the lottery.
Father Gao’s face was full of joy as well: “For our Muting to marry such a beautiful and capable girl, this is truly the blessing of our ancestors!”
Bai Zixin smiled sweetly, her voice soft and polite, the tear mole at the corner of her eye sparkling like a jewel. “Dad, Mom, these are little gifts for you. Just a small token~”
Mother Gao almost burst into tears as she took them. “This is just a small token? One bag from you is worth one of our houses!” She quickly took Bai Zixin’s hand and pulled her inside. “Come, come, don’t let the sun tan you! Our daughter-in-law has to stay fair and tender~”
Father Gao couldn’t close his mouth from smiling. While helping carry the gifts, he leaned toward Gao Muting and whispered, his tone as serious as an army order:
“Listen to me, a wife like this only comes once in three generations. If that Ye boy ends up holding a grandchild before us… I—I won’t acknowledge you as my son!”
“…Dad, calm down,” Gao Muting muttered.
His ears turned red as he lowered his voice. “Don’t listen to my dad’s nonsense.”
Bai Zixin blinked her eyes and couldn’t hide her grin. “But your mom also said… our ancestors must be smiling in heaven~”
Gao Muting’s face darkened as she teased him. “Yours are smoking too, I’m sure.”
At lunch, Mother Gao practically turned into a feeding machine. From braised fish to beauty-nourishing bird’s nest soup, she kept sending dishes to the table. “Eat more of this! That one gives energy! This one is good for your skin! Look at your little hands, soft like tofu—our future baby’s skin will definightly take after you!”
The corner of Bai Zixin’s mouth twitched. She ate while smiling awkwardly. “I—I’m really already so full…”
Father Gao leaned closer to Mother Gao and whispered, “If she eats this, will it make her… more fertile?”
Mother Gao instantly signaled the maid to bring out a pot of chicken soup simmered with red dates and longan for three hours. “Drink more of this, drink more! We’re not rushing you to have a child, but… starting a little earlier wouldn’t be bad!”
Bai Zixin coughed hard. “I just got married!”
Mother Gao immediately added, “That Ye boy already installed a baby monitor at home. We can’t fall behind!”
Bai Zixin almost choked on the soup. What? Why didn’t she know about this!?
Throughout the meal, Gao Muting sat silently, his face unreadable. His chopsticks barely moved, but his eyes kept drifting toward her, checking whether she was upset.
Later, as they walked in the back garden after lunch, he finally spoke in a deep voice. “You don’t have to come again.”
Bai Zixin froze, looking up. “Huh? You don’t want me to come to your house?”
“No.” His voice was low. “I’m afraid if my mom keeps talking, I’ll actually do it.”
She paused, then her face turned red. “Y-you don’t say things like that!”
A faint smile touched his lips, rare for him, and his tone carried a trace of teasing. “Who told you to serve me a chicken drumstick today?”
Bai Zixin stammered, “That—that was just manners! Not—not to raise your fertility!”
Holding back laughter, Gao Muting leaned close to her ear, his voice low. “Then how should I return the favor next time?”
Bai Zixin panicked. “I-I-I-I refuse any fertility-related returns from you!!”
That night, when they returned home, Bai Zixin flopped onto the bed, sprawled across the pillows like a lazy sea cucumber.
She stared at the ceiling and cried out in her heart:
[I came to Planet X to save the world! How did it turn into saving three families’ birth rates!? And it even comes with a romance palace-fight expansion pack!!]
Just then, the bathroom door opened. Ye Yibai walked out in loose home clothes, towel drying his hair. He looked at her little bun-like frown.
“What are you worrying about?” His voice was soft.
“I feel like… I’ve become the protagonist of some multi-route romance simulation game.” She buried her head in her hands. “And now there’s DLC too—it’s called ‘Mothers-in-law’s Baby-Pushing Diary’!”
Ye Yibai chuckled, sitting by the bed. He gently brushed her hair away from her forehead. “If you feel pressured, I can help you share it.”
She looked doubtful. “How would you share it?”
He leaned close to her ear, his breath brushing her neck, his voice low and teasing:
“Why don’t we try it tonight too? That way, the Ye family’s progress won’t lose to the Gao family’s—”
“Go to hell!!!” Bai Zixin screamed.
Meanwhile, late at night at the Gao residence.
Mother Gao secretly called Mother Ye. “Our child is quite proactive~ but your son-in-law isn’t backing down either. Let’s wait and see which of us holds a grandchild first!”
Mother Ye’s voice came sharp and competitive. “When the time comes, I’ll book the whole maternity center, don’t blame me for not being polite~”
The two mothers laughed together on the phone, already sounding like they were discussing who should be the baby’s godmother.
Meanwhile, poor Bai Zixin tossed and turned in bed, clutching her head.
[I want to go back to the emergency room! At least the patients there won’t ask me when I’m having kids!!]
